cadetnico:
Nico was seated only a table away from the fair-headed cadet, and so he heard perfectly what he had said. Curious about the context of his words, he observed him from the corner of his eye. His gaze landed on the piece of paper in front of him â he recognized the script and the material of the paper easily, even from where he was. Heâd been given the assignment, as well. They were in the same class. âI, uh, isnât that a bit⊠drastic?â Rarely did the boy speak his mind, and he didnât know what compelled him to do it. Maybe it was because he knew the kind of thinking the other man held and it scared him â it was the kind of thinking that belonged to powerful people who start wars. Or maybe he was just having a strange day.
Marshall turned one blue eye and one brown from the assignment to the other cadet, quirking an eyebrow, âThatâs what you think is drastic? You tell me, kid. Is killing one person so you can do a job meant to stop a war that would kill a shit ton more drastic?â After a moment, he placed the paper aside, folding his arms over his chest, âYou tell me, then. What would you do? You can ask âem to keep quiet, I guess, but thereâs no guarantee theyâre gonna do it, and what would you say? âI realize Iâm a foreign spy probably doinâ somethinâ your government wouldnât like very much, but Iâd greatly appreciate it if you would keep that to yourself.â Denyinâ it might work, but thatâs a crapshoot. If it doesnât work, you could be killed, tortured. Tie âem up and leave âem somewhere? Well, thatâll definitely piss âem off enough to give you up. Itâs always sad when you gotta kill someone, but Iâd rather be sad than room temperature.â

while aurora was fond of violence and chaos, she would never go that far to make a civilian quiet. â donât you think itâs a bit absurd and irrational to kill a person over such a thingâ not to mention barbaric. â though it would be a lie if aurora denied that she hadnât thought of that solution as the last resort.
Marshall laughed abruptly, âAll these bleedinâ hearts around here and Iâm the one in Charlie. No, it ainât extreme. Extreme would be not beinâ able to do what Iâm there to do, yâknow, like save the world, âcause some asshole talked and my coverâs blown. Killinâ âem is the only option if you ask me.â

Tatianaâs expression remained blank. âNot what I meant. But you canât kill every civilian who makes things difficult for you. At some point the evidence will start pilling up against you or against those you work for. They can lie, but they canât convince everyone or make people like them and when the state keeps wronging people, people will revolt. I donât mind it if thereâs no other way, but killing civilians should be your last option. At least I think thatâs the correct answer, I canât really stop you if thatâs how you plan to act when youâre out of here.â
âThatâs why you donât leave evidence. Also, whole point of beinâ a spy is that no one knows who youâre workinâ for. Subterfuge is kinda in the job description. You know what ainât subterfuge? Lettinâ some civilian run their mouth about what youâre up to. Only one way I can think of to guarantee silence unless you got any better ideas. You think Iâm gonna kill âem and leave my contact information? Maybe a Maillard brochure?â
cadetbarysheva:
A table over from the one the young man had claimed for himself, Tatiana raised her eyes from her own paper to give her fellow Charlie a blank look. She recognised the question from the assignement and his face (she was pretty sure his name was Marshall) but his sarcasm -if that was sarcasm- flew right over her head.âI donât think thatâs the correct answerâ, she offered. âWhat do you do with the body then? Or the family?â
âWhy would I do anything? You want me to stop mid-mission and dig a grave? Send flowers and a card to the family, âsorry I killed your husband/father/son/butlerâ? Kill someone the right way and they ainât gonna catch you. Leave âem and carry on.â Clearly, he was not being sarcastic, âYâknow, youâre gonna have some trouble with this if youâre really that sentimental.â
Contrary to what his platoon implied, Marshall was not the type to slack on his work--in fact, he might have made a good Alpha if not for his attitude. It was his amazing ability to get into trouble that ultimately landed him in Charlie.  He was seated in the cafeteria, oblivious to the idle chatter as he inspected the sheet in front of him--presumably some type of assignment. The question was simple--what would you do if you were discovered by a civilian? While heâd been mulling over what the correct answer might be, he already knew what he would do, âIâd kill âem. Loose ends make my ass itch.â
