But then again, not having to think about those things was a privilege on its own. “I bet that wasn’t easy.” He admitted, no animosity in his voice. “Right, I forgot about the new child. How’s that going?” Because of Daniel’s particular situation with his own kids, he had never gone through the stress of pregnancy with a partner, but he could only guess that it was… stressful. He could bet than the two of them went through a lot together, another thing Daniel couldn’t relate to. Being married, having a partner for so long… he had meaningful relationships, but they never lasted more than two or three years. “Wondering about what? If you don’t mind the intrusion of a random unhealthy semi-stranger, of course.” 

"  Did  I  make  you  uncomfortable  ?  ”  He  turned  his  attention  to  Daniel,  eyebrow  raised,  “  I  didn’t  mean  to  play  the  gay  card  on  you.  ”  His  mind  really  was  just  elsewhere.  replying  the  fifty  possibilities  of  the  same  conversation  he  would  have  to  have  with  his  husband  again  and  again,  with  a  different  more  tragic  ending  every  time.  —  Cadu  took  another  drag  of  his  own  cigarette  before  shrugging  a  little,  “  It...  ”  He  could  lie  but  then  again,  there  was  no  reason  to.  “  It’s,  I  don’t  know,  I  don’t  know  think  I  have  ever  been  this  stressed  about  something  I  have  no  control  over.  ”  Cadu  knew  already  that  he  would  love  that  child,  whoever  they  were,  whatever  they  decided  to  do  with  their  life,  but  the  weight  of  that  responsibility  was  so  much  more  than  what  he  wanted  to  carry  at  that  point.  “  Who  knows,  Dan,  I  might  be  single  soon.  ”

he’d  been  so  lost  in  thought  that  it  was  only  once  the  kid  was  pointing  out  the  pros  and  cons  of  each  color  that  he  managed  to  look  up.  blinking  in  the  way  that  disappeared  with  confusion  and  forced  him  back  into  the  real  world,  cadu  nodded  along,  doing  his  best  to  pretend  he  was  present  for  every  moment  of  that  interaction.  —  “  why  not  all  three  ?  ”  that  was  how  cadu  went  about  mostly  everything.  better  to  err  on  the  side  of  excess  than  to  end  up  missing  what  you  could  have  bought.  “  you  can  keep  changing  them  back  and  forth  as  you  see  fit  for  the  seasons.  ”

she wrinkled her nose, leaning in to read the synopsis in question, “justin… brogan? what kind of surname is brogan? that is horrific. almost as horrific as that premise. i do have to wonder if i went into the wrong profession. writing shitty erotica seems like a cakewalk, though admittedly a very shameful one.” she grimaced for a moment before dissolving into laughter too, shaking her head animatedly. “quite psychotic. dream man right there. put him next to the guy from those smut blockbusters from a couple of years back.” 

“might have to cave and pay for netflix at this rate. i don’t remember the last time i willingly watched cable and i’m not sure i wish to start over.” her mouth twisted then, “love island? dare i ask what that’s about?”

in  that  small  library  he  didn’t  quite  expect  to  come  into,  with  a  woman  he  had  just  met,  talking  about  books  neither  of  them  had  even  read,  cadu  was  having  fun.  the  impossibility  of  it  did  not  escape  him.  “  that’s  his  tinder  profile  profile  right  there.  justin  brogan,  twenty-three,  quite  psychotic.  ”  returning  the  book  back  to  its  previous  assigned  place  at  the  shelf,  cadu  continued,  “  hey,  it  could  be  an  avengers  assemble  type  of  deal  except  it’s  just  men  you  shouldn’t  date,  the  movie.  ” 

"  cable  is  a  slippery  slop,  you  start  watching  property  brothers  and  then  it’s  three  hours  later  and  you  are  on  a  documentary  about  the  aliens  that  visit  earth  and  gave  humans  their  true  souls.  ”  and  then  it’s  three  am  and  he’s  questioning  either  or  not  he  should  go  to  sleep  in  the  first  place  when  he’ll  have  to  wake  up  in  just  a  few  hours.  “  a  surplus  of  option  is  bad  for  us,  that’s  i  think.  ”

a  shake  of  the  head  was  his  answer  to  her  question.  “  love  island  is...  it’s  horrible.  i  can’t  stop  watching  it.  the  premise  couldn’t  be  any  more  simple.  beautiful  people  in  island.  they  have  to  couple  up  with  someone  or  they  get  kicked  out  and  still  i’m  always  sitting  there  at  the  edge  of  my  seat.  ”

rosamund supposed there were many worse occupations to explain away to one’s parents, some parents didn’t read avidly. but it amused her nonetheless. the thought that in an alternate universe, her mother was far more horrified at her occupation than her lack of a ring, or three children.

“enjoy tolkien all you please, i get so confused with all the characters.” she waved a hand good-naturedly, “as for netflix? that’s not a terrible idea. i’ve never been a huge television watcher, but i guess now is as good a time as any.”

“  oh,  yeah,  definitely.  the  only  thing  separating  —  ”  his  eyes  studied  the  shelf  in  front  of  them,  looking  for  a  name.  “  carmen  emilia  from  the  success  she  deserves  is  her  death.  probably  has  nothing  to  do  with  her  use  of  the  world  moist  and  shaft  too  much.  ”  he  had  to  laugh.  same  names  were  better  left  in  obscurity. 

“  oh,  no,  look,  ”  he  flipped  the  book  back  around,  to  show  her  the  back  of  it.  on  that  side,  bright  green  ink  on  a  black  background  explained  the  story  of  the  book.  “  i  think  this  is  erotica.  she  meets  hot  and  devilishly  handsome  justin  brogan.  dangerous,  arrogant  and  quite  psychotic,  justin  hacks  into  kyla's  computer  and  soon  he  controls  everything,  including  her  heart  and  her  life.  ”  another  louder  laugh  escaped  his  lips  and  this  time  around  it  lacked  the  weight  and  worry  that  had  laced  his  every  second  beforehand.  right  then  and  there  it  was  a  lot  more  honest. 

"  i  have  heard  we  are  in  the  golden  age  of  television.  ”  not  that  he  cared  much  for  it  himself.  “  hey,  i  mean,  not  to  expose  myself  here,  but  love  island  ?  pretty  entertaining  as  far  as  trash  television  goes.  ”

“Do you really want to do that? When you’re dressed in sportswear?” Daniel replied, eyebrows raised, after Cadu’s comment on his clothes. What was wrong with how he was dressed, anyway? It was a suit and a tie, you couldn’t go wrong with that.  “You know, Cadu. Being single doesn’t mean being alone.” What would he know, anyway? For what Daniel heard, he had been with the same man since his teenage years. Maybe that was better; not having to worry about the ‘ do they love me or do they love me not ’ drama. “Well, if you’re trying to get off your head, I must say that you have a much healthier approach than most people.” Drinking and doing drugs seemed way easier to not prefer it over exercise. Thoughtful pause, Daniel took another drag of his cigarette. “Trouble in paradise?” 

He  nodded  his  head  waving  his  fingers  in  the  air.  “  You  got  a  point.  ”  Unfortunately,  common  sense  dictated  Cadu  couldn’t  wear  Ermenegildo  Zegna  to  go  out  on  a  run,  which  was  shame,  really,  he  would  have  looked  great  doing  so.  “  Yeah  ?  Are  you  sure  ?  Because  from  what  I  remember  being  single  meant  getting  thrown  inside  lockers  for  liking  boys  and  The  Lord  of  the  Rings.  ”  Not  a  lot  had  changed  after  Ben  came  into  his  life,  it  mostly  just  made  it  easier  to  deal  with  the  things  that  were  happening.  “  Yeah,  well,  I  got  a  child  on  the  way.  I  could  be  knitting  them  sweaters,  but  I  feel  like  running  will  give  me  a  better  chance  to  see  them  getting  married.  ”  He  half-shrugged.  “  It’s  not  trouble,  I’m  just  wondering,  I  guess.  ”  Drowning  on  the  certainty  that  sooner  or  later  that  would  be  his  fate.  “  Been  with  Ben  for  a  while.  ”
