“Hey—it’s just me.”

Leon’s voice cut clean through the dim hallway, calm and steady, hands raised just enough to show he wasn’t a threat. His eyes locked onto yours immediately.

You didn’t lower your gun.

Your chest rose and fell in uneven breaths, your finger still tight on the trigger. He’d shown up late—typical—and had just saved you from becoming zombie chow.

Same old Leon.

Same side-swept hair, although a bit longer now. Cleaner stubble lining his jaw. And there, strung on a necklace around his neck, was the very same grenade pin you had proposed with years ago.

“Well, ain’t that one hell of a greeting,” you panted, a ghost of a smile tugging at your battle-worn face. “Been a while, Kennedy.”

Leon let out a quiet breath—something just shy of a laugh.

“You look like hell,” he said, voice low, teasing threaded through it.

Three years. That’s how long it had been since you’d seen that dastardly handsome face of his.

Seeing you again… was doing something to him. You could tell, even with that same composed expression he always wore.

“I wonder why, hm?” You raised an eyebrow before lifting your arm and firing. Three clean shots—one infected dropped before it got close. “Why so late, old man?”

Leon’s mouth twitched into a smirk as he watched the body hit the ground.

“Old man?” he echoed, crossing his arms. “We’re almost the same age, smartass.”

“Psh. Only for a few months.” You rolled your eyes. “How are you?”

He huffed out a quiet chuckle. “Tired. Sore. In need of a vacation. Same old story.”

His gaze lingered on you a second longer than necessary—taking you in, like he was making up for lost time.

You were noticeably winded, all thanks to dealing with Umbrella security and handfuls of infected.

You were wearing a black leather jacket—a fashion choice influenced by him—and strapped to your leg was an extra holster with a gun still in it. On the other side was a strap for your knife.

“Don’t we all,” you muttered, reloading. “Think the DSO’s letting us off after this?”

Leon shrugged, his own leather jacket shifting with the movement.

You accidentally matched today. What a joy.

“They owe us one,” he said, a glimmer of a smirk on his lips. “And if not, I’m filing for leave anyway.”

“And I hope you’re not planning on spending that vacation away from me,” he added.

“I don’t know,” you smirked. “Depends on your plans.”

He stepped closer.

Close enough that his voice dropped.

“Starts with a beach,” he murmured, his thumb brushing dust from your cheek. “Ends with you stealing my shirt.”

“Sounds promising.” Your lips quirked. “I’ll think about it.”

Leon’s eyes narrowed slightly, amused and unconvinced.

“You’re still stubborn,” he muttered. “Gonna make me work for it?”

“Most definitely.” Your grin sharpened. “Survive first, Kennedy, then we’ll see.”

His answering smile came easy.

“Deal.”

The next wave hit fast.

You pivoted, kicking one infected back before firing into another. Leon moved with you—fluid, practiced, and powerful—watching your blind spots like it was second nature.

“Don’t forget,” he called over the noise, “you still owe me a shirt.”

“That was one time!” you shouted, taking down a personnel with a kick.

Leon scoffed. “You never gave any of them back.”

You reached down to snap your opponent’s neck. “Because they look better on me.”

“That’s not the point,” he grunted, stabbing another that tried to get close.

You shot another clean through the skull before glancing back at him.

“Your shirts are better than mine,” you admitted between breaths.

Leon shook his head, but there was something softer and more amused in his expression now.

“You just like that they smell like me.”

“Oh no,” you deadpanned. “I’ve been found out.”

You moved through the room, scanning—files, terminals, anything useful. This place reeked of Umbrella remnants. Bioweapon research. And if intel was right—data on a modified T-virus strain.

Bingo.

You grabbed a loose document, scanning quickly.

“You’re always stealing my shirts,” he sighed, helping you with the loose papers around you. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you managed to make a Leon-scented comfort blanket.”

“Don’t give me ideas,” you muttered absently. “Unless you want your whole closet wiped out.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Oh, but I would.”

You slipped the important document into your jacket for safekeeping.

“Found something. Looks like the data core’s stored below.”

Leon sighed. “Of course it’s the basement.”

“Where else would a shady lab be?” You smirked before starting to move, then tossed over your shoulder, “Let’s go, handsome.”

Leon followed close, his hand briefly brushing your hip as he passed.

“Lead the way, smartass.”

It took everything to get out alive.

Countless close calls. Too many infected. The data nearly lost twice.

But somehow—you made it.

A little roughed up. Filthy. Legs aching. Ears ringing. And did I mention filthy?

The cargo helicopter hummed steadily as it carried you all out.

You sank into your seat, exhaustion hitting all at once. Muscles screaming, lungs still trying to catch up.

Leon sat beside you, his hand resting comfortably on your thigh before he tapped it lightly, silently asking if you were alright.

You glanced at him, your eyes already halfway to closing.

“I’m good,” you murmured. “You?”

Leon nodded in response to your assurance, his gaze roaming over you, noting the fatigue written all over your face. He could tell you were pushing yourself to the limit, but that seemed to be a habit of yours.

“Never felt better.” His hand didn’t move—just a light squeeze. “You’re gonna have to stop playing reckless one of these days.”

You scoffed. “Back at you, partner.”

“Fair.”

Silence again—comfortable this time.

You shifted, resting your head against his shoulder.

Leon didn’t hesitate. His arm came around your waist like it had always belonged there.

“Hey,” you murmured after a moment. “About that vacation.”

Leon’s lips curved.

“Vacation?” he echoed. “Mind refreshing my memory?”

You snorted, slapping his chest. “Play dumb and you’re not getting it.”

“You started it.” He leaned in slightly, voice low. “Name the time and place… fiancé.”

That word hit harder than expected.

“I—well… dang.” Your face flushed. “When I proposed under duress that one time, I didn’t know I was signing up for such a pain in the ass.”

Leon huffed out a quiet laugh, smug satisfaction clear in his ocean-blue eyes.

“You signed up for the Leon Kennedy experience,” he said. “No refunds.”

“Unfortunately.” You sighed, settling closer.

After a stretch of comfortable silence, you muttered, “I’m filing for leave when we get back. Think a month’s enough?”

His grip tightened just slightly. “…Should be.”

You tilted your head, glancing up at him. “Think it’s enough to get a marriage certificate?”

That got him.

Leon went still.

Then he turned—really looked at you this time.

“…You weren’t joking?” His voice dropped, rougher now.

Leon reached up, his thumb grazing your jaw. “We’ve been engaged for five damn years.”

A quiet breath, as if he were taking in the gravity of it.

The weight of it settled between you—years of near-misses, deployments, almosts, and not yets packed into something that had started as a joke.

A joke he never really let go of.

His gaze searched yours, like he was trying to figure out if this was real—or if you’d pull back like you always did.

“…Yeah,” Leon exhaled, something soft breaking through the edges of his usual composure. “Let’s make it real.”

“Sorry for the wait.” A crooked, shit-eating grin still made its way onto your face—because of course it did. “After we get this sorted out, let’s head to the local courthouse. I might even wear a white dress for once.”

Leon let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t looking forward to seeing you all dressed up in white.

“Five years,” he muttered. “Only you would turn a combat zone into a proposal… and make me take it seriously.”

His fingers slid into your hair, tucking a loose strand behind your ear—lingering just a second longer than necessary.

“A white dress, huh?” His voice dipped, softer now—soft enough to make you do a double take.

“Try not to ruin it.” You narrowed your eyes—a silent warning. “Don’t you dare even think about it, Kennedy. It’s Dior.”

He smirked. “Guess I’ll just have to be careful…Mrs. Kennedy.”

Hi, Hello GB and all the Dev team. I have a question that relates to development as a whole. For buddying aspiring VN devs, what advice could you or any of the team have to share for some that is struggling to complete a project.

It's cool you're wanting to make VNs! My main piece of advice is always to try finishing something small that's not crowdfunded before trying to make a more ambitious project. For assets, I recommend looking for royalty free sources on Itch.io or seeing if you can join a team during a game jam and work with people who are also making a project for free and for fun. If you're going to do everything yourself than I'd double the suggestion to attempt something super small.

Learning how to make a VN from start to finish is a big task already. Making it harder by trying to make a VN you have really specific aspirations for or something that's ambitious will add extra complications.

Plus, it's hard to get players and it gets harder every year. Even if you do spend years on your first game and finish it, if you have no prior history of releases and no experience marketing a game you'll struggle to get people to give your hard work a chance. That could be very disheartening. If almost no one plays a game that took a few months, it's easier to take the experience you gained and try again.

One last suggestion is to design a story/game from the ground up that's made for you to be able to finish it. Keeping it small is one thing, but leaning towards your strengths instead of weaknesses is another. If you struggle with prose, write something that only has dialog. If you're worried about the editing, maybe have the game set in a chat room where nobody is using proper grammar. If you feel awkward writing romance, make the story about friendship or enemies or something else instead. And so on. As long as you don't get put off of making games entirely, you can always try to challenge yourself later.

So, if you have a project that you can't finish, try to pinpoint why and see if you can change things to avoid those issues or possibly put the initial idea aside for something more doable.
