after caine's "Death" (IDC what anyone says, fictional characters will NEVER DIE!!!!) I realized how much I actually loved him... SO MUCH SO I GOT A PLUSH!!
kinda a situation where "you don't know how good you have it until it's gone"..
despite this though, I still LOVE Caine!
I've always had my eyes on him since the pilot anyways..
I have a weird pattern of shipping myself with fictional AI who want to trap me in their world for all of eternity.. hehe..

First chapter! "Artist Block"
In this digital circus, every avatar had some sort of gimmick, and yours was no different. Unlike the others, you seemed to actually need rest. If the digital sun were out, you couldn’t keep your eyes open, and you’d tend to curl up into a ball on the floor for a catnap.
In this digital circus, every avatar had a gimmick to it, and yours was no different. Unlike the others, napping was crucial. While they could stay up for days with no issue, if you did, you might as well be on the “stupid sauce”. If the virtual sun were out, you couldn’t keep your eyes open, and you’d curl up into a ball on the floor for a catnap.
This meant you didn’t actually have conversations with anyone but NPCs, but you were never a people person to begin with.
Tonight started no differently than any other night. You got off your hanging cloud-shaped bed and made your way out of your room.
Silently yawning as you walked through the hall, glancing at everyone’s door, passing each to see if anyone new had arrived while you dreamt. You, remaining the most recent arrival, found solace. The mind wasn’t meant to be subjected to a place like this.
Walking through the dark circus, you found it peaceful. It’s not like your life before was chaotic or anything, but you enjoyed the lack of responsibility that this entrapment brought.
Every night, there you were, wandering back to the same scene: the lake. The digital reflection of the stars illuminated the area, so to you it was the perfect spot to spend the time you had.
Scaling the boulders, you found a pleasant spot to gaze and relax some more. They twinkled so gently. You’d wonder if anyone else had ever noticed all the minor details created to make this place feel more alive.
As you were lost in your thoughts, you felt a presence that was approaching rather slowly. It made you stop and look around. Nobody. That’s when you took a glance up and…
It was Caine slowly floating to your side from above. He seemed to be upset about something. It was pretty obvious since he already had his arms and legs crossed with an angry sort of expression.
“Heeyyy... Caine,” you greeted despite the subtle awkwardness, “You good?”
“I don’t have any new ideas! Everything I seem to try only upsets you, humans!” He complains while his body follows his every word animatedly. “If they can’t see the genius of my vision, why be creative?”
His mini-rant had you taken aback. For as long as you knew, Caine wasn’t the type to sit down and start a conversation.
Scanning the area, it showed that you were left alone, no bubble in sight, not even an NPC, just the two of you, and your gaze fell back onto him.
“Not sure why you’re asking me about this… It’s been a while since I’ve attended one of your adventures.”
“That’s the problem!” Caine exclaimed while floating in front of you, “There has to be a reason you and everyone else are unhappy with my adventures. There has to be something I’m missing!”
The tone he used didn’t come off as aggressive; it was more akin to genuine confusion about what he was screwing up. It was hard for you not to feel bad for him as he put a lot of effort into everything he constructed.
“Well, I can’t speak for others… but I bet it is the monotonous way you create conflict.”
Caine’s interest was piqued by your sincere criticism, and his poster changed almost instantly to a more open one. You took that as a sign you might get somewhere with this, so you continue.
“Every time you seem to just use the scare factor to make things difficult, it’s no wonder the others find it distasteful. Have you tried something more tame, or rather something easier?” You were trying your best here, even if it seemed to be common sense to you."
Caine put his hands on his hips, and he drifted back to create distance. “Why would I do that? That doesn’t seem fun or rewarding at all!”
Your eyes widened at his lack of open thinking. “Well, uh, sometimes we humans just need an easy win to keep our spirits high! If everything is hard to do, or scary, we’re going to get discouraged…”
Explaining the concept to him seemed to unlock a new way of thinking for him, and it showed in his pondering expression. He even took a seat beside you on the boulder.
Thinking replaced his ranting as his gloved hand was holding his bottom jaw. Not wanting to overload his fabricated brain, you directed your attention back to the stars above and took a big inhale of the night’s air.
It had been a minute of peaceful silence before you remembered the small ringmaster beside you. You turn your attention back to him, but you are startled by his enormous eyes and pupils in your face. Was he staring at you like that for the entire minute?
Rightfully startled, you yelped, falling back and anticipating the hard landing onto the sand. To your surprise, though, Caine caught your wrist before you could fall.
“Careful, my dear! No need to start your early abstraction, HAHA!”
As he guided you back to a steady sit, you stared for a slight moment. The relatively dark joke coming from Caine, out of anyone, resulted in a laugh from yourself you hadn’t heard in forever. It was so genuine, and ever since you arrived here, there hasn’t been much to laugh at.
He hadn’t heard anyone laugh so hard at a joke he had made, so those big pupils returned.
“I didn’t know humans were capable of feeling joy towards my wit, wowie!”
As he floated up above you once again, you couldn’t tell if that was a joke or not, but you still kept your smile. “What do you mean? You’re not that unfunny, Caine.”
Caine huffed like a child who doesn’t get his way, but still kept his energetic tone. “Well, no other human seems to take kindly to my amazing humor.”
“Give them a break… I’m sure it’s not you.” You reassured him before bringing your knees close to your chest. “They just aren’t as receptive to this whole thing.”
He drifted closer to eye level and cocked his head. “Why are you, then?”
“Uh… what?” The question threw you off since it seemed rather personal for him.
“Why are you so well adjusted while the others can’t seem to understand anything I do for them?”
It wasn’t something you had put a lot of thought into, so it made you a bit sheepish. “I kind of… well…” You stumble over your words a few times because of the intense, unblinking gaze you were getting. “It’s just a really nice world, I don’t really know…”
Adjusting your position to be more relaxed, you watched the digital lake instead of Caine. “My life before coming here wasn’t anything to write home about. There was the same baseless routine because of the night shift I worked for years… At least here - if I wanted to - there’s stuff to do.”
Caine’s face literally beamed as his pupils seemed to have stars in them, and once again, he invaded your personal space. “You… actually like it here?!”
“Yes…?” With an uncomfortable smile, you reiterated, "It's better than reality, that's for sure."
“That’s.. that is-!” Caine froze before he could finish being amazed by any sort of enjoyment of his home. He had blue-screened.
It was an unusual sight to see the animated ringmaster completely still for once. “Uh, Caine? Did you die or something? What’s happening?” For what you said, you were rather calm about him suddenly coming to a halt.
There was no way Caine could actually die, surely, at least, that's what you thought in the moment. You decided not to panic and just make sure when he came back, he wasn’t going to fall.
Gently, you guided Caine’s body back down onto the boulder with your pointer finger before gripping his shoulders.
“Caine?” You called, which seemed to snap him out of it.
His eyes glitched before they returned to normal, and a bit of relief swept over you. You really thought you killed him or something similar for a second there.
Once he realized he was back, he looked down at you holding him in place, still not speaking a word. “What just happened, man? Did you like, pass out?”
“I! Uh…” Caine couldn't get out a word.
An awkward silence followed before you realized how close you two had become, and you swiftly put your hands firmly in your lap instead.
“Sorry about that, just, you know, worried about you. You like ‘blue screened’.”
“OH!” he exclaimed as if he had completely lost his memory. “Don’t worry about that, my tentative tangerine, I am perfectly fine!” The strange nicknames he always gave made you smirk as he flew up once more. “I’d best be getting back to my work, can’t have the adventure for tomorrow go unfinished!”
You shrugged with relaxed shoulders, “Whatever you say, Caine.”
“Andddd..” He said, slightly turning back to you, “Thank you for the helpful insight. I’ll make sure your review will not go unnoticed or unused!”
Just like Caine, you were never truly thanked for anything you did, so two small pink transparent ovals appeared on your cheeks, creating a flustered expression from the admiration. “Eh, it’s nothing, thanks for the adventures.”
Before Caine disappeared, you caught a quick glimpse at his face, and it was an expression you’ve never seen before. It was a conflict mixed with longing. He didn’t want to leave, but he forced himself to…
That face reminded you of your childhood dog every time you left for school. You wondered if anyone else in the circus gave him a clear direction to follow rather than just negative remarks. Maybe he wouldn’t look like a lost puppy if someone paid attention to him. In a way, it made you feel guilty for the generated ringmaster.
He then disappeared into himself, and the world was quiet again. Outside of the small fabricated cricket noises, it was just you again.
Letting out a gentle sigh, you reflect for a moment on what even happened between you two that night, but before you could get too far into your thoughts, you looked beside you. A lone slice of angel food cake sat on a plate beside you.
Playfully rolling your eyes at the “thank you gift” Caine left for you, you found it oddly sweet, in both the gesture and bite.
wester x caine = ceaira, that's their CHILD!!!!!!
wester is my character btw and im currently writing them a fic
(ceaira won't be apart of it tho, but she's like.. after the end of it.)
