Week 9 | Self logo | Zeal Design

This week we were challenge to create a logo for ourself. Many of my peers focused on branding themselves with their name. I did brainstorm and play with some ideas revolving around my initials but I wanted to try a more professional and marketable approach. 

For the logo I wanted to capture my style of design. Its touch trying to simplify yourself into a single word or single idea. Working myself down “Zealous” to have “Zeal”, playful design, with the motif of a working pencil/pen, not to literally, to express it in an analogue and digital sense. The last image shows my first idea, after some adjusting with my teacher, we settled on the top style.

The lines are unjoined, showing the ‘untamed’ nature of design. 

There are also some additional alternatives that I think I will expand into the mock ups and potentially favour.

Week 8 | Magazine Cover | The Reckoner

This week we were challenged to create a magazine cover using only typography.

The top image is my final magazine cover, a very retro-esque, game-informer style of magazine. 

You can see below two very unfinished covers. They were very dark serious moody style mags, just some idea state lead up before I figured out what I really wanted. 

I would love to go back and try to push the boundary of the top magazine. Make the type more free form. Many typographic magazine covers consist of hand lettered messy type over an image, typically a portrait or photo of the cover celebrity. I would love to experiment and make something stylistically like that but that was the examples shown to us and I wanted to try something aside from that.

Conditions of the cover:

Header title, two articles, two interviews, issue number, date and price.

I included a barcode as well :)

Here’s our groups flat mag!!!! 

We had this whole social media idea, so we made a gossip trash poster. We were aiming to the younger crowd, the young adults, the things that are ‘relevant’ to our generation these days. For those international, we are Australian so the bachelor text is about our season haha. Bloody Honey Badger. So yeah we went casual, colloquial for the content itself and made it a trash humour. Hope you like it :)

Week 7 | Horror tee design | Eleven is bitchen

I’ve also my lead up and another design I sketched with a wacom tablet. I wanted to go for a very raw sketch style to emphasise the horror on the teletubbies print. 

For Eleven I went for a retro effect, 8-bit text and colour wash to make that grunge vintage effect

Week 5 | The Wandering Eye | Advertisement imagery food for thought campaign 

I originally wanted to try and do a scanimation style image, of an eye looking side to side. I did venture into illustrator and start playing with the idea. Unfortunately after many hours I couldn’t achieve anything that resembled it. I confess i am not good at maths haha and there is a lot conceptual maths involved and i just could not get my brain around it all haha. I plan to try it for the future, but for this week I went with something more classically illustrative.

Week 6 | Book cover for band | Magnolia by Gang of Youths

Some of my early brainstorming for my calendar, the first pic is a rough page of ideas I was considering then I started sketching and making visual concepts of the ideas. Mostly nonsense at first glance but it is a process i take to start mapping out my ideas, in a way that will make sense to me.

Another consideration prior to my complete calendar mock up, was binding.

I ideally wanted to actually bind the calendar with door hinges, but I didn’t know how to achieve it in time for the deadline so I then started to consider my other options.

The top right is the spiral, I wasn’t really excited about it. The bottom left thermal bind and the bottom right hard cover were more professional but they are very book like and make the function of the calendar my challenging. All this in mind I went with a silver wire like the top left, this gave it the 360 rotation function of a calendar and a more professional look and durability

Week 2 | Grids

Week 3 | Number Plate Typography

I first made the yellow and then I went back to refine the plates and make a black white version. I then threw it into a vintage plate mock up, not very Australia more the American style but just thought it would add something nice to the process.
