Japanese Artist Carves Stunning Skull Sculptures and Miniature Jewelry From Pearls

Tokyo-based artist and jeweler Shinji Nakaba creates unconventional and beautiful “wearable sculptures” from pearls by creating anatomical figures, flowers and skulls. His most sough after work include the pearl skulls, which are usually attached to rings, necklaces and brooches. 

Nakaba’s designs have transformed the perception of traditional pearl jewelry, which is often associated with a high brow glamour into a quirky, macabre and contemporary icon.

Combination Dagger with Flintlock Gun

Dated: 19th century

Culture: European

Measurements: overall length 38.5 cm

The dagger has a cusp of triangular section, assembled on a long neck of round section, faceted and octagonal at the base. It is provided with a opening gate holding a rounded, iron ramrod, for loading. On one side it features a flintlock barrel with an external spring and a trigger. The steel quillon is decorated with rings on the arms, buttoned at the ends. The steel grip is functioning as a barrel (6 mm cal.), shaped as a double baluster, featuring roundish knots alternated to rings.

Pistol Dagger

Dated: circa 1850

Culture: British (manufactured for the Orient)

The weapon has round faceted barrels with lugs, gilt engraved and decorated, and marked ‘London’. The swan neck plate and hammer have a flat body, while the gilt copper accessories feature decoration of flowers, foliages and military trophies. The walnut stock and rod have some checkering and are ornated with plated incrustations and silver threading and thumb rest.

Measurements: 44.7 x 7.5 x 3.0 cm (whole object)

Acquirer(s): King Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom (1841-1910)

Provenance: presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Shivaji V Chhatrapati Narayana Rao, Raja of Kolhapur

The dagger has a pointed one edged steel blade with a broad straight back. The hilt is made of white jade and set with rubies, diamonds and emeralds in gold setting of floral design. The purple velvet covered wooden scabbard has a tip of white jade set with rubies, diamonds and emeralds.
