Can a single can of chuu-hi get you drunk? Ari plays Mythbusters

You may remember the portion of Kyoto Saga where cans of juice are mixed up with chuu-hi, getting Suguro kind of tipsy and Rin absolutely blasted. This always bothered me; even if they’re kids who have never drunk before, how can they get so drunk off of one can of any drink? It’s 9 percent alcohol in some cases, sure, but it can’t be that potent. And how did they drink the entire thing without realizing it was booze?

So I ran an experiment.

While in Japan, I purchased a tall can of 9% grapefruit chuu-hi and went to town, to see how it tasted and to see if it’d get me drunk. I’m something of a lightweight, and I’m approximately the same height and weight as Rin (a bit heavier, actually), so I thought it’d be a good estimation.

As far as taste goes, the alcohol is completely undetectable. It just tastes like sparkling grapefruit juice. Usually, I can pick out at least some alcoholic taste, especially with a higher ABV, but the biggest clue is the warm feeling in your throat you get after drinking it.

And regarding potency, I started feeling the effects about halfway through the can, and I was solidly drunk by the time I finished the thing off. I didn’t chug it, either-- I drank it over the course of at least 90 minutes. Rin initially chugs the drink, so I can totally see how he’d get drunk so quickly.
