PROJECT DEATH: DONNIE DARKO
â dear roberta sparrow, i have reached the end of your book and there are so many things that i need to ask you. sometimes i'm afraid of what you might tell me. sometimes i'm afraid that you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. i can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. i hope that when the world comes to an end, i can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to. â
âWell, without previous knowledge, you are unable to perform any kind of experiment. Background information is just as important as following through on the experiment, because otherwise you wouldnât even understand what youâre testing,â Rebecca explained, a bit ramble-y as she normally became when it came to science.Â
âIs that so,â Calebâs response was airy in tone with a roguish smirk causing slightly protruding dimples to match. âI, respectfully, disagree. I mean, yes, background information is of some importance, depending on potential safety hazards and all that fun. But if you were already familiar with the formula, it wouldnât really be experimenting, would it? It would just be... doing.â Irises dropped to examine a loose thread on his shirt that his fingers had been toying with, detaching it with a firm yank, all the while his smirk had softened to an absentminded smile. âI think thereâs no such thing as an experiment without a little risk of the unknown.â
âNo, I donât bother. Dayzie sounds the same whether you spell it like the flower or like me and Iâd really rather not waste my time spelling it out just for them to spell it wrong anyways, because my mother is a genius and thought I needed to be different,â the brunette responded with a roll of her eyes, not seeming to mind that the other wasnât paying much attention. She then raised an eyebrow at his next suggestion, a smile creeping onto her face. âYeah, Iâm sure itâs that one, Mr. Illuminati. Do you also think Tupac and Elvis are still alive? Or the government was involved in 9/11?â She teased, letting out a small chuckle.
âThatâs... an odd way of going about it. From my observation, it seems more likely that people with differently spelled names would pull their hair out, screaming the correct spelling of their name âtil they drop dead. But you just let it slide? Interesting. Have you always been like that?â The tone of his voice was slightly dull, a clear sign that he was still somewhat distracted with his own work. However, a single dark eyebrow quirked slightly at her questions that followed, the amusement interlaced with her words causing the faint hint of a smirk to touch his lips before he released an audible sigh. âElvis, no. Tupac? Yes. Heâs been living in my parentsâ basement under a new alias for years.â Lips twitched slightly, curling and tugging back a bit more to form a more noticeable smirk, and icy blue hues then lifted from the screen of his laptop to focus on the brunette. Chiseled features were suddenly void of humour, though the smirk remained intact as he crossed his arms over his chest. âIn all sincerity, though, the government was involved. The American defence system willfully failed. I mean, planes that lose contact with control towers are usually intercepted by fighter jets within ten minutes, yet those jetliners that struck New York were allowed to proceed without bother for more than half an hour, and the plane that supposedly crashed in Washington wasât intercepted for more than an hour and forty minutes after it was widely known that four planes had been hijacked.â A brief shrug of his broad shoulders, and he continued to say, âand thatâs only one part of the conclusive theory.â
âYes, you did hear me correctly. I didnât go to any party on Friday because I was busy. I read three whole chapters of my inorganic chemistry textbook, and it was an incredibly riveting experience. Why is that so strange?â
âNot going to a party? Not a big deal. I mean, roof-raisinâ parties packed with a bunch of sweaty bodies arenât normally my scene either. However, willingly reading not one but three chapters on some wild science trip? Rivetingly strange. Making fake volcanos explode is pretty great, but anything beyond the hands-on experiments just...â I donât get where the fun is in that.â
So, the guy at Starbucks actually spelled my name right and Iâm not sure whether to be pleased or concerned.
âDid you spell it out for him? Maybe heâs a good listener,â Caleb uttered without much thought, the majority of his attention evidently focused on the screen of his laptop while rough pads of his fingers flitted across the keyboard. âOr perhaps an overly attuned admirer, turned stalker, who you only noticed today. The possibilities are endless.â

The shock was even greater this time; maybe because seeing Emma the day before had been a trip in and of itself. Seeing Caleb across the quad less than forty-eight hours later turned it into an episode of Twilight Zone that Damon flatly refused to believe. It wasnât him, he decided. It looked like him, and the shock of yesterday was playing tricks on his mind. Walking closer regardless of this certainty, backpack hanging off his shoulder like heâd forgotten it was there, his heart began hammering wildly inside his chest like it was trying to cram a lifetimeâs worth into the space of a minute. Because that was Caleb. There was no mistaking him from twenty feet awayâDamon had spent too much time playing Bioshock beside him not to recognize that profile. With Emma, there had been anger, but there had been other things, too. For one thing, heâd believed sheâd had no idea he was here. This, however, was where Damon drew a realistic line, and an anger so white hot it made his blood boil filled his mind. Bag dropped to the ground beside him, he walked up to Caleb where he was talking to a couple other guys and shoved him without preamble, hard enough to make him stumble backwards. âWhat do you think this is?â Damon shouted, fists balled at his sides. âDid she call you? Was she lying yesterday? What the fuck is going on here, dude, because this is not a fucking joke to me!â @calebdelavan
âThe fuckâ Damon!â Chiseled features were slightly corrupted with utter astonishment, a tinge of relief bubbling beneath the surface to know that Damon was at least alive and well, from what Caleb could tell. âWaitâwhat?â His head jerked back the slightest bit before stuttering out the weak response, still reeling over the fact that his former best friend stood right in front of him while attempting to wrap his mind around the vomit of erratic questions. It was with a firm shake of his head that Caleb finally squared his shoulders, hands releasing the tight grip around the straps of his backpack to fall to his sides. âOkay, yâknow what? I dunno what youâre talking about; I dunno who youâre talking about, but fuck your questions right now. I meanââ a humourless, airy laugh was emitted, another small shake of his head in sheer disbelief before he continued, âwhereâve you been, man? Itâs been five years without something so simple as a text or a brief email just to say âyo, Iâm still kickinâ â allâs good in the neighbourhoodâ. Nah, you just fuckinâ go AWOL andââ His rambling was cut short by a quick lock of his jaw, small muscles protruding as he clenched his teeth and sucked in a deep breath. Although he knew their initial meeting would be a total gong show, Caleb hadnât predicted the severity of the blow up, or what all he would say to Damon. Losing his cool was also not on the agenda. âI let it go for a while. Figured you just wanted some downtime and that youâd be back, but... obviously, that wasnât the case.â
âyoure always on your computerâ well ur always on my nerves
