No sooner has Caleb voiced his protestations does Gray alter ITself back in what must have been a kneejerk reaction. This leaves the boy hanging tightly to the limp wrist of the so-called m o n s t e r , expression frozen in a grimace of shock. They need wonder no further, practically sitting atop one another as Gray’s not accounted for the space another form would be required to take in this little tree-top hideaway. The leg has indeed torn itself back open; no doubt an odd thing to see Gray without almost every inch of ITs form covered in aged fabric, but the limb beneath is slender, sinewy, and the exact same shade as coal. Sludgy black ichor trails u p the limb before breaking off into globules refusing gravity’s call, disintegrating in midair before they reach the treehouse’s low roof.
a yelp of shock cuts through the air , and caleb cringes as the cat twists and contorts into a far more familiar manifestation . skittering a comfortable few inches away from IT , sufficiently put out that distance cannot extend much further since gray’s overtaken much of the small space that is their treehouse , the child s t a r e s reproachfully . his discontent with this spontaneous , ill - thought - out choice goes unspoken , but is all too apparent regardless , easily gleaned from the momentarily frustrated look bright in his dark eyes ...
... that soon buckles under his morbid fascination . they’re quick to widen and round with curiosity and alarm and that reluctant shred of quiet , timid , stupid concern he’s fighting to quash . details of the injury translated to IT’s more humanoid form are drank in by the child’s naturally scrutinising gaze .
the boy would ask if it hurts , if only to demonstrate he knows his niceties , but there are two far more pressing questions coming to mind in this moment . besides --- IT looks more shellshocked by the sight than wracked with pain .
“ why is your blood --- i mean , why is --- that stuff ... floating ? ” a beat .
“ ... no offence , but - but what the hell are you ? that’s ... not right . it’s s’posed to go to - to the floor . ‘cause of gravity . i - i don’t ... you just , you don’t make any sense ! ”

Gray holds unexpectedly still as careful hands unbind the injured limb from its ridiculous human fetters, dismayed to see that not only have they DRUGGED and bound him up, but the ginger fur covering most of the cat’s body has been buzzed down to near-nothing. Not that this is…dangerous per-say. Obnoxious? Perhaps. Violating? Certainly. Gray stares as morosely as his little cat features will permit, down at the limb that hardly seems to b e l o n g to IT–tacky and painted with iodine, sutured shut for good measure–then slowly back up at Caleb. “…What is this?” IT questions in disgust, though there is a badly-disguised tinge of w o r r y in ITs tone. Perhaps lingering around the trio was beginning to have unintended side-effects? Mere moments after Gray has identified the threading, IT is already making to tear into the offensive material with an indignant hiss. He needs NOTHING to hold himself together, utterly unfamiliar with the concept of stitches.
oh , shit . that is most certainly not better ! caleb eyes the spidery black stitching with an open look of horror ------ he doesn’t know what he was expecting ... well , yes he does . a whole load of nothing .
the child knows all too well that he truly believed , rather stupidly in retrospect , that gray would be miraculously , admirably unscathed beneath the protective bandaging . somehow . undoubtedly IT must have been hurt when they initially found IT , and swept the oversized cat away to have IT subjected to such procedures , but ... it doesn’t seem the sort of affliction that should cling to something like IT for long , for some reason . hence his shock .
maybe caleb’s just built IT up in his head as something above mortal things like wounds and injury . something stronger than what IT actually is ? ... look , IT can smash itself headlong into a closet without suffering so much as a headache ! though now that he thinks about it , that’s when IT is within the form of a much more intimidating build . regardless , such childish views are rapidly shattering in light of this alarming new evidence . stupid . how perfectly stupid caleb can be sometimes .
“ it’s --- those are called stitches . s - suturing . the vet probably gave it to you because the wound must be very deep . they’ll , um , stop the bleeding and help the tissue start healing , and prevent infection --- wait , NO , don’t ... ! ”
an agonised grimace of protest twists his expression as he reaches to take a hold of the clawed paw poised to attack , gripping IT’s furry limb tightly in an effort to keep IT from undoing the vet’s precise work . fiercely disapproving , and more than a little irrationally anxious IT might scratch him like a particularly feral stray from the streets , caleb continues to sputter away .
“ ------ you know , the reason they stuck you in the splint was to keep you from doing EXACTLY THAT to them ! ! please leave them alone ! ! ”
... caleb supposes it begs the question of whether the ugly injury would transfer to the form he’s more accustomed to seeing gray in . not that he much wants to find out . being firm with an unreasonable feline is infinitely easier than with a great , hulking , equally unreasonable monster .
“ sorry ... sorry , i just --- let me put the bandage back over them , okay ? not the other thing , if you don’t want . ”
take-i-t / I T .
“Van…” IT laments with a groggy tone, pausing for a moment in scratching at the miserable thing to give Caleb a helpless stare. “Can you…?” Yes, the boy’s assessment is correct. Gray is indeed a proud fellow, loathe to be confronted by the mortality of ITs chosen, fleshy forms. However, IT is also lazy. And easily FRUSTRATED. To be BOUND by the laws of man (or beast)–even in part is a painful, humiliating endeavor. IT, a creature beyond human understanding, cannot break free of a simple plaster binding. Perhaps with a bit more concentration IT could alter parts of the cat’s body to facilitate a better grip, but he’s oh so TIRED and really would prefer to have it done for him. Sticking out the leg, IT puts on the sweetest face the furry, naturally austere-looking Maine Coon body can manage, tongue poking out slightly between numb lips.
a faint , sympathetic murmur bubbles from caleb’s lips , a genuine enough extension of his condolence ; just because he has reservations about gray doesn’t mean he can maintain a constant cold , aloof disinclination ... much to his distaste . he’s far too softhearted to be utterly unaffected by such a sordid tale ; doe eyes squint in an empathetic wince .
IT’s request for help surprises the child , incomplete and grudging as it may be , and his dark brows lift thoughtfully . the rapidly ebbing indifference that remains written upon his face softens before sputtering out entirely , though he’s not quite aware of it --- a relenting look overtakes his visage . he huffs .
“ ------ okay , okay ! i will . just ... jeez . don’t give me that look . ”
blatant manipulation !! caleb gripes inwardly , rarely melodramatic in mindset ; how can he know that and yet still succumb to it ?? hmmmph .
his small head bobs in a show of affirmation , thick curls bouncing with the motion ; they’re perhaps the only aspect of caleb his mother has never quite been able to tame and groom into something acceptable , much to her despair , persistently wild and unruly .
taking the proffered leg into his hold gently , the boy works to remove the splint immobilising IT’s limb and pulls the bandaging away with care . too much care , all things considered . it’s not in him to be mean . “ better ? ”
Wait a minute, this already happened.

“Be Careful.” The cat parrots in Caleb’s own voice before ITs eyes crack open, staring piercingly up at the boy as IT pants. Gingerly Gray tests the leg once more, but the stiff blue thing makes movement awkward and ungainly. Clearly, IT hadn’t meant for this to happen, and the rush of whatever was injected into ITs tiny body after he was scooped off of the road and carried elsewhere…it’s still lingering and fuzzing Gray’s head. Normally this wouldn’t be enough to cause Gray to blink. Alas…all living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit. Cat body–a fraction of a dose of anesthesia, and a stiff blue cast. He’s as good as helpless until something wears off. IT feels unwell. The ground is unstable, the walls of the children’s treehouse waver and bend in ways they should not, and Gray cannot feel the wood beneath his three furry paws; it’s all a bit much and does nothing for his temper. At the mention of Henry Bowers, the cat H I S S E S and puffs up until Gray is near twice ITs previous size, a deep rumbling snarl thundering from a body too impossibly small to issue such a frightful bellow. “H e n r y B o w e r s can TRY.” Gray spits, tail lashing back and forth, poofy and bristling. “Nasty…nasty little b e a s t i e boy .” Even stranger than a speaking c a t is seeing one attempt to work the wrappings off of its hind leg as if he still had fingers. ITs efforts are predictably useless, to which Gray can only lay on ITs side with a deeply unhappy sigh.
it’s jarring to hear his own voice reflected back at him ------ it rings a bit less fumbling and hesitant , his tone’s riddled with far less irrational uncertainty when it’s coming from gray ... but it’s his all the same . blinking owlishly , caleb fidgets .
“ i am . ” careful of most things , he means . overly cautious , even , his friends might say . caleb resigns himself and sits down , crossing his legs neatly and sitting up far too properly for a seven year old . it’s as if the kid’s never relaxed in his life ; even within the confines of their safe haven , caleb postures himself stiffly and speaks with uptight restraint . big brown hues regard IT with bemusement as his gaze rests upon the feline , equally intent and steadfast .
“ ... uh - huh . well . i’m sure he’d be quaking in his boots if he were around to hear that . and if you weren’t , um , a cat with a bum leg right now . ”
there’s a certain humour in his sentiment ... a sarcastic , dry sort unbefitting of such a little boy . lips twitching at the corners as though he’s suppressing some unseemly urge to giggle , caleb rests his elbows on his knees and his chin in his hands , small head slightly canted as he observe’s IT’s struggle . “ but yeah , you’re right . he’s a real jerk . ”
it’s odd to see gray in such a state ... and it makes him feel a little less apprehensive . he knows by now ava would probably be snatching up the afflicted leg and freeing it from the cast , rolling her eyes , lack of boundaries and general boldness prominent as ever . georgie would mince around it --- certainly ask first if IT wanted his assistance , and if it still hurt ... fuss over the whole situation with wide , concerned eyes .
but caleb figures if IT wants his help , IT is more than capable of asking for it . not that he thinks gray would lower himself to that ; IT seems a very prideful thing . ergo , he can continue to paw and claw at it fruitlessly as far as he’s concerned . his hands occupy themselves with fishing a packet of lunchables from his backpack instead .
“ ------ you didn’t answer my question . did a car hit you , or something ? ”
having to be “mature” at a young age sucks bc you aren’t really “mature-mature” you’re a child playing at a maturity bc you don’t have the foundation to be the bigger person when conflict arrives so what you do is ignore it bc ignoring a problem and being happy about a resolution look the same to your inexperienced eyes. Then you get adults praising you for a development above your peers but you aren’t really developing. You’re stagnant. Your peers will grow up and experience things and make mistakes and grow from them but you will keep yourself in this box, ignoring things ignoring ignoring ignoring until one day you have to face the fact… it wasn’t maturity you had. It was fear. And now you’re an adult too and you make all of your choices based on an emotional risk/costs analysis bc you don’t know any emotion other than fear & you have to start healing from your own childhood by making peace that you weren’t really a mature child. You were just a child who was given too much to carry & didn’t know how to say “no”.
take-i-t / IT .
A couple of soft grunts should be enough to make the boy aware that he isn’t alone. At the entrance of their little tree hideaway huffs the largish orange cat they all know to be Gray by now. Acting a little more arthritic and incapable in the cold, but his mismatched eyes are a dead giveaway. He complains again, soft trilling noises doubtlessly drawing the studious boy’s attention. When the behemoth of a cat finally manages to drag its raggedy self fully into the treehouse, flopping down immediately in exhaustion, Caleb is granted the ‘why’ to the many questions that surround this eldritch monstrosity’s odd behavior. The “cat’s” back left leg is wrapped in layers of stiff white fabric covered over in a bright blue wrapping, from paw to hip. Gray can b a r e l y utilize it, and doesn’t seem to have any of the grace or balance IT can usually maneuver with. Instead, IT gives Caleb a faintly nauseated look before squeezing ITs eyes tightly closed and breathing hard. Perhaps this IS the monster in all of Caleb’s half-heard tales. He fits the bill: shapeshifter, a penchant for spooking up ITs little companions (though never t o o badly) and an uncanny ability to be wherever IT needed to. Sure, Gray s e e m s to reside in Neibolt, but there isn’t much within the dilapidated old property to suggest that anyone uses it regularly, and beyond that? Not even Ava knows where IT really lives. What’s more, if he’s heard more of these stories lately, kids escaping to tell the tale, then that means the Monster of Derry–if it actually exists–isn’t having the greatest time at the moment. It…sort of fits. And yet maybe their otherworldly companion has just been foolish, managing to get ITself caught under a tire, or around a group of schoolyard bullies. Though IT can speak like any adult, and even reason decently, Gray also hasn’t proven himself to be brilliant in weeks past.
the creature’s dramatics certainly jerk caleb from his convoluted run - on thoughts , and he glances over his shoulder to regard gray with a momentary flash of concern . he presses his lips into a thin line as he quickly realises it’s not an actual cat in distress ; rather , it’s georgie and ava’s friend in the guise of one . pretty sure both of them are wishing a friendlier face were here to ask after IT as apposed to him , caleb grudgingly forgoes his musings in favour of letting IT in and shutting the door behind IT , if only to keep out the cold .
“ what happened to you ? ” he blurts , rarely thoughtless . it’s about the closest thing he can muster to ‘ are you okay ? ’ caleb justifies his blunt words with the understanding that the latter would be a ineffectual question to ask even if he did care all that much --- the answer is apparent , after all .
the child momentarily dithers ------ hesitates just long enough that a temporary conflict is clear to see . he tells himself his next course of action is taken only because poring over facts and evidence with a mewling monstrosity so close by is going to put him off . that’s all .
the uncomfortable feeling of pity , the softer slither of sympathy that filters in amidst his otherwise rigid disdain for IT goes unacknowledged . nope . he’s not touching that shit with a ten foot pole , ‘cause that kind of thinking was exactly how even ava , the naturally scornful cool kid who should share his apprehension if not feel it tenfold , went and turned all horribly oblivious to gray’s ... quirks . you know . the ones that align scarily well with his ideas if he thinks about IT too hard .
“ please quit that noise . you’re not dying . right ? ” caleb stoops before IT , an arm’s length away , but it’s still decidedly closer than he’s ever cared to draw before .
one small comfort keeps him from the terrifying idea that maybe gray is the one doing all of this ; despite being in such persistently close proximity to him for all this time , they’re all ... okay . not missing . not indoctrinated into some underground cult , brainwashed . not snatched away or dead in a ditch or eaten alive or whatever these worse monsters must be doing with their victims . otherwise , he’d have to point the finger . this morbid summer project that was a terrible idea from the get - go , surely the fastest way to get them disappeared like all those other kids , would have an answer .
normally he likes reaching one of those . it’s cold , hard proof that he’s a clever , capable little boy . so long as it’s right that is . but this answer in particular begs a new , even more overwhelming question : now what ? if it were gray , which he fights every day to assure his erratic young mind it can’t be , what the hell is he even supposed to do with that knowledge ? die with it ? that’d be his guess !
but it’s not . so he won’t . because all three of them are largely unscathed . why would an entity bent on hunting children not only pass up the countless opportunities to take them , many of them presented willingly by two thirds of their mismatched trio ... but play with them , too ? even if caleb’s not exactly leaping to be a part of the earnest bond georgie and ava have formed with gray , the fact it exists at all negates every single possibility he has any part in derry’s sinister happenings .
... it D O E S .
“ y- you should be careful . ” caleb shakes himself , sharpish . small head tilts at his feline companion uncertainly . he’d offer to help , really , but he’s not sure what he can offer a wounded monster . paracetamol ? “ bowers likes to --- hurt little animals , you know . shoot cats and stuff . just , roaming the streets as one might not be --- never mind . um , look , d’you need anything ? i mean , would anything --- help you feel better ? ”
@take-i-t liked .
his apprehension of the newest member of their friendship group isn’t exactly something caleb’s managed to be secretive about .
it’s not that he wants to be a stick - in - the - mud about their monstrous companion . were things a bit different --- that is to say , if his intuition didn’t scream in furious protest of IT’s mere presence , he’s sure he’d be just as starry - eyed as georgie and ava . perhaps even more so ; IT’s like something straight from the pages of the thick science - fiction books he’s so fond of .
however , as it stands ... the fleeting glimpses of gray’s unsavoury drooling and hungry(??) stares and rows of terrible teeth mere inches from his friend’s faces during their rambunctious games have set him on edge for the foreseeable future , and he hardly thinks that’s UNREASONABLE ! ... just because they choose to laugh it off , and explain such discrepancies in IT’s behaviour away , doesn’t mean he has to .
caleb’s staring at the corkboard front and centre upon the treehouse’s wall , head tilted and expression intense as ever . the senseless cult side is ignored . not because it’s entirely impossible , or a bad idea ... but because there’s not a shred of evidence that such a group is operating within derry . if even that can’t be proved , the theory is not worth his time at the moment .
his half is sprawling with pictures of old - timey monsters and scrawled pages of notes --- other kids around town have seen things , countless creatures that strike terror into their hearts ... and escaped the clutches of each beast by a hair’s breadth . talking to strangers has never come easily to him ... mostly he’s only managed to eavesdrop on snippets of their stories . still , their whispered , terrified accounts are proof enough ; monsters lurk in this town , they do . ones that surely have more sinister motives than chasing a mismatched trio of children around the neibolt house , commit far worse atrocities than casting him some occasional unnerving look or devolving into vacant dribbling .
... if somebody slinks into the small hideaway , caleb hardly hears them --- too caught up with deciphering his latest revelations .
