and during their THREE HOUR TALK neil realises something

"Neil grew up looking over his shoulder, but he'd always been looking for his father."

except NOW, in this moment, when neil looks over his shoulder to the seat behind him he sees andrew. it's such a beautiful moment because, both figuratively and literally, for once neil doesn't look over his shoulder in fear for his father. he looks for andrew.

it's the moment neil knows he's stopped living in desperate fear of his father, and neil begins living for andrew instead.

something i love about andrew is his sheer unwillingness to acknowledge that he is extremely soft for neil. so andrew just resorts to acting all aggressive and bothered as he sneaks in the absolute sweetest acts of service possible.

that one time he notices neil struggling to open a protein bar wrapper with injured hands, so he snatches it out of neil's fingers, rips it open and dumps it back into neil's hands without a word.

andrew shoving his incredibly thoughtful gift of armbands at neil then stomping away. and he's already slit the ends of the tape because he'd already anticipated it'd hurt neil's hands to open them

can't forget the iconic shower scene where andrew scrubbed him dry with a towel, 'careful around his injuries and too-vigorous everywhere else'.

I love the "it's better if he remains heterosexual" line. But not as in "Oh Kevin is confessing he's not straight". More like Kevin is confessing everything he does is for the eye of the public. Being heterosexual would factually be easier for Neil, if he wants a career, and an easy public life, it's true. Maybe it would be easier for Neil to stay in denial, not think about it, assume he's straight. And it's the same for Kevin. It's about Kevin not exploring anything that would be specific to him, anything that would diverge from the norm, not wanting to even entertain the idea of walking away from the path laid out for him. Because that would mean having to find out who he is, outside of Exy, and that would be too difficult.

This is also the man still half under Riko's thumb, who saw what Riko did to Jean when Jean spent too long looking at Kevin. This was the man who watched the rumor mill try to take down a man he respected after Jeremt got caught at The Party ™️. It's not just Kevin existing through the eyes of the media in 2006, but one who's watched the lives of people he respected and/or cared about be made inarguably more difficult because their sexuality was outed. He's trying to protect Neil from the media and give Riko one less avenue to attack Neil
