Ficlet - Shake the Devil Out of Me

there were some questions about what, exactly, happened when phil went to question dick grayson and tim drake. so, for HellsBellsSinClub and schneefink on ao3, here you go.

this is an excerpt from shake the devil out of me that didn’t fit in the fic. so, if you haven’t read the rest of the fic, i doubt this will make any sense.

At first, there’s very little about Richard Grayson that reminds Phil of Jason. Which is odd, considering their shared background and the fact that, physically, they could pass for brothers.

But Grayson carries himself like he’s fifty pounds lighter than Jason, like he’s never met a bad day or a bad man in his life, and there’s an easy, friendly charm to him that Phil’s never seen in Jason. When Phil shows up at the Blüdhaven Police Department and asks for a meeting, Grayson gives Phil’s badge a cursory scan, pours burned coffee into a travel cup, and follows Phil out into the street without telling anyone where he’s going.

He doesn’t even bring his sidearm.

Ficlet - Shake the Devil Out of Me

i’m still working on the soundtrack fills, but they’re all running a bit longer than anticipated. in the meantime, i’m working on prompts from this drabble challenge.

now, there’s not a power in the universe that could shut me up in 100 words or less, so these aren’t gonna be actual drabbles. but i feel (reasonably) confident i can keep them under 1000 words.

send me prompts if you’re inclined! please include a ship, or i’ll end up spinning endlessly through options.

this one’s for the anon who asked for phil/jason and 83. “I didn’t want you to see this.” this is from the shake the devil out of me verse.

Phil is prepared to argue that the mission, technically, is a success. He’s rehearsing the argument in his head, sketching out the outlines of his eventual report. “Target,” he says, careful with the blood in his mouth, “eliminated.”

“Jesus Christ,” someone says. “This guy.”

“Well, he’s from…fucking– what is it?” There’s a pause, presumably while the interrogator in question peruses the limits of his geographical knowledge. “D.C. or some shit.”

“Yeah? The fuck is he doing here?”

“Google Maps,” Phil says. He’s less careful this time. He feels blood slip down his chin, soak into the fabric of his once-respectable Oxford. “This is a very confusing town for motorists.”

Ficlet - Shake the Devil Out of Me

the next installment in the ongoing saga of phil coulson casually interrogating members of the batfamily.

this one’s for schneefink, and for anyone else who wondered what happened when bruce and phil finally have to speak to each other.

this is set at the end of shake the devil out of me, between chapter 8 and the epilogue. i wouldn’t recommend reading this without reading the fic first, but…eh. i’m not anybody’s mom. you can make your own decisions.

Phil’s in Caracas, guiding Jason through a cleanup job and admiring the view of the mountain range, when Batman drops onto his hotel balcony.

“Oh, hello,” Phil says, looking up from his laptop. “Coffee?” He nods toward the platter on the table, set for two, and raises a polite eyebrow at the scowl he gets in return.

It’s been six months since Phil punched Bruce Wayne in the face at the gala in D.C., and that length of time suggests to Phil that he’s been observed and judged, not hunted. From what Jason’s told him, and from what other SHIELD agents have reported in security meetings, if Batman wanted to track him down before this, he would have. Easily.

“You’ve been working with Jason Todd,” Batman tells him. It sounds like an accusation. Phil’s been considering it a privilege.
