The time loop theory lives rent free in my head.. my personal theory for how this happens is:

Noé surrenders his true name to Naenia after Vanitas death. Purasaded by the idea that he might be able to bring him back/change the past... in doing so, he gets stuck in a time loop, watching different version of himself try and fail to save Vanitas. Over. And over. Again... and, seeing the one you love the most die over and over, again, you're bound to become a little crazy.
