every time i think about overwatch's orientalism i go a lil more insane. 5 japanese characters all of which are tied to a very stereotypical mythologized version of japan. they're some of the few explicitly magical characters. all of them are part of clans and lineages and shit. every map that takes place in japan is an orientalist fairy land with idyllic old looking villages with shrines and gates and cobblestone and zero utility poles in sight. this game is so incredibly racist

not to play devil's advocate but I would say OW (Overwatch) is not racist, let me explain.

First, OW is set in the I believe distant future, so a lot of places are going to be futuristic big citys. And there are going to be a group of people who will deny technology like an example of today is the Amish. And now for the clans and lineage stuff I would say that can be just put up to lore. Like instead of just talon and Overwatch there's also Hashimoto and I forgot there other clan name.

And about how most of them are mythological based, I could toss that up to it's just what most people think first of when they think Japanese at least me. Lol because I don't hear Americans getting up and arms about how half the Merican heroes are old western or gun and run based.
