But they didnt have a happy ending
People are angry over the ending of Anne with an E. Specially over the dismissal of Ka'kwets story. However, it was the most accurate ending that could have been given to the story.
The people of Prince Edward Island didnt rise and revolt against the Indigenous Residence Schools.
There was no mass uproar.
No plea to free the children.
There was pain and trauma.
So much that it has been theorized that suicide behaviors in Indigenous nations are linked to the trauma endured in Residence schools (Elias. Et al, 2012) (https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=indigenous+residential+schools&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart#d=gs_qabs&u=%23p%3DaqZizYWtDHYJ)
Residential Schools werent abolished until 1996 and compensations for the victims of such abuse didnt happen until 2007. (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/a-history-of-residential-schools-in-canada-1.702280)
There is no happy ending for Ka'kwet because there simply is no happy ending.
The only hope of a happy ending is that we dont forget the crimes that were committed against Indigenous peoples.
And we fight for their rights.
