It was another PCS nice to another carrier strike group, and Natasha anyways found them bittersweet, at least maybe now she'd see some friends she hadn't seen in a while.
It seemed that her name spread around pretty quickly that she'd be aboard, she figured the hype about the mission would have died out by now, it was almost a year since they carried it out, but as she made her way to the officer's lounge aboard the carrier she got people recognizing her that she had never met. "I really hope my new WSO is somewhat chill." She muttered aloud as she entered to find the lounge mostly empty except for one other person, Bob. "No way that you're on the ship too!" She exclaimed, happy to be reunited with her old WSO. Sure while they were initially two strangers who didn't really have too much interaction outside of the cockpit, a part of her had grown to consider him a friend. "I can't believe they're having a hard time finding me an officer's stateroom." She told him, giving him a smile
After the mission he had been sent back to his old squad. He had settled back in with his previous pilot, but it wasn't the same bond as he had with Natasha.
The COs had noticed and set into motion a change not that Bob even knew it was happening until he was handed his orders. He'd asked quietly if they were serious before he had boarded the ship. He had somehow managed to avoid Natasha until she walked into the room. A nod from him. "I am." He said. "You know how it is sometimes, but I'm sure that they will." Bob said. "You know who your new WSO is?" He asked. He knew that he was, but he wasn't sure she had gotten the news yet.
Natasha hadn't been aware of the reason why she was being PCSed but she never really was one to argue with her orders, especially if she wanted to keep her career on track. Though now things were coming together in her mind, it wouldn't be a coincidence that the two were on board the same carrier.
"Yeah I'm sure they will eventually, this is a carrier for Pete's sake." She chuckled, sitting down on the couch in the lounge. "I wasn't told yet but I have a strong feeling that it's you." Honestly she'd be happy to have him with her again in a plane, they had a great working relationship, not to mention survived a birdstrike together.

“I am pretty interesting, aren’t I?” He matches her grin before offering a genuine smile. Not many people in the Academy felt the same way. Usually he was too much or too eccentric.
“Horrendous?” He squeaks like a mouse, nearly breaking his hushed whisper. His jaw drops slightly, starring at her for a moment. Goose laughs a bit nervously. “Me shopping for better clothes…no no Nat, I think we need to get you invested in Hawaiian. Otherwise you’d have to pry my shirts from my cold dead hands.” He slaps a hand on his helmet before placing it up in a high-five gesture. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Some would call it interesting.” She continued, shaking her head jokingly.
Nat’s jaw dropped after his comment, in her defense she was asking for it. “Me in Hawaiian? I could never pull off a Hawaiian shirt.” She commented, Natasha didn’t think that she’d eve look good in it. Strapping on her helmet she looked at her Tomcat before starting to climb up the ladder. “Goose you got the need for speed?” She chuckled.
“Ah I think you’d look great.” Now he finds it his turn to tease, a smile lighting up his face again. “Who knows some might even consider us twins.” Goose was sure that Slider would make a jab at pilot and rio matching-if the two went through with it-, some silly joke that Goose would have to fish around for an even better comeback.
He placed his helmet on and followed up. Goose settled in his seat, strapping in as he was completely ready for the wild ride. “You know me, I’ve always got the need for speed.”
“Okay fine I’ll concede, when we get done with training today you and me will go and I’ll buy a single Hawaiian shirt, just for the shits and giggles of it Goose. That is as long as I get to be the good looking twin.” Nat started up the engine to the Tomcat, thinking of how she would surely be ridiculed for it but hey everyone had to lie a little and try something new.
“Okay Goose runway is clear and we’ve got the go, lets do this.” And with that they took off down the runway and were soon up in the air. She expertly went from scanning her surroundings in front of them to looking at her controls, purposefully making he start of their flight a little jerky to mess with Goose. “You know I think the controls of this new Tomcat’s a bit stuck.” She chuckled with him.
Once airborne, Goose triple checks his radar. He never quite considered himself compulsive. One could never be too safe in the air. After all, at any stage of the flight communication and navigation would be crucial. With his eyes down on the green-lit screen, he feels the shakiness in the aircraft. Usually, he didn’t get nervous when something seemed sketchy in flight. Most times these things had simple explanations.
His brown eyes dart up to the back of her seat at first seeing if she feels it as well but simply decides to not say anything about it. Right as he’s about speak, Phoenix beats him to the punch. The humor in her voice, makes him slack in his seat. “Yeah, you know, I thought I felt something.” He laughs a bit before realization hits him. “Oh…wait a minute. You’re messing with me, aren’t you?”
There it was, at her comment he had realized that Nat was messing with him, just as she had wanted. “Oh Goose I don’t know what you’re talking about I’m just up here flying this thing.” She made sure to make it obvious she was joking about it. “In all seriousness I’ll stop screwing around we do have to find Jester and take him out, that is the purpose of this training mission.” She admitted, knowing that it would be one thing to goof off but another to throw away the opportunity of proving herself at TOPGUN. “Speaking of which see anything?” She asked both to her wingman in the other Tomcat and more importantly to Goose.
“Hey, I’m counting on you to fly us straight.” He snorts with laughter, the kind that nearly makes his face scrunch up at her nonchalant reply. Knowing that it was only Natasha messing around, let’s him loosen up a bit, any thought about the ejection rings above his head going from his mind.
Hearing the recap of the hop, Goose leans back up, the harness tugging on his lanky frame. His eyes dip down to the green hues of the radar, a gloved thumb gently tapping it as if it’d make the ‘bandit’ magically appear. He wasn’t going to lie, looking over and seeing Ice and Slider, he was antsy to beat Slider to the punch. He watches as the line makes a sweep, leaving behind a momentary transparent trail. “I’ve got him. Jester is 8 o’clock low, about two hundred knots closure.”
"Yeah but then there's also flying fun, which is hardly ever flying straight." She acknowledged. She let out a slight sigh at the sights in front of them.
Natasha looked behind her to see the other Tomcat in the air. She wanted, no, needed the opportunity to be at Ice and Slider and not a moment later she heard Goose tell her Jester was to their 8. "Goose, hold on we're gonna dip down." She told him, scanning around them before seeing the trainer that was their enemy. Nat was a natural at not only piloting but at being the most risky person to fly a fighter jet in her own opinion and this would only solidify that. "Hey Goose, question? You wanna be the one to take out Jester? You have that big red glowing button saying that our quote on quote missile is armed and ready for launch." She offered, knowing if he accepted it would be a great story, not many RIOs would get the chance. "When we get behind I'll fly steady and when you have a lock you can fire." She spoke.

Hey Phoenix how did you get your callsign
"Funny story how I got it, I got it after my bridesmaid dress caught fire at Halo's wedding."
Guess who's watching Maverick....again.

Ejections were never fun, you got bruised, you got battered and more often than not you’d get teased for it by the other pilots. Natasha learned that the first time she had to eject while prepping for their mission to take out the uranium facility. and that same scenario was playing through her head as she was nearing the landing deck of the Abraham Lincoln and somehow, in someway, shape or form had both engines get struck by a bird strike and had to eject with her Weapons Systems Officer. Having been knocked unconscious from the impact with the water she eventually came to in the infirmary of the ship, realizing that she had bandages wrapped around her head and ribs, no doubt she probably broke a few bones, and she’d be off flight status for a few weeks. It was only after she had made those observations that she noticed that someone was standing beside her bed. “Good to see that I have visitors.” She groaned, attempting to push herself up into a sitting position.

Nat sat at The Hard Deck, it wasn’t often she was able to come here and enjoy a drink, normally she’d be about five hours north in Lemoore NAB, but they needed all the pilots to come down to the Abraham Lincoln so now until told otherwise she was back at North Island. Sitting at the bar she looked around, there were no noticeable recognizable faces so she decided to just sit and enjoy herself, until her thoughts. “Yes?” She inquired, looking over her shoulder as she felt herself get tapped from behind.
Now that I’m actually actually back active and have the muse for Nat, partially because I jus rewatched Top Gun Maverick for the umpteenth time now that it’s finally out on digital release, Like this for a starter or alternatively let me know if you’d like to plot!

It had been a couple of weeks since the mission to destroy the uranium refinery. for the most part, the special detachment of pilots had gone their separate ways and to different assignments. But it seemed that now for the first time since both of them had been in TOPGUN together Phoenix and Rooster were assigned to the same carrier. It was the two of them and Bob who it seemed like was her new WSO for the foreseeable future. Deciding to give an unexpected visit to his stateroom she made her way across the carrier to his room. “Rooster open up! She called banging on his door. “I wanna kick your ass in eight ball!” She chuckled.
Rooster laughed, opening the door as he looked at her “well you’re on, let’s go Phoenix. It’s about time we played each other in a game, especially one like pool. Let’s see what you’ve got since you wanna be such a hotshot and see what you can win.” He teased her, humming softly as he fixed his hair and tweaked his mustache just a bit
Phoenix chuckled at his own cockiness. “Rooster, I’m just tired of beating Bob, it’s getting kinda sad how many times I beat him and I need a new challenge, which is you.” She joked as she fixed her bun and waited for him. Of course everything between them was good humor, it had been since they were both pilots at TOPGUN.
Rooster nodded and smiled, running a hand through his hair because he was happy to be seeing her. They had known each other since top gun and he was having fun, good humor as they called it but they were the best duo that anyone had ever seen, better than anyone because they always worked together and made sure they never made mistakes but sometimes, mistakes happen and he learned from them with her help.
Phoenix led the way to the common area that all the aviators shared. everyone had cleared out to either go get some sleep or do other things that they wanted to do. “I’ll even be generous and rack the balls for you and let you go first Rooster, cause you’re gonna need it.” She chuckled as she started racking the balls on the table.
Rooster nodded, smirking as he looked at her while she racked the balls “oh no, i think you are gonna need it” He says, teasing her like he always did whenever they were fooling around and playing games “i figure that we should get this started, and see who is gonna win first Phoenix” He says softly
“Oh I’m gonna need it. Wait till I tell Bob that not only did you lose to a girl, but also that you were being cocky while doing it.” She chuckled. Of course Natasha enjoyed when they teased each other. Nat handed him a pool cue as she chalked up her own before she leaned against the table, waiting for him to make his move, and see whether she’d land with stripes or solids.
𝘾𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙎𝙄𝙂𝙉: 𝙋𝙃𝙊𝙀𝙉𝙄𝙓.
“Rooster I think anyone would pay to see that.” She chuckled, flashing him a smile. Natasha knew everyone’s nerves were high and she figured that’s why she didn’t smack Hangman. In their time in the service she knew that when under a lot of stress and whatnot he tended to act like that more than normal, his way of coping with it more than likely. “I’d say his second favorite, the first would be in the air.” Natasha let out another little chuckle before turning fully to Rooster. “You know the closer we come to this mission the more real it seems. We’ve never done anything like this in our careers.” She admitted, letting her nerves show a little bit.
it’s almost funny how quickly the tone melts into something more serious. he isn’t surprised; he won’t shy away from it. none of them had really spent any time talking about what was to come. that may have been easier than dancing around it the way they had been, but she was right. they’d never experienced anything like this. even the training had been a test. personal issues aside, it wasn’t exactly comforting that this was uncharted territory even for maverick. bradley nods in response, letting a quiet sigh deflate his shoulders. ❛i don’t think many people have. it’s not like they’re here to talk about it.❜ his response resembles a grumble, the thought alone leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. ❛you can’t exactly train a miracle, y ‘ know? i don’t know, it’s just . . . real.❜ at a loss for a better word, he repeats her own back to her. ❛if anyone can do it, it’s gotta be us right?❜ attempt at bringing positivity back to the conversation falls flat.
Nat could see Rooster try to brin positivity back into the conversation, which she was all down for. There was no need to feel down about the mission Rooster was right, if anyone could do the mission it would have to be them, they were all in the top of their classes, sure not all of them number 1 but still in the top. “But hey you know since there’s not many and none around, you and Maverick can share the glory of knowing that you guys pulled off miracles. Maybe change your callsign to Miracle Worker instead of Rooster.” She chuckled. “As nervous as we all are, they picked the best of the best of the best.” she punched his shoulder lightly, though she did have the thoughts of the mission looming over her mind, there was a high likelihood that no matter how hard they had trained there would always be variables that they couldn’t consider and that could end up costing the ultimate sacrifice of one of the pilots.

“Great I’m gonna go find Bob and see if he wants to tag along, I’ll be back shortly.” Natasha said before getting up and searching for bob before coming back with a little frown. “I guess it’s just a girls night out, bobs about to call it quits.” She said, looking at her watch. “But first I think we should go get changed out of our uniforms, while the night’s still young.”
While Natasha went down to ask her wingman, Lina texted Fanboy and asked if he wanted to tag along. In response, Payback sent a video of Fanboy and Fritz racing as they shotgunned beers with the others cheering them on. That answered that question.
Catalina looked up at Natasha when she returned and smiled, “Sounds good.”
Nat smiled at Lina as she came back. “We good to take my car?” Nat asked the other pilot, fishing her keys out of her pocket. They soon found themselves standing in the cool evening air of California, the weather being predictable after having spent most of her life in the Southwest US.
