Two police officers reportedly shot at the Dallas #BlackLivesMatter protest

Early reports suggest an assault rifle was used at the end of the rally, which, until that point, had been peaceful. One suspected shooter has been reportedly shot down, with the on-going pursuit of a potential second shooter.

Update: The Dallas shooting started as a peaceful protest, not a #BlackLivesMatter attack. Unfortunately, people were quick to blame the protesters for the shootings, despite reports that the shooting was carried out by snipers separate from the protest.

Update: A fourth police officer has been killed in the Dallas shooting. Video footage from the scene appears to show the “person of interest” on the street moments after shots rang out.

Update: In a tweet confirming the death of a fourth officer, Dallas police said that the person of interest had turned himself over to authorities. They were also able to take a separate suspect into custody in the early hours of Friday, in addition to the man who voluntarily surrendered.

isn’t it fucked up how when you give money to homeless people, a lot of the time people get mad at you? like when i’ve given money to people on the street a lot of times people who have been with me have gotten on my ass about it, saying shit like “uhhh don’t you know they’re just going to spend it on drugs? so you’re actually just enabling them, and hurting them"

has anyone else experienced this? like the whole spiel about how you’re actually a ~bad person~ for giving money to homeless people? it’s so ridiculously transparently absurd, but apparently this is pretty widespread because i’ve heard it from a lot of people, mostly libertarian leaning people, ofc, but even a lot of supposedly “progressive” people have said that shit to me

Of course the assumption that all homeless people are addicts is classist and ableist but what everyone seems to forget is that

who cares where the money is going. Donating to the homeless is a good gesture that comes from love and compassion and honestly no matter what they spend the money on, it’s for a good cause.

Let’s say that the money you give them does go to drugs and/or alcohol. Have you considered the factors that go into someone’s decision to use drugs in the first place?

Homelessness is a huge toll on your mental and physical health. Short term coping mechanisms (negative and positive) are sometimes all you have to make it through the night.

Some hard drug addicts will literally die if they go into withdrawals. This is a “rock and a hard place” scenario where non-stigmatized clean/sober living is already hard to come by, let alone when you’re broke. Sometimes that $1 you’re giving to a homeless person is going to a drug that unfortunately is keeping them alive for another night.

There are other reasons as well. But in the end this way of thinking is fueled by an ignorance of addiction as well as homelessness. If you’re one of these people that prides themselves in being greedy and disrespectful to those less fortunate than you are, I hope you never have to learn the hard way why your way of thinking is deadly to the poor.

if you’re THAT worried that your money is going to go to drugs or alcohol, take them out to the closest place to buy food. HAVE a meal with them, keep them company, get them something warm and nice to eat. But of course, most people saying “oh but what if it goes to drugs” don’t actually fucking care at all, they just don’t want to give “disgusting bums” their money. The whole ‘what if they buy drugs’ rhetoric is just to save their ass if someone asks them why they sneered at a homeless woman laying in the rain with her dog on a street corner whose just desperate for spare change for a fucking coffee or a blanket. Because, what if, on the off chance, she’s LYING??? can you even IMAGINE???

and did yall ALSO know though that many places have actual laws against giving the homeless money?

I’m not sure how it works really. like I couldn’t tell you any of the laws specifically and I know they vary from city to city anyway. but panhandling (the act of asking strangers for money in public) is illegal almost everywhere in the U.S. and if a cop notices you doing it they can arrest and charge you. and it’s not uncommon for people to get arrested for it. a civilian can actually call and report you to the police if they see you panhandling and the police can show up and arrest you. even if you’ve ceased panhandling by the time they got there. they’ll piece together any evidence they can to “prove you were”. (which can include questioning witnesses at the scene and they’ll go so far as to get security camera footage off any cameras in the area. often. they do that. jsyk) and I’ve never been arrested for giving the homeless money and I don’t personally know anyone who has but I HAVE been caught handing panhandlers money and also refusing to aid police in an “investigation” against panhandlers they were trying to collect evidence against. and for these actions, I have been threatened on multiple occasions that I may be arrested as well. the most notable time this happened was in a bus station in Louisville when I WAS ALSO HOMELESS AND IT WAS VERY APPARENT IMO and I gave another homeless guy I had just met some of my money (because sometimes people are worse off than you even when you think you’re at rock bottom. remember that.) and a police officer happened to be strolling though and caught me just as I handed the guy some cash. now this guy WAS NOT EVEN PANHANDLING. we had just been sitting on the floor talking to each other. and the cop tells me I can’t give this guy money again or I’ll be forcibly removed from the bus station and maybe even detained. and I tried to argue, “why can’t I? this is my friend and I was just giving him some cash for a coffee. he’s a friend of mine. he didn’t even ask for it” and the cop went off telling me that I should be aware then that my “"friend”“ is a well known panhandler in the area and he’s disgusting and I really shouldn’t be his friend anymore now that I know. and I could keep telling him this guy didn’t ask me for that money but he wouldn’t ever believe that and “no one else from this area would either” (implying he believes he could arrest both of us without evidence and no one would take our side in the matter). and he degraded this guy so bad that I almost got detained for CONFLICT WITH POLICE because I wasn’t standing for it. (which as a fun side note, I only got out of by feigning a change of heart and trying to tell the cop I only give people money because of my religious affiliations and I was so sorry and the cop sat down and gave me a condescending “pep talk” and talked to me about Donald Trump and his own religious beliefs for like a half hour. you nod and smile and dry the fake tears and then you leave.)

so it should already be common knowledge that society as a whole hates homeless people and sets shit up against us but in the case that any of you were unaware, HERE YOU GO.

but my other point is please be cognizant that there are actual laws preventing helping the homeless. please help regardless but be aware of these things. BE AWARE WE RISK MORE THAN YOUD THINK JUST BY ASKING YOU FOR SPARE CHANGE IN THE FIRST PLACE. (because let me tell you, nearly all of us are not the type of people you should expect to even survive being arrested.)

I don’t mean to be rude, I am not homophobic in any way, shape, or form but I feel like that’s kinda of an unnecessary statement. If I was to say “I love being straight” many people would take that as a attack again the LGBT+ community or I’m trying to mock someone.

I believe to achieve equality, we can’t single out these characteristics about people.
