“Oh wow, must have been a hell of an accident. I get why you’re this exhausted then. Situations like tends to drain you quite a lot.” Adam said, relating to the feeling whist drinking eagerly from his own cup of coffee. He wasn’t usually stationed within trauma but with a few shifts in ER you could get a small feeling of the chaos it could be. “Sounds like a hell of a plan.”

“Yeah, yeah—I mean, I’ve seen worse, but damn.” Cam shook his head. “At least my stats were good last night.” Not one death out of four surgeries performed—which was definitely a win for Cameron, who usually got the most critical cases.

That poor woman” She couldn’t help but laugh with him. “I could even say the I’m your father phrase and you could totally impersonate Luke’s screaming” She offered. “Fame is totally overrated though, but if will take me closer to cross paths with Prince Harry then I’m up for it” Vera explained. “My heart is kind so apology accepted “ She smiled at the cashier “I want the caramel frapuccino with extra cream and tons of caramel, I want to much caramel that you’ll fear for my health. you know, diabetes in a cup? Please and thank you” She requested.

“Nope. I’m not rehashing that, not even for you, Queen Vera.” Cameron crinkled his nose. “I think that we might get kicked out of this coffee shop for causing such a ruckus, and I need some caffeine.” He grinned, a dimple making an indentation in his cheek, making Cam look a bit like a little kid in the way his eyes lit up. As she gave her order, he snorted behind her, opening his wallet and casually sliding a few bills onto the counter in front of her, a silent offer to pay for her order. “And I’ll have a coffee, no cream, no sugar.”

“So difficult that there is a coworker at the hospital who I have hidden in the women’s bathroom to avoid because I made everything that awkward.” He tilted his head back and laughed. “I’m sure you could. I’m not about to doubt your might.” Cam nodded, putting on a serious face. “Of course. What else would we use? Light sabers are the only way to go.” He smirked. “Yeah, I guess it’s something, right?” he asked, his face lighting up as he laughed again. “Of course, of course. I apologize.”

“I completely get what you mean. Patients can be so irritable sometimes.” Magenta chuckled, brushing her finger lightly over the forming bruise. “You’ll be fine, promise.”

“Yeah? You sure?” He laughed, letting his fingers graze over the tender, swollen area. “Might do me some good to get some ice on it anyway,” he added absently. “How are things up in plastics?” Cam asked, scratching the back of his neck. “I know I sent a couple of guys up there last night. Burn victims.”

“Oh, shit. Yeah, I think I heard someone else talking about that. I wasn’t on-call during that time, maybe I should count myself lucky for that. Sounds rough man.” Adam said nodding. Those big emergency cases was always horrible when they rolled in. For doctors and patients. Walking into the cafeteria Adam fixed them a generous cup of hot coffee each, and handed one of the cups to Cam. “There you go man, hopefully this will keep you from passing out any time soon.”

“Yeah, trauma started to overflow. We had to bus half of the patients to the Brigham,” he replied, running his fingers through his messy hair once more. Taking the coffee gratefully, Cam took a swig, ignoring the burning sensation that filled his mouth. “Yeah, seriously. Four more hours, then I’m going home and sleeping for a day.”

“Yeah, I mean...I’m fine. I’ve had worse.” Cam turned his head, showing her the side of his face that had some light bruising along his jawline. “Is it bad?”

“You should get some ice on it, the swelling looks worse than the actual bruise.” Standing on her tiptoes, Millie carefully took a closer look at the bruise. “He didn’t break any skin though, that’d be a killer.”

“Yeah?” Cam reached up to touch his face, grazing his fingers across the area that had started to protrude from his jaw, crinkling his nose as he felt a small signal of pain shoot through his face. “Yeah, yeah, that would have sucked. Good thing he wasn’t wearing any rings, I guess.”

“Yeah we’re quite a common type” He said, laughing softly. Gabriel was tempted to light another cigarette, but refrained himself from doing so, knowing that the guy would probably scold him if he did so. At his question, he frowned lightly, having never really thought of his smoking habits. He smoked when he was nervous, but not cigarettes. And he was pretty certain that talking about smoking marijuana with a doctor was not exactly the best idea. “Yeah, sometimes, but it’s more when I’m bored, or when I need to keep my mouth busy because I know I’ll lose that argument with my wife anyway.” He said with a small grin. He nodded as the man announced he was a surgeon. Gabe admired people who did such tough jobs. He knew he would never have been able to do something like that. “It’s very cool. I think doctors in general, you work really hard. It’s admirable.” 

Cam nodded, looking over the other man with a mild curiosity. He supposed that it was almost scientific, the way that he was observing the other person, but he wasn’t about to ask too many probing questions. That wasn’t his place, and this certainly wasn’t the time for it. Nodding again as he spoke, Cam decided to drop the whole cigarette thing altogether—he didn’t need to be that kind of annoying doctor. If he stayed afraid of everything that could potentially kill him, he’d stay home all day. Raising an eyebrow, Cam chuckled. “I feel like most guys I know can’t even match up to their wives when it comes to winning fights.” He shrugged. “I suppose. I don’t know. I don’t really think about it that much. I just like doing it.”

“People go around punching doctors? I thought that was just lawyers.” She looked at his face, seeing the bruise and cringing a little at the thought of the pain. “Just a little. It’ll probably fade in a day.”

“People go around punchin’ everybody,” he replied. “I think there’s something in the basic human genome that tells them, hey, there’s a guy I don’t like, let me sock ‘im.”

Cam winced as she touched the tender area on his face. “Man, he really decked me, though. Good thing I don’t bruise easily, I guess.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s what she thought.” He shrugged, looking at the cigarette he held between his fingers. He didn’t really care that much, actually. The slap was not painful, only on his ego. “Yeah, I know a lot about dumb people. But I guess there would be no funny story to tell, if they didn’t exist, right?” He looked at the cigarette again when the man commented on  his smoking habit. He nodded at his explanation. “Oh, it’s fine. I’m not a real smoker anyway. I throw packs away all the time because I don’t smoke them fast enough and the tobacco gets dry and gross.” He threw the cigarette in the public ashtray, looking back at the man. “What kind of doctor, generalist or you have a speciality? If it’s not too personal of course.”

“Still isn’t right of her to slap you, I suppose.” Cam mused to himself for a few minutes, tilting his head and thinking about all the repercussions of having the same job as the other man would have. He wondered if maybe, just maybe, he should have gone into pornos instead of medicine. Cam looked down for a moment, looking past his coffee cup at his stomach. He did still have the abs from all of that physical training, after all. Cam nodded. “I know a lot of guys like that,” he replied. “Do you smoke when you’re stressed?” Then he would know even more guys like that. “Oh, it’s not personal. I’m the head of trauma over at Mass Gen. A surgeon.”
