so my folks weren’t Massive beatles fans, but growing up, beatles songs were always in rotation in the car playlist in between a lot of 80s glam rock and greek music. the biggest beatlemaniac in my life before she passed was defooo my grandmother. she was SUCH a paul girl, both during the beatles and after, and ive got this memory of listening to ‘silly love songs’ with her in her apartment. my grandma from brooklyn > adrienne from brooklyn, sorry diva
anyway the beatles weren’t a big presence in my life or in my music taste until i was around 13 and hellbent on shaking the embarrassing screamo phase i’d had the previous year. so i ditched pierce the veil and black veil brides and just listened to like. a LOT of please please me. i guess my thinking must have been that if i listened to the happiest peppiest normiest music ever i could effectively force out my teenage angst? which is SO funny. like just watching those boys shake their little mop tops and hoping it would fix me
obviously i eventually listened to the whole discography, but for a solid year i was just looping the ‘63/64 “i love to kiss my girl yeayea wooo” era songs (which i dont regret bc those are club classics to me). i also rewatched the movies a bunch during this time, and i think it’s a very silly domino trail that my fave AHDN bit back then was john’s girly “i now declare this bridge open” to now this year writing transfem john lennon erotica.
my beatlemania went pretty much dormant from age 15 to around the time of my 22nd birthday at the end of september last year. something about turning 22 made me want to revisit a lot of childhood faves, including the beatles. in the fall i relistened to the discog and a lot of post-beatles albums i hadn’t heard and just fell in love all over again. and crucially i had this new interest i hadn’t had before in which beatle wrote which song and Why. which is a lethal rabbit hole to go down as a fujo because you will discover mclennon and you will open an ao3 tab about it. there is nothing i love quite so much as a toxic soul bond between extremely flawed people, and by november i was just constantly voraciously learning as much as i could about the beatles, watching get back, and reading fanfiction 🙂↕️
and i definitely think the thing i’ve really sparked to wrt the beatles these past few months is the abundance of talent in the beatles rpf community! there are so many amazing writers and artists here, and it’s just been such a joy getting to know some of them. and putting my own fic out there has been so rewarding in a way i wasnt expecting. has anyone else noticed that all you need is love
