Cammie frowned. “You don’t eat chocolate? What kind of inhuman?” She jokes with a laugh. “Can I come to all parties and eat your cake and mine?”

Riley was feeling slightly awkward. It wasn’t that she was awkward within herself, Riley was normally the life of a party. But Alex hadn’t lied when she said that most of the people at this party were going to be younger than her and they had a different version of partying than she did now. There had been a stripper after all and Riley had ducked out after that started. She took a moment with her beer, ruffling her hair as she glanced around the crowd through the window. “There’s definitely more people in there than I thought there would be…”

“There are?” Cammie asked, hoping to steal a moment outside. Though she should have thought better considering being alone anywhere gave her the creeps. “Your sister is a very popular person. I mean I knew I was signing up for Alex and her many friends.” Cammie didn’t even expect to talk to Alex as much as she had but she was glad for any moment she got with her.

“Well, I’m mostly here for the free drinks.” Brooke joked, taking a sip of her drink before looking over to the birthday girls. It was more of an affair that she expected it to be. “Anyway, you want something to drink? I’m calling this drink ‘white trash elegance.’ It’s basically just vodka.”

Cammie shook her head at the offer of a drink. “None for me. I drove here, so I don’t plan on having anything. Are you at least enjoying yourself? There are strippers, a rockstar, I’ve never really gone to a dinner party with all of this happening.”

Since they were all in the private dining room Alex had just been making her rounds at the table talking and doing a birthday kiss here and there as she worked her way up to twenty-two. Stopping at her next part of the table, she smiled at the people there. “So birthday kiss is a tradition— which means you have to do it. We can kiss on the cheek or lips, but I gotta get to twenty-two so come on.” Teasing as she took their hand and pulled them up. “We’re at five right now so we’re getting there. Plus Zoey is coming around too so you better get your practice in.”

“I can’t believe you’re going to kiss all of these people here. I can’t kiss you because I might rock your world, instead I’ll kiss your cheek.” She stood, kissing Alex’s cheek, laughing after she did so. “This tradition is something I’ve never heard of, but it’s cute. I bet some people are just waiting for the opportunity to lay one on you.”

I’m not very sentimental but I am practical. I found these chewable coffee and I thought of you. For a lady that’s always on the go, I figure this could be useful. There’s also this sweatshirt that I’m jealous I didn’t get for myself. I thought it was cute and a fun play on words. Now the glass cabinet is for your potions. If you’re anything like me, you mix a lot and you need a place to put some of your bottles. This way you can keep them organized and the glass cabinet is completely stylish. I hope you like it.

Alex: Hey so it's my birthday next week and I'm having a birthday dinner. Would you be willing to come? If you're working it's okay, but if you're off you should totally come.

Cammie: What do you mean would I be willing? It's your birthday, plus there's free food. I'll be there with bells on. Maybe even a bib that says 'Happy B-Day Alex'!

“There’s no such thing as ‘overkill’ when it comes to Star Wars, sis. I’d watch it every day if I had the time,” she chuckled. “That’s a tough call… I couldn’t even make that decision for you. I’m probably gonna dress up as Leia this time. I’ll save Luke for Episode IX.” Last time she had dressed as Han Solo. The best part of the new trilogy was getting the original trilogy crew in on it. “Damn, I’ve always wanted a secretary just because it makes me sound important. But I’m good Cam, I’m just getting used to balancing teaching and leading a whole department. Now I get why Marcus is grumpy all the time,” she joked. “That’s good, that’s what this new year’s all about. Starting fresh. You should make plenty of friends, there are a lot of great people here. Oh – you and Nic?” She wasn’t about to ask who, it’s not like Cammie had talked about anyone else romantic-wise. She honestly wasn’t enthusiastic about it but she also was willing to be open-minded about it. She was envious of her sister too. She seemed to be doing better in the pursuit of happiness than she did. But that was fine. She cared more about her sister than herself. “That’s great, Cam. I hope he makes you very happy. You deserve it.” 

“If there were enough hours in the day. Though sometimes I do watch bits and piece of Revenge of the Sith as a pick up to my stressful days.” It wasn’t exactly a light movie, but she loved getting lost in it. “If you’re Luke for Episode IX, I’ll be Leia. So no this year I may go Padme, and save female Vader for Halloween.” Cammie laughed. “You are important. Please don’t become as grumpy as Marcus, please? If you cease to smile, I’m going to have to devote more time and me and BB-8 will make this our mission for you to smile more.” Sometimes she wanted to make that her mission now. “I can tell, people are really friendly. It’s just that I’m not…as friendly anymore so I’m going to just try harder not to seem heartless. I felt like I was really mean to Blake but he accepted my apology.” Of course she was probably meaner in her head than out loud. Cammie nodded. “Yeah, he does. I’m letting myself have this, you know? So much was taken and life kept beating me down, but sometimes you just have to…let happiness come where it does.” She really wanted Morgan to do the same, but she didn’t know how to broach the subject of her happiness.

He just rolled his eyes and smirked. “Surprisingly, this time I was not trying to be kinky. If I said I was going to throw a fireball at someone else, then that should really get you going.” Nic couldn’t help but chuckle. “Maybe a little jiggle and a knock.” Then he thought for a second. “Then you can also yell out ‘Nic has such a huge dick’ into the hallway so I know it’s you,” he joked. He shook his head at her. “Cammie, I wear glasses that add to my hotness and will make you ten times more upset when you walk through the door. Is that good enough for you or is the warning too late now?” He grinned at her and lifted his glasses up a little off of his face. “Well, I don’t particularly mind if you just migrate over here. It’s not like I haven’t given you a key or you spend most of your nights here anyway.” When he got to her, he pinched her cheek softly. “Aww, you missed me?” Then his arms wrapped around her waist. “I mean, I wouldn’t exactly say no if you wanted to do more dances for me. I’m just saying I wasn’t prepared at this very moment for one. But please do them whenever you want. I don’t mind at all. I have a hot girlfriend, remember?” He laughed a bit. “Book for Detoxification class.”

“I was kidding. I don’t generally find fire on me kinky.” Cammie didn’t fight the laugh that bubbled then. “I mean Nic does have a huge dick, but the I might have to start fighting people that want to take a look or a test drive. How about a secret knock, and then I come in?” She lightly punched his shoulder. “It’s too late now. But I appreciate the belated warning. You’ve got me all upset now, how are you going to fix it?” she asked, trying to hold the pout and fight off her grin, wanting him to kiss her. “I think I’ll test out this migration with a drawer, and the one day, you’re going to have less closet space and much more Cammie. She grinned when he pinched her cheek. “Somehow, you’ve made your way into the ‘I think about him when he’s not with me’ stage, and I miss you when you’re not around.” Seriously, she didn’t even know who she was anymore, missing someone she’d see soon enough. It was definitely new for her. She kissed along his jawline as he spoke. “Oh, I’m going to do more. My favorite thing is to get you all worked up and you show me just how badly I was teasing you, and you pay me back tenfold for all that I’ve done.” She finished the sentence, placing a soft kiss on his lips. “I loved Detoxification. I found it and Toxicology fun. Made me feel like I was an investigator and a doctor finding the right antidote to the poison. Kind of what I do often without the poison element, so it was a so enjoyable for me.” She went from zero to potions nerd in mere seconds and she knew it.

Derek just shook his head at her. “Four too many? Four is too many for you? Making friends with the new healer is a good start. Maybe you should try to make more. Just a suggestion though,” he said with a point. He hoped she could get past everything at some point and be able to talk to people without wanting to burn them to a crisp. “Oh.” That was all he said about the tattoos. “Well, I think it’s good that you did that for those people. And here you are trying to pretend you’re a badass when you’ve got a big fucking heart.” He raised a brow at her to see what she would say to that one. Derek tried to laugh off her question. “No! No at all. I am not. I meant like love as a friend. Like oh I love having you as a friend, I love you. Not like please be my girlfriend, I love you. Big difference.” That had to sound believable. Maybe. Just a little bit. Sort of. “Yeah. That’s why we’re just friends right now. I’m giving her some space. She needs time to heal after everything.” And he didn’t want to push her into anything she wasn’t ready for. That just wasn’t who he was as a person. “Plans? You have plans? For me and your sister? You’ve got plans?” He wasn’t sure he even wanted to know what said plans were. Cammie’s mind was something he had not quite figured out yet. “You know you’ve got the same dumb fucking smile right now, right?” He said with a laugh.

“I only had three in San Francisco! More than that seems excessive. Granted I had more acquaintances because I was a very happy go lucky, yet snarky girl.” She noted her own past tense there. She was aware she was no longer as happy. Cammie glared at him then. “Derek! Do not tell people that. Take that back right now!” She eyed him then. “Does she know which L word you meant? So what would you have said if she’d taken it the other way and thought you meant the girlfriend version? Somehow here, I’m not believing you. When I first met you, you had a major case of the heart eyes for her.” Cammie worried about her sister every day. She knew that whereas she had her own demons and she was playing the best game of fake it til you make it, she was unsure whether Morgan was doing the same. “She does, but after a while, she’s going to need a kick to remind her to live too.” She smiled almost deviously. “I do. This is a love story that will be beautiful, but I’m not telling you yet because you already said ‘I love you’ before either of you were ready. You might ruin my plans. You’re already making me nervous about the timeframe here.” She was such a fan of Derek and thought he’d be so good for her sister. She covered her face for a moment. “I know…I know! I can’t help it. I hate it, but I don’t. Who am I even right now.” She sighed but it was a happy sound.

“Well, maybe we can get you close to the calmness you felt with the apothecary shop.” He commented, before pausing at her statement. “Why are you sorry? With everything that happened, you had more than enough reason to be standoffish.” 

“If we get that calm, it might bore you to tears,” she chuckled a little. “Because I don’t think I was very nice to you? If this is going to be my life now and we’ll be working together, I should try to make friends with my co-workers, you know? So can we start over?”

Morgan smiled. Her sister’s happiness was contagious. “Hmmm, I dunno. I’ll think about it,” she teased. Of course she was going to build her sister a BB-9E, how could she say no to that face? “I know, I already plan to shut down all the movie ticket websites so I can get first dibs when they go on sale. It’s IMAX 3D or nothing. Better get your costume ready.” She smiled. She only seemed like she was in good spirits because she was trying to make it seem so. “Not much. I have a lot of things to get in order for the department. Adulting sucks. Other than that, just enjoying the peace and quiet. How are you doing? Everything okay in the healing center now that we don’t have to worry about hunter attacks anymore?”

“First dibs! One of the many many reasons why I love you and your techno-badassery! Go big or go home! I will be celebrating this for a week! Maybe a month! If I go see it every weekend, would that be overkill?” Though she would and didn’t even care if anyone judged her for it. “But which costume? I have the Padme costume, a cute BB-8 dress, female Vader costume…” It was safe to say past Halloweens were always Star Wars themed with Camden. “Adulting always sucks. If you need any help, you know I’m around. I can be like your personal secretary or something if need be when I’m not at the healing center. Things have been sort of…great ironically. I’m working on getting everything back in order, making sure everything’s in stock. The attacks really depleted us a bit, but everything seems almost normal. I’ve been trying to make friends. I’m not sure how well that will go, and I might sort of have a boyfriend now.”

Nic had almost forgotten he gave Cammie a key to his apartment. It was something he had done on a whim and didn’t even think was weird. She was over so often that he was surprised she didn’t just live there at this point. He probably wouldn’t have minded honestly. When he heard her come through the door, he almost threw a fireball at the intruder. It took him until she stopped talking to get his barings. “Cammie, I swear. I almost threw a fucking fireball at you. Can you give me a warning next time?” He took a deep breath and dropped his book onto the table in front of him. “And it’s actually very normal, thirst bucket,” he said jokingly with a shake of his head. This nerd was his girlfriend, he was still shocked. “One day I’m gonna tell you to just move on so you don’t scare the shit out of me.” Getting up from the table, he walked over to her. “Please tell me you didn’t come here to give me any more dances. The first one is still engraved in my mind.”

She smiled when he said he almost through a fireball at her. “Kinky, trying to get foreplay started and I just walked through the door,” she joked. “I put the key in the door…should I jiggle it next time?” she wondered. “So you’d know it was me?” She was definitely amused that she’d surprised him. “Anakin, it’s not. These glasses are new to me. I need some warning. Something like ‘Cammie I wear glasses that add to my hotness and will make you ten times more upset when you walk through the door’. I stay in  constant state of mad at just how hot you are. It’s like I’m in a desert and there’s no water in sight,” she said honestly. She knew she was on a different level of thirst when it came to Nic. “I’m pretty sure that my stuff will just migrate it’s way over so when you tell me, all I’ll literally be bringing over is a clothes hanger. I missed you so I decided to do something about that,” she explained her impromptu visit. She wrapped her arms around his waist when he walked over. “So what I’m getting is, I should do more dances for you? Because I can. They’re great cardio, and if they’re engraved in your mind, even better.” She grinned wickedly. “What were you reading?”

Seeing Cammie inside of the coffee shop, she ducked into the warm building away from the rain. Alex knew she’d been blocked every time she tried to ask her question to Cammie so instead of waiting anymore she just went for it. Letting her hood fall back as she shook out her blonde hair and she smiled to Cammie. “Hey so before something else happens and I have to wait another week to ask you because apparently, every force in the world is working against me.” Giving a laugh as she pushed up her glasses, she still tried to keep her voice light. “Would you wanna move in with me? I know you’ve been living with Morgan for a while, but I have a guest bedroom that’s empty so if you want– it’s yours.”

Cammie was enjoying her coffee. She always liked to take a moment to just be one with it before she went to work. She didn’t know many people still so the chance of running into any her were always slim. When Alex came over, she smiled. The girl’s question had taken her off guard, but it was so sweet she thought of her and wanted her to move in. “You want me to move in with you?” she asked to clarify. “Is this offer on a timeline? Or do I have time to see if Morgan is ready for her apartment back and not having to share it.” She really wanted to make sure her sister was okay, and in a good headspace first. She knew that she couldn’t live with Morgan forever and she would eventually have to get her own place, but the biggest factor of all was the wellbeing of her sister. “You sure  you wouldn’t get sick of me?” she asked her. Though she knew with work and a boyfriend, she wouldn’t be there twenty-four-seven. Sometimes, she barely saw her sister.

Cammie had just gotten done with her shift. The one thing she enjoyed about working mornings was the she still got her evenings and nights to herself to do whatever she liked. Most of the time, that meant spending time with Nic. He’d given her a key which of course fell under completely practical in her mind. He wouldn’t have to get up and open the door as much. She was heading in when she saw him there with glasses on, reading a book and she’d gotten irrationally mad with how hot he looked. She just stood there for a second. “Something told me that you were going to pull this looking like sin personified as soon as I walked through the door. I knew it. You just…you just make me so mad. Who gave you the right. Why do you keep doing this? I’m trying to live, Nic Carey, and here you are sitting here with a book and glasses on like it’s normal!” Of course it probably was but he looked so damn good. She was definitely a fan of this look.

Nic actually had a date to something like this. This was definitely something he was not used to. When they walked into the ball, he looked around at all the masks before focusing on his girlfriend again. “It’s not conceited if it’s true. Always remember that, Cammie.” It was perfectly fine to be feeling yourself. After all, who else was going to do it if you or your significant other didn’t? And Nic was damn confident in himself and Cammie. Looks-wise and everything else. Her compliment caught him off guard as he looked around the room. Then he turned to her. “Oh, good, I was gonna tell you to say I look fucking good, but you already went there. Need some water, babe?” He returned the kiss and then smoothed down the lapels of his suit. “I’m just gonna ask it right now. How long do you think we’ll last here before we just ditch? Because I’ve been ready to rip your dress off since I first saw you in it.”

Cammie laughed, but knew that he was right. “I should get that on a wall somewhere ‘it’s not conceited if it’s true’. So that when I’m feeling myself and people try to rain on my parade I just hit them with that motto.” Though she doubted anyone would dare rain on her parade. “Believe me, if there’s anyone that’s going to be Nic Carey’s number one fan and tell him just how fucking good he looks, I’m going to be the one,” she vowed. “I might just need some water, but I don’t even know if water would quench the thirst that’s rising.” She winked. “Give me like two or three dances and we can at least mingle with the people we know which is a very short list for me. That way we say we were here, and then you can rip this dress off me like I’ve wanting you to do since I put it on. Deal?” she asked, reaching up, her thumb caressing his cheek.

Cammie had been to masquerades before, she’d been to all kinds of dances, but her date had never been this hot and she’d never felt quite good in a dress as she had when she sauntered into the ball with her arm looped through Nic’s. “You think this is what Beyonce and Jayz feel like when she walks into a room?” she asked, with a grin. “Because as conceited as it sounds we’re the hottest couple in the room.” She was biased of course but she didn’t care. “I couldn’t even have imagined you looking this damn good in a suit, how dare you!” she feigned anger before it feel away and she leaned in to kiss him.
