BIOGRAPHY
Camryn was born to two teenage parents who, despite the hardship this brought to two high school students, loved her with everything they had. She unfortunately had not been an easy child to raise in her first year, suffering from colic due to cramps and responding badly to formula, requiring her mother to breastfeed her. Still it was undeniable that she was treated like a princess. She was a typical infant, attached to her parents like velcro and sounding the alarms when an unfamiliar person was within her direct vicinity. Whereas parents usually warn you for the terrible twos, that’s when Camryn started to grow more into her own little person. She was inquisitive, able to amuse herself endlessly with the same toy if she needed to. She smiled more and cried less and no one would believe her parents if they shared that she used to be shy and, quite frankly, a grumpy child. Her laughter was a thing any person was quickly introduced to, laughing until she turned red was an easy achievement and with seeing how happy of a child she was, no one doubted that the two eighteen year olds were made to be parents.
Much to her disappointment, Camryn remained an only child her entire life. Her family was on the other side of the country and so she only really saw her parents, and the rest of her family on occasion when they visited her parents’ hometown. To compensate for the sibling aspect, Camryn was easy to make friends with, and she had a lot of them. She had a kind of compassion that made sure she was always that one friend they came to when they were in trouble, or when they went through a rough time. She always offered the space in her room for a sleepover, was willing to help out with schoolwork and projects and would even say yes to doing things that Camryn didn’t really like doing herself. Friendships meant a lot to her and it was a thing she would cherish for as long as she could.
Teenage life did prove to be a little stressful. She was known to have her head in the clouds despite being very intelligent, which would sometimes get her in trouble at school. Her grades never suffered, for she could study and make studycards like none other, she just tended to drift off in class and get caught when she didn’t keep track of what the teacher was talking about. Detention didn’t happen often, and she was always afraid to mention it to her parents but never kept anything from them. It was in detention where she met Steve. He introduced her to his hobby: Scubadiving. He showed her the underwater photos that he made, the things he saw, treasures he dug up. Camryn was fascinated and when he offered for her to come with one time she begged her parents to please please please let her go.
It was the start of the future for Camryn. She became fascinated with marine life, saddened by how pollution affected it all. She and Steve would help his father, who was a Marine Conservationist sometimes. Help was a big word, but she could proudly say by the age of fifteen that she had helped rescue a turtle who was snared up in fishing nets and needed healing before being released back to the ocean. She knew right away that she wanted to become a Marine Conservationist herself. That her and Steve started dating was an added bonus, but she always had a hard line to cross. As much as she was happy with her family, she didn’t want to be a parent herself at the age of sixteen. Steve understood, ever being the most graceful of boyfriends, holding her hand, praising her up, making her feel worthy. He was three years older than her, so by the time he graduated, she still had to go through two years of school. So they ended things. He was going off to college and she didn’t want to go long distance, it just didn’t feel right. They would still text, but it became almost non-existent when she saw on instagram that he started seeing someone new. It stung, but she moved on. She already had.
When her grandparents deteriorated and her mother had to start traveling back and forth, it was another time in Camryn’s life where she experienced sadness, but she knew why her mother had to do it. It made her coming back home all the more special, tending to make lavish dinners to welcome her back, which only fed into her interest in cooking and baking. With her mother off to Oregon for longer periods and her father working long hours, she was often just by herself, cooking, studying, reading, anything to pass by the time. When her best friend suggested she was going to do a gap year after graduating, Camryn felt a tickle of excitement. A lot of kids did that these days, didn’t they? What if she did too? She set her parents down, asking them what they thought on the matter and together with their support and enthusiasm, asked them for help in finding a good job for after school so she could already save up. Traveling wasn’t cheap and she aimed big: Australia or New Zealand. Her parents told her they would double what she had saved up if she kept her grades high, which was enough of an incentive for her to reach for the stars.
For two years, she worked hard. She kept her grades up, went to work with a smile on her face at the local movie theater and was even promoted to manager. She still found time for hanging out with her friends, going shopping and making car trips, even getting her licence herself, and to spend time with her parents. Game nights, baking sundays and just having good chats. It was no surprise when she became valedictorian when graduating, her speech being one she would rewrite over and over until it felt exactly right. Now that she was a graduate, she was all ready to make her dream come true. She had bought scuba equipment, bought a plane ticket to Asia, traveled to countries like Thailand, Japan, Singapore and Vietnam only to end up in Australia where she bought scuba equipment, joined a local diver team that she had already contacted years before. At a certain point, she was certain she was going to develop gills or turn into a mermaid with how much she was in the water. She was sad to leave Australia behind, but she had signed up to enroll in Chapman University back in Kismet Harbor, where her parents had ended up moving to, ready to start the next chapter of her life.
