Just to add my input here as a crocheter, I PERSONALLY love Red Heart Super Saver yarn for specifically using it to make amigurumi and C2C blanket projects. (If scratchiness is an issue with this yarn, I always machine wash my yarn and it slowly turns soft with the right technique).

In my opinion, I say do the research on the person and what they would like, since all “magicians” of yarn crafts prefer a yarn of their choice which can vary. We are all different in our crafting so we all have different tastes. And I would double the statement above and say give a gift card to be safe. We will still love you regardless for thinking of us!
