Lesson: "Deaf", "Blind", and "Mute"
These are very simple signs that I believe are just useful to have, because you never know what signs will come in handy when.
Deaf:
Making the sign for “D” with a hand, start at your lips with your index finger over your mouth, then move it up to your ear. To help remember it, think of it like saying “silent hearing” (a universal motion for “quiet” combined with pointing to your ear) which translates to “deaf”.
Blind:
This is the ASL-specific sign for “blind”. Making the sign for the letter “V”, but curl your index and middle finger half-way down. Bring the hand up to your face, bent fingers facing you. You can think of it like your two fingers blocking your eyesight. This is “blind”.
Blind V2:
This can be an alternate version of “blind” (usually found in SEE or PSE). Making the “V” letter again, you bring your hand down in front of your face and curl your fingers as you do so. It is not as widely recognized as the ASL version, but I used it as a great starting point (and still use it in conversation because it’s more comfortable for me).
Mute:
There is no clearly defined sign for “mute” in ASL specifically. How I’ve been taught by my deaf friend, is that it is adapted by utilizing the same motion you use when you want someone to be quiet in a library or a place you’re trying to study.
This often gets confused because that motion is just that - asking someone to be quiet. It is determined by context which is which in my experience, because this is not usually a recognized sign for “mute”. I did find a video where there was a three-part sign for it, but I have never seen it before in my life (and neither have a few of my friends who also know sign), so I am skeptical of its validity.
If you’re uncomfortable by this adaptation, finger-spelling “mute” is perfectly okay :3
[Side note: if you were to make an “A” with your hand and bring it sideways up to your lips, with the tip of your thumb facing upwards towards the sky (and knuckles facing out in front of you), you would have the sign for “secret”]
