bruno knows from eavesdropping on the dinner table that pepa is pregnant, and he knows when antonio is born, of course, and of course he’s already resigned himself to never being able to actually meet his youngest nephew

the one thing keeping him from running out of the walls and begging to be let back into the family is that he’ll at least be able to see antonio, and he spends the days after the baby is born waiting anxiously for a moment where they bring him out of the nursery and into the kitchen (the rats are fretful, wondering why bruno isn’t playing with them like he usually does. he pets them absent-mindedly but doesn’t look away from the peephole, he doesn’t want to miss his chance). but when they finally do bring antonio to the kitchen, it just happens that the angle of bruno’s usual viewpoint and the angle of where pepa sits means he can’t actually see his new nephew’s face at all. he resigns himself to that, too. that he’ll just have to wait until antonio is old enough to run around to see anything other than a little bundle of blankets. another thing he’ll have missed out on. he really had wanted just to see him.

and then one day about a week after antonio is born, when pepa is sleeping, félix finds his daughter in the kitchen with her new baby brother. “what are you two doing, mijita?” he asks, and she smiles and says, “i was just making sure antonio knows the whole family” pointing at the family tree, and of course félix has no reason to take any notice of the fact that she’s holding the baby up so that his face is at the same height as the crack in the painting

     “Abuela is wrong.”

Dolores’ tone is soft and reserved, rather unlike her lively and boisterous cousin. She reaches out a hand and gently takes Mirabel’s in her own.

     “You are just as special as anyone else in this family. Just because the Miracle didn’t give you some kind of power does not mean you don’t have a gift to share with the world.”

The elder offers a small reassuring smile, but it fades a moment later.

     “I’ll tell you something I’ve never told anybody before. You know how Isa is only a few months older than me? So she got her gift first? And such a wonderful gift, for the girl that was always Abuela’s favorite. When it was my turn, I was so excited because I thought I’d finally have a chance to be Abuela’s favorite, even if it was for one night. And when I got my gift, all the noises were so loud it scared me so much, Mami had to spend an hour calming me down. When I went back to the party, Isa was making flowers for all the guests. And Abuela had all her attention on her. Never came to check on me once.”

Dolores squeezes Mirabel’s hands.

     “All that to say... Abuela isn’t always right. She’s not right about me, and she’s not right about you, Mira. You’re amazing all by yourself.”

Dolores’s eyes widen at Antonio’s admission. If he was having nightmares, she should have heard it. What good was her gift if she couldn’t even hear when her hermanito needed her?

Pushing his hair out of his eyes, she frowns and holds his face in her hands. Antonio is so much wiser than his years, and kinder than any of them deserve.

“¿Pesadillas? Ay, Toñito, debiste haberme dicho. What kind of bad dreams?”

She rocks him in her arms and squeezes him tight with a little squeak.

“Did you know Mirabel used to have bad dreams? When she was your age. I can’t blame her, after her gift ceremony, but I could hear her. I never told her, but sometimes I’d knock on her door and tell her I couldn’t sleep because the rats in the walls were being too loud. I’d ask if she’d like to play a game, or sneak down to the kitchen and see if tía Julieta had any sweets left over. And pretty soon, the bad dreams stopped.”

“I didn’t want to tell you. I didn’t want to bother anybody.” Antonio admitted rather quietly, looking at his sister. Tears threatened to spill from his eyes as he opened his mouth then he shuts his mouth. A shaky breath, he didn’t want to tell his sister about his dreams. He didn’t want to make her sad, he didn’t want to make her feel guilty. He embraced his sister tightly, listening to his sister talk about Mirabel and how Mirabel got her dreams, bad dreams. “What kind of dreams did she get, big sis?”

    “Mi pequeño jaguar, you are never a bother. Not to me, or Mami and Papi, or Mira, or anyone else.”

Dolores keeps her arms around him, still rocking him slowly as she speaks.

     “We all have bad dreams now and then. About things we’re afraid of or worried about. Things we experience during the day and our minds weave into dreams, good and bad. When Mirabel was your age, she had bad dreams about her door disappearing for months after her ceremony. Sometimes I have bad dreams, too. About losing my hearing, or being lost, and unable to find my way home. But that’s all they are, just dreams. And we wake up safe in our beds with our family near.”

She kisses the top of Antonio’s head and gives him another squeeze.

     “Go on, tell me what your dreams were about. It’ll help, trust me.”
