Ok so people mad that Nicki wasn’t nominated and all that.  That’s cool.  But where’s the Asian artist?

Has anyone ever thought that maybe Anaconda wasn’t nominated for vid of the year because it wasn’t that good?  It’s literally Nicki shaking her ass for 90% of it.  Not saying I don’t love the video or think its necessary and empowering for women but come on its not ground breaking in anyway.  I honestly just think she’s believing her own hype so much and comes off as whiny.  Beyonce was nominated for VoTY and so was Bruno and Kendrick so I don’t see how she is playing the race card.  If Beyonce was the only Artist of colour up for nomination yes there is definitely a problem.  A lot of people are saying that oh Beyonce being awarded isn’t enough.  Well sure if the nomination list was filled with white women.  The nomination list looks very balanced to me.  I think each video nominated definitely deserved it.  Stop making everything a race issue and stop defending Nicki when she is clearly wrong without thinking for yourselves.  

And as for the Feeling Myself video.  It is basic as fuck.  And to put it on Tidal and have to pay 20 odd dollars just to watch it? I don’t think so.

Nicki wasn’t talking about it in that sense, like that video was most definitely a first for all kinds of women’s music videos, the quality of the video itself is up there, proven by the views it dragged in on its first day. Like what is a “good” music video? It’s a video that gets people hyped, that gets people talking, that changes the game. That’s what “Video Of The Year” makes itself out to be. Then, why, was Anaconda not even nominated.

Was MTV scared of having a nominees list without a white person on it?? You can’t tell me Nicki’s work, didn’t deserve a spot up there.

EITHER WAY, this whole dilemma goes much farther than Anaconda being a “good video.” This is Nicki speaking out on a serious issue in the pop culture system. Anaconda — I’m sure — had all the “qualifications” to be nominated for video of the year. At the very least nominated. NOW, the VMA people knew damn well, that if Beyoncé, our lord and saviour, wasn’t on that list, people would be calling them out.

Nicki “playing the race card” was probably the best thing she could have done because if she had not brought attention to the matter (and gotten people’s head gears turning) this is an issue no one would ever peep of. AND YOU BEST BELIEVE the white side of the pop culture spectrum, would never bring it up. Because they don’t deal, and they don’t understand it.

While I understand how Anaconda not being a “good video” could simply explain this, I’m glad Nicki did not let this slip.

Taylor’s fuck up turned Nicki’s statement into beef. And you know what? Good. People are paying attention. People are starting to realize how much white privileged people do not understand.

This all just goes so much farther than the video Anaconda and it’s “quality.” It’s time people start realizing.

You’re just another blind fan.  Anaconda is literally one of my fave vids of all time but if you think about it it’s not VoTY worthy.  MTV was not “Scared of having a nominees list without a white person on it” those artists were nominated because they’re videos deserved it.  The nominee list was fair.  Anaconda while killer is not the first of its kind in any way.  Repping curvy women? Lil Kim has been repping curvy before Nicki even ripped off her style.  So has Queen Latifah to name another.  The musical Hairspray has a big focus on curvy girls too.  Because she did a lap dance for Drake? Not worthy of a nomination.  A first because it represents women in general for the feminist movement? Beyonce and Lil Kim to name a few have been doing that and Christina Aguilera repped feminism before it was “cool” (for lack of a better term).  Honestly there is nothing “new” or “groundbreaking” about the video as hella fierce and sexy it was.

In terms of the whole Taylor thing I don’t think she should have fed into it by tweeting about it.  BUT Nicki’s tweet was 100% directed at Taylor.  She made a jab about if a video had white slim women it would win.  If you look at the nomination list the only vid that had a cast of slim white women was Taylor’s music video.  

Honestly I am so glad when celebrities call out the double standards and racism in not only the industry but in everyday life but she had nothing to back up her claim besides the fact that she thinks her video is God’s gift to the world.  To be honest she comes off as whiny and arrogant because her video didn’t get nominated for that particular category.  Eventually by crying racist wolf every time she doesn’t get what she wants diminishes what we are trying to fight for.

Valentine's Day
