My animal is lacking in size again...
I am a monster,
(yes) I am a creature,
yet, I gaze upon this world
and all I see is beauty—
Let me introduce my latest obsession: historic photography of nuns having fun, doing normal people stuff. Special shout out to the absolute badass series about the San Antonio convent on their beach adventure!
I don't get why everyone is always ragging on the concept of settling. Like, sometimes improvement is not a realistic goalpost and Better™ can only be achieved by making sacrifices that in the grand scheme make a lot of things decidedly worse... So yeah get with the program if your only realistic options are The Same or The Same But Just Worse, then you go for broke and you fucking settle, because staying at the same place is not necessarily stalling. Sometimes it's standing your ground and it's fucking heroic.
Sometimes I think about the wild nature of endless chains of causalities rippling out in every direction from every action and interaction, and how people can do the tiniest thing, make the smallest of gestures and not think twice of it, and how they would never know that they fundamentally changed another person's life. And how that's both terrifying and beautiful.
Like when I feel really low, I like to remind myself of the handful of tiny yet magical moments where I encountered a random act of kindness that hit just so, and how those moments were so impactful, so meaningful that I still think about them decades later. In fact, I think those are the moments that became the schematic for the type of person I want to be, and the way I want to interact with the world around me. In a way, these strangers made me realize that the consequences of my actions don't need to be a looming threat, hanging over me at every turn. They can equally be a promise.
So the Louvre heist is sad but funny
But what's funnier is the timing based on OTHER French news.
If I have understood correctly, the French government is in complete turmoil right now: a PM who lasted like 14 hours in office (who I think has been asked to come back!? Despite insane unpopularity) and an increasingly unpopular (that's sugar coating) president.
And last week, a descendant of Louis XIV (the king who was beheaded during the French Revolution) basically went "Hey guys ;) " in reference to all the government turmoil.
Were. Were the French crown jewels stolen because they're going to crown this guy king of France.
It won't happen but when it does, I called it.
Ok I'm not even gonna pretend that I follow the news at the best of times because I live under a literal ton of pebbles and my deepest desire is to forget about the woes of my fellow human being, but... Sometimes there are those magical moments in life where you just been so fucking busy for weeks that you literally forget that the rest of the world still exists outside the bubble of The Thing You've Been Doing™, and then you open Tumblr at random and read this ⬆️ and you just sit there for a moment wondering what in the fuck else you might have missed...
My two favourite things in life, in one adorable photo.
Such a happy running beast 🥰
I'm sorry to announce that my kitten has been eaten by shark
My therapist is a non-native English speaker (so am I for that matter, but that's beside the point), and sometimes I wonder how much that influences my experience with her as my therapist. Not that she isn't perfectly capable of expressing herself, or understanding what I'm trying to express, but sometimes the exact way she phrases things just gives them a new, probably unintended layer of meaning, and also makes her sound absolutely profound in a way where I can't decide whether her choice of words was entirely deliberate and masterful, or the slight language barrier of two non-native speakers sharing a common third language just accidentally enhances her effectiveness... In either case, I'm not complaining, just quietly compiling my Best of Britta list lol
Dunno about y'all but I'm an eternal sucker for a good "Unexpected Ally" trope. Like, I get how it's somehow considered unrealistic/unearned, but I'm sorry that's like, jaded cynical horseshit? Why in the name of sanity would it be necessary for Mrs. Cobb to be a bigoted transphobic asshole, just because she is a working class little old lady in rural England? Instead, she chooses to be an absolute delight, and you know what, 20 years later, this scene still warms my heart and believe me you, in 2007, my confused little undiagnosed-autistic-undiscovered-trans-ass-brain was absolutely blown the fuck away by any character on tv showing any degree of respect or sympathy towards any of the ones I would/could/wanted to identify with...
I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence
Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.
Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.
u r absolutely right I have SO many complaints about Windows omg.
For anyone who'd like to follow along, I'm gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they're more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I'll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.
For the Device Setup
"OOBE" stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that'll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don't have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here's how you get to it:
Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f
Now when you're brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don't have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.
Group Policies
You don't have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can't do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.
I'm gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this
It'll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c
Start Recommendations
In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the "Turn off" ones bumped to the top.
Here's what you should set:
Turn off user tracking: enabled
Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
Do not search Internet: enabled
Windows Spotlight
Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content
Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled
Cortana
In the side menu, this one's back at the top under Computer Configuration. You're gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search
Allow Cortana: disabled
Don't search the web or display web results in Search: enabled
News and Interests
In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.
Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled
Microsoft Account Login Nudges
When you don't use a Microsoft account they'll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can "get the most out of your experience" *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let's just open up the regular settings.
Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ノ u are done.
Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity's sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol
This is all extremely good information, thank you very much for the addition!
I endorse this as an IT technician. I do this to every new Win11 device I set up.
As a bonus, run Chris Titus Tech's debloat tool on it.
Having Fun with Technology
It allows you to add tools, remove/disable shitty parts of windows, and easily change some settings. My default is running the preset for a desktop/laptop and applying security update settings, but there are so many options to customize. I used it on my personal laptop.
@canis-lunaris since you'll have to run windows 11 on the new computer
Remember kids: whenever you do something that brings you joy and someone tells you to "grow up"/"stop being so childish"/"[thing that brings you joy] is for babies and you're too old to [enjoy] it", they're not trying to help you act like An Adult™.
They might justify taking something essential from you with this fake concern. They might not even be aware of what feeling prompted them to say these things to you, but here's the truth: that feeling is called jealousy. They're just trying to kill your joy.
