I love this, though, because my favorite thing about Superman is he isn’t Batman. I love Batman too, but Superman isn’t a dude who decided to live his life in pursuit of a vendetta against society when he was eight and then just did nothing for the next two decades but get super jacked, become the world’s greatest detective, and memorize every strategy used by every winner in every field of competition in history. Superman is a very good-hearted person who knows how to bale hay, use AP Stylebook, and break meteors into manageable bite-sized pieces by hitting them real hard. And I’m not saying Superman isn’t smart. He’s a bright guy, he’s just not like, one of the celebrated geniuses of the DC Universe. The best thing about Superman is he is basically a normal dude who happens to be orders of magnitude stronger than anyone else. Normal dudes have brain farts. Normal dudes are presented with a life-or-death situation they have less than four seconds to resolve and make a decision that is not optimal. Normal dudes aren’t typically asked to rescue a child from a 10,000 ton machine bearing down on him at 85mph, but if they were, they would probably sometimes panic a little and do dumb shit like ruin a train when they could have just whisked the child to safety.
I think sometimes Superman makes the wrong decision, not necessarily to the result of extreme catastrophe, but something like this, where everyone is standing around clapping and cheering and the kid’s parents are weeping in gratitude and they want to pose for a picture for the 6 o’ clock news with Superman and the conductor, and in the crowd someone is like “Why didn’t he fly the kid out of the way?” and rather than rolling with the fact that the emperor is naked his friend just says “Shut up, Drew, it’s Superman.”
And then, because I also love Batman for very different reasons, I imagine that later on the same day Bruce Wayne gets a phone call and Clark Kent is like “Hey, Wayne, I uh, need a favor.”
“Do you now.”
“Yeah, I, uh, kind of owe the Union Pacific Railroad $60,000.”
“Oh, and why’s that?”
“Come on, don’t do this to me. It was all over the news.”
“I’m prepared to write you a no-strings-attached check for the full amount on the condition that you explain your entire thought process from beginning to end.”
Anyway, that’s why I like Superman.
this is god tier commentary

things I love about phineas and ferb
main stream representation of a blended family that all loves each other very much with no drama over the fact that technically, they are step-siblings
Ferb is largely non-verbal and does a lot of his communication through non-verbal means and literally no one ever makes fun of him for that, like it’s acknowledged but not shamed
Perry also does a lot of non-verbal communication, but he is a platypus
the use of Doof’s tragic backstories to highlight the fact that they explain but not excuse his actions. they are told in a way that you feel bad for Kid Doof, but that doesn’t make it okay to try to mind control the entire tri-state area
the play on all of the repeative actions, there’s a formula to the show and by the later seasons, the characters have acknowledged that and a lot of the humor comes from that
almost all of the main characters (minus I think Phineas and Candace) have a cultural background that is acknowledged and explored, and even shared among the group.
the acknowledgement that Isabella is Jewish during the Christmas episodes, but also that she doesn’t celebrate Christmas and still wants to help her friends save something that is important to them
Buford and Baljeet seem to have some sort of understand and boundaries that only they understand which is like vaguely problematic, but obviously they care about each other
there is a crime fighting platypus
that even though it’s a kid’s show, it demonstrates a lot of common frustrations that kids have. Candace is always frustrated that her mother doesn’t believe her. Carl is upset with Major Monogram for never thanking him.
Candance and Jermey’s relationship ends up being a really awesome one, because he knows exactly what she’s like, and unlike some of the other people in her life (her mother, Stacy and Jenny), he doesn’t mind at all. in fact, he plans for her running off to bust her brothers. almost always. he’s just 100% okay with it and content to bring thier date along on her busting plans.
just the can do spirit that Phineas and Ferb have. almost nothing ever stops them. and like… they obviously put a lot of thought into how things work but like they just wanna have fun
the giant floating baby head
Vanessa and everything about her
actually, the friendship between Vanessa and Candace that we watch as they meet and it ends up growing until eventually they are actually friends who hang out even tough they are drastically different people from drastically different friend groups with so many different interests
that they have an episode entirely devoted to aglets. I fucking love aglets man.
the fact that Phineas and Ferb meet aliens and immediately make friends with them. because that’s just who they are
that Lawrence 100% knows that the boys do all this crazy shit every day and has absolutely no objects and literally never says anything despite the fact that he could easily tell his wife that Candace is right
some mini collections of tips for writers
(based on things that yours truly notices as a freelance editor. This list is in no way complete, and will probably be added to as I continue to find repeated mistakes)
Dialogue
Use beats in your dialogue to break it up. Even “said” can make a very effective beat between lines.
(No beats: “It’s not lethal. Just highly dangerous with a good chance of being mutilated.” // Beats: “It’s not lethal,” he said. “Just highly dangerous with a good chance of being mutilated.”)
Note how the break allows a bit of a pause for ~dramatic effect
thinking of dialogue, use punctuation and distinct speech patterns! “Life, uh, finds a way.” is an iconic line anyway, but Jeff Goldblum’s signature verbal tic gives it character.
It’s okay if characters stutter. Don’t let the condemnation of stuttering characters as “cringey” in fanfic put you off. (and on that note, fuck cringe culture. Seriously. It saps all the fun out of creativity and fun is important.)
Start! A! New! Line! Whenever! Someone! New! Speaks!!
DO NOT FEAR THE WORD “SAID”
Setting & Blocking
Use the landscape and settings around your character, and always, always remember a scene’s blocking. Where is everything in relation to your characters? Have you left someone holding a coffee cup for the last three scenes? Did you lose a character somewhere along the way?
using the contents of a scene is also great for fight sequences.
Similarly, large character casts are hard to keep track of so don’t be afraid to break them up. Sending someone off somewhere else can create some nifty little subplots.
Keep a personal note of how time passes. Trust me, it’s incredibly helpful to you as a writer and also for future readers.
Characters
Character growth does not have to be positive. Sometimes characters fail or suffer or get their motivations twisted up, and they finish the book as a villain rather than a hero.
All that matters is that a character changes throughout the plot in a way that readers can see; the sort of change they go through is entirely up to you.
scrap the idea that someone has to deserve a redemption arc. They probably don’t deserve it, which is the whole point. So don’t be afraid to make your villains seem completely irredeemable.
and you don’t need to redeem your antagonists in order to make them complex, sympathetic villains, anyway. Sometimes people get so stuck in their beliefs that they can’t see another way and it goes too far. Not everyone comes back from that.
Also, motivations and goals can absolutely change. That’s okay. You just need to have something that drives your character so that your readers are rooting for them.
Protagonists don’t need to be heroic. How you define the protagonists and antagonists in your story is based entirely on the morality in your story-world, NOT the moral ideas in the real world. What counts as a complex protagonist in a world torn apart by biological warfare will be very different than one living in our world.
Prose & Grammar
simple prose is just fine and you don’t need to fluff it up for pretty quotes.
Remember to vary your sentence structures and length. Start smaller and build it up, drawing your reader’s attention.
“And” and “But” are very valid sentence starters that are great for communicating the tone of internal narrative. You’re allowed to tweak grammar if that’s helpful for telling the story, it just needs to be accessible. Test out what you’ve written on other people.
Check that your tenses are consistent!!

Neon lights, brick walls and shit stinking sewers. He sat atop a vacant roof looking over the streets of Chinatown. No one seemed to sleep around here, not even the sewer rats. The spandex dawned superhero munched on his fresh hot pizza, taking a break from his usual scouting.
The brown eyed man nearly chokes on his pepperoni slice seeing a shady man trailing a young woman into an alley. Typical mobbing, but it could lead to something worse.
Pulling down his web patterned mask, cover his chin, he tosses the now empty pizza box down the street. Shooting it with his web, directing the box right into a trash bin.

I'm thinking of posting the fanfic I worked on last summer but I'm having second thoughts. I have trust issues upon witnessing other writers' works being stolen online and it's making me anxious. Any advice, loves?
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has so many good moments but Olivier stabbing a corrupt officer who touches her without consent and then burying him in contrete is still the ultimate power move, just saying.
types of academics
Based on some research associates and professors I know. Tag yourself or your advisor/prof.
old forest goddess: gentle tone of voice, office door is always open, mysterious smiles, will invite you to do field work at the slightest hint of interest, cargo pants with lots of pockets or flowy clothes with hiking boots, receives live frogs in the mail (coos at them and calls them pet names), sporadic communication skills, always has several projects going on.
furrowed brows: extremely serious but cares a lot about the people around them, resting bitch face until they get started talking about their research, extremely wild hair, always willing to help, always wearing a stain-covered lab coat, surprisingly loud laugh,“oh no” is their most common phrase.
fox mulder: always looks vaguely disheveled, always like 5 min late to class, regularly cracks jokes in class but takes material very seriously, smirks during academic arguments, has 5 notebooks running simultaneously (has to flip through all of them to find what they’re looking for), button-ups rolled to the elbow.
shop cat: always at the library, collaborates with may different professors – even across departments, kindest words, oxford shoes and big sweaters, always has a notebook with them for new ideas or drawings, knowing smiles.
cool beans: vaguely bored grad student TA, writes on literally every surface with sharpie to solve problems “because ethanol, guys”, sweet smiles, self depreciating jokes, always ahead of schedule, chaotic good energy, heavy combat boots and floral tattoos.
scramble: literal mad scientist, oddly wholesome, definitely has half the lab in their pockets at all times (some microscope slides, some mouse food, a sharpie, a few eppendorf tubes, and god knows what else), always goes right up to the deadline, not great at delegating but always wants to help others learn new things.
darcy: a little on the blunt side, always reading and analyzing, gives people their full attention, unsure but always moves forwards, actually really appreciates hearing other people’s thoughts on their work, slow to consider new ideas but never discards them without proper thought.
dry ice: vaguely expressionless except for one (1) extremely expressive eyebrow, extremely critical – but only because they want everyone to succeed, a little uptight but very loyal once they warm up, surprises people with their thoughtfulness, has a lot of very weird stories from experiences that seem uncharacteristic for them, sharp work suits with floral accents.
I’m a combo of furrowed brows and fox mulder
Darcy/dry ice
fox mulder/darcy 💖
Time meassured in Robins and Commissioner Gordon’s Hair.
I hate that when I have to study I have to switch off the writer part of me that keeps spewing good potential dialogues while my prof is giving lectures.
I spent the whole summer reading YA novels and I realized that the formula for the male love interest is almost always a smart, half-asian kid whose just honest and sincere with everything he does.
And you know what I found to be unfair?
I'm asian, I live in Asia which is full of asian guys and I have never in the life of me met a guy like that.
