I’m quite sure whoever submited this must be either a Spanish or a Portuguese speaker since none of this ever made it to international media. Which is why, even though myself I’m not longer salty about this, it still pisses me off that no one else knows of it.
First of all, Salvador didn’t like any of the entries, except for Occidentali’s Karma, Blackbird and City Lights, as said by himself.
You can find an article HERE in Portuguese, and HERE in Spanish. I’m not sure which one is the original one and the content seems to differ (of course it does, and both of them are biased in their own way. The Portuguese title says “The sweet Portuguese song who won over pop in Eurovision 2017″, while the Spanish one states “Salvador Sobral, the guy who hated Eurovision” and you thought Spaniards weren’t salty about last place! Ask these guys-), but not the quotes (obviously).
Which translates in: “Television is not my thing” “Eurovision has nothing to do with me. I can’t recall ever watching a single festival. I have a TV in my home, but no remote control. My partner switches it on with a mobile app, so I don’t watch it if she’s not home”.
In both Spanish and Portuguese versions it says “Ele não gostou de nenhuma das canções do festival, com exceção da do italiano Francesco, Occidentali’s Karma” / ”No le gustaba ninguna de las canciones del festival, con la excepción de la del italiano Francesco, Occidentali's Karma”.
Which translates in: “He didn’t like any of the festival’s songs, except for the Italian Occidentali’s Karma”
Then he says “É festivaleira, mas superdivertida, com uma letra inteligente, superirônica. É a única com que me identifico.” / "Es festivalera, pero superdivertida, con una letra inteligente, superirónica; es la única con la que me identifico"
Which translates in: “It’s typical of a festival (idk how to translate the word), but super funny (in Portuguese it seems to translate to “super ironic”). It’s the only one I identify with”.
Back to the “Salvador didn’t like any of the songs” thing (which may come as narcissistic probably, but over all I personaly think it’s a pretty rude thing to say about any opponent in a contest, regardless of being or not being the actual winner).
This is from the press conference back in Lisbon, which I first watched on Spanish TV, but dubbed. I can’t speak Portuguese, but since I’m Spanish myself, I can understand a bit of it.
The video is HERE (14:55)
He was asked about his favourite song, to what he answers that it was the Italian one as it was “the only song that had a message” (a única canção que tinha uma mensagem). Then he talks a bit more about it (”it was satirical, critical with the society...”). Then he adds Belgium (15:19, you can judge the tone he uses yourselves) and Finland. Luisa then says that ‘“mas musicalmente”/ but musically, the Italian...’. I can’t understand exactly what she says, but according to someone in the comments, she disagrees that Occidentali’s Karma is the best song, to which Salvador answers that “it’s not the music per se, but the lyrics” (I didn’t translate this myself, but this person in the comments, though by hearing alone I trust it’s right, but I can’t really write his exact words).
So... yes, Salvador didn’t like Eurovision and still doesn’t. The only song he actually liked was Occidentali’s Karma, and not because it was ‘musically good’, but simply because the lyrics were clever. According to some people translating the video in the comments, he’s also glad that all the fuss about his victory would have ended in two or three months so he would continue making the music he likes.
Did the spanish guys cheat somehow? I saw all the hate they got from their own country lmao
There’s no proof that Manel cheated but he won despite the Spanish people wanting someone else and he ended up last in Eurovision. That’s why he’s been getting all the hate.
Manel didn't cheat, but he won in the national selection despite being 3rd in the televote (with less than half the votes that Mirela -the first one- received, as we knew quite recently since they refused to show numbers before). Two of three juries unexpectedly gave him their max points after the televote so he was in a tie with Mirela. Then the juries were asked to break the tie, so it was only logical for them to give Manel the victory.
Also, Mirela's fans were already behaving horribly and disrespectfully during the whole show, yelling and cheering all the time when it wasn't appropriate, so they raged at Manel and he decided to give them the finger, which wasn't appropriate either.
So, we were already upset that they chose not to respect the public vote, but then there was more. One of the juries who voted for him works in one of the most famous Spanish radio stations (the first one in playing Manel's songs, as he stated) whose website apparently published an article about Manel's victory dated before the show (it's usual that journalists write that kind of things beforehand, but they chose to change the date accordingly once people noticed instead of explaining it). I've also read that he was supporting Manel from the very start, Mirela's team even asked to replace him as a jury because of this, but their petition was denied.
Then we also knew that LeKlein (the 2nd, was the one pre-selected by voting) apparently had her name misspelled for a long time during the televote, invalidating all incorrect sms votes. She also stated that Manel's rehearsals were much longer that the others.
Also, the daughter of the woman responsible for coordinating all the ESC stuff in Spain (and all the entertainment shows in that TV network) seems to work for the record label Manel's in. So... I do believe it's not Manel's fault, but still the whole thing smells fishy.
