What's the difference between headcanon and fanon?

headcanon Used by followers of various media of entertainment, such as television shows, movies, books, etc. to note a particular belief which has not been used in the universe of whatever program or story they follow, but seems to make sense to that particular individual, and as such is adopted as a sort of "personal canon". Headcanon may be upgraded to canon if it is incorporated into the program or story's universe.

A headcanon is a single person's idea.

fanon a term used in fanfiction to describe commonly accepted ideas among authors even if they are not actually expressed in the canon work.

The difference between fanon and headcanon is that Fanon is a non-canon belief/idea held by multiple people, whereas Headcanon is the same thing but it is only held by one person.

Multiple people may have similar headcanons, but they will all be different.

I saw that answer to anon about dean being straight. I was wondering where that gif is from where the writer said he was straight.

I forget where it's from, honestly. I've seen the video where he says the line, but right now I cannot find it. If anyone else knows feel free to add it to this.

Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but could you let me know when it is stated that Dean is heterosexual? Because I can't remember his sexuality being stated at any point, so as far as I'm concerned he could very well be bisexual.

Now that doesn't mean that in fanon you can't have bi!Dean, asexual!Dean, gay!Dean, trans!Dean, objectophile!Dean (as in he's in love with Baby, or pie, etc), whatever you want, but in canon, Dean is straight.

Excuse me, how exactly was John not an abusive father? Don't get me wrong here, I like John as a character, but he was beyond doubt abusive and should never have raised children.

Because of canon.

Canon: Sam and Dean have both stated on numerous occasions that their father wasn't abusive.

Just because you see him as abusive doesn't change the fact that the people who would know if he's abusive or not have stated he wasn't.

If you're gonna talk about a canon abusive father talk about Bobby's father or Crowley, who have both been stated in canon to be abusive.

It is not a matter to discuss or interpret about, because Dean is canonically identified as heterosexual. Ship Dean as whatever you want, but don't forget straight Dean is Canon.

I might be a shipper (Wincest) but I know the difference between canon and fanon. Dean is straight in canon, and while he would do absolutely anything for Sam, while Sam is his world, they aren't involved in canon in a romantic/sexual manner. And that is perfectly okay. I don't need canon Sam/Dean in that way to make me happy, that is what fanfiction is for.

Far too many people (most of them Destiel shippers) refuse to accept that fact. In their eyes just because they want Dean and Castiel to be a couple that that is the case, refusing to accept the many times that Dean has flat out stated that he is straight. They refuse to accept that Jensen has stated that Dean is straight, that the writers and even Eric Kripke have stated that Dean is straight. They think that just because they see things a certain way, that they interpret Dean and Castiel's relationship as non-platonic that that is the case. They believe that just because they think that Dean is bisexual that every little thing is pointing out that fact, when the fact remain that they are wrong.

Headcanons are great, hell I have plenty of my own.

Fanon is an amazing thing.

Doesn't change the fact of what is canon. And canon fact is Dean is straight.

Let's use Dean as an example, shall we?

I will give three statements. Only one of them is the truth.

1) Dean Winchester is bisexual - This is an example of FANON

2) Dean Winchester is straight - This is an example of CANON

3) Dean Winchester sold his body for money to feed himself and Sam - This is an example of HEADCANON

If you said either Number 1 or Number 3 is the truth, you are wrong.
