Mattie and Al’s parents are major hippies but they’re not exactly like the stoner hippies who have no idea what they’re talking about and do LSD anyway. [Note the “not exactly” part.]

Michael [that’s his name] is actually pretty educated, compared to Judy. Judy basically rolls along with what Michael says. He’s basically Kankri in the sense that he never shuts up and he speaks in an educated tone and with a hint of I’m-smarter-than-you doucheiness. It’s ironic, too, because he dropped out of college so some of the bullshit he spews out is kinda parroting what other people have already said. He’s also kind of irresponsible as a parent. He’s kinda shit at fathering. I mean it’s not like he’s a major jerk or anything he’s just…more of a professor to the kids rather than a father. If that makes sense.))
