Guess who’s back, back again?

That’s right, it’s Near, returning to the Taskforce at last, to great expectations... kinda.

As you’ll see, the return wasn’t quite as exciting and flashy as perhaps Near hoped it would be. Therefore, it didn’t feel right to do another “Without Me” parody. So, instead you can have this melancholy song. This is a parody of “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard. Funnily enough, very few things had to be changed for this number. That’s always nice when it happens. But ohhhhh Near. So naive.

The Place They Go is Mu, but....

Mu is not a place.  

So this is one of my favorite points about Death Note and I’m just going to ramble about it because this just makes me really happy.

In HTR13, Ohba states that he chose to end Death Note in 108 chapters because the number 108 is significant in Zen Buddhism. This is actually not the only place where Ohba derived inspiration from Zen Buddhism; the concept of “Mu” (無) is derived from it as well.

無 was translated as “nothingness,” which in the context of Zen Buddhism requires a bit of an explanation. In Zen the word is not used to indicate a physical place. “Nothingness” is also potentially confusing as a translation because it can be used to describe Limbo or Purgatory, neither of which are what “mu” in really getting at.

Announcing the conclusion to the Mixtape of 21 Chump Street parodies. It’s been months since the first one was released, so I am pleased to give you: the Epilogue!

With Mikami’s trial happening tomorrow, this seemed a fitting time for a conclusion. I’d like to note that this is very condensed: Mikami won’t actually be testifying against Luna in this trial (although he will later), despite this song saying that he does. Still, it sums up the escape arc nicely.

[MIKAMI] And when I told on Akagami she could not deny.

[GUARDS] What? He testified? Another Kira verified? What? Teru, say goodbye to Luna, they got you.

[JUNICHI] Kira’s got to face consequences. I don’t want to go too much into it, but this case hits really close to home for me. I saw the effects of Kira’s actions and his reign of terror.

[NARRATOR] On people you knew?

[JUNICHI] Yes. I saw what it did to people. That’s all I want to say about it.

[NARRATOR] Do you wish someone like you had done this type of work?

[JUNICHI] Yes. And I hope someone like me keeps doing it. Still, there are ones you remember, the ones that you think about after they’re gone.

[NARRATOR] During the time he spent on death row, Mikami couldn't help but think about Junichi.

[MIKAMI] He was a kind-hearted, Japanese patrol guard, thoughtful, mature, and a Kira supporter. That's not the only reason I trusted him, though. Listen, if you were in my place and the only Kira supporter came up to you and said they’d help, wouldn’t you agree? Most of the other guards weren’t even nice to me, of course I didn’t trust them. It’s cause it was him.

[NARRATOR] Have you talked to him since all of this happened?

[MIKAMI] Yeah. That was a great conversation.

[NARRATOR] What did you say?

[MIKAMI] I said, what the heck did you do? What the heck did you do? Junichi… What the heck did you do?

Q: What is going on?

A: The Death Note fandom is having a Cosplay Celebration!

Q: How do I participate?

A: You can participate in many ways! You can post new photos of yourself in cosplay. You can reblog/repost your old cosplay photos. You can do a closet/casual cosplay. You can do a wild AU cosplay. You can take cosplay photos in cool places. Whatever you can imagine, you can do it! I’ll also post “Challenge” themes for each day; if you want, you can participate in those as well!

Q: Do I have to only post my Death Note cosplays?

A: This is a Death Note fandom event, so I will only be reblogging Death Note cosplays. However, if you would like to feature your other cosplays alongside your Death Note ones, that’s fine. Just make sure your Death Note cosplays are the priority for this event. If the Death Note Cosplay Celebration goes well, I may start hosting Cosplay Celebrations for other fandoms too!

Q: What if I don’t have a cosplay? What if I’m not comfortable posting photos of myself?

A: Do you have stuffed animals or pets? Let them cosplay for you! Or, go online and make a collage of potential cosplay items that you would like to own. Reblog other people’s cosplays, and spread the word throughout the fandom! You can be a big part of this event, even if you don’t want to participate on the cosplay side of things. :)

Q: What can we expect from the “Challenges”?

A: I’m still debating how to design the challenges, but they’ll probably be pretty basic! Themes like “Flowers” or “Animals” could be interpreted as characters in flower crowns or flower gardens, or characters interacting with animals or with animal attributes (like ears & tail). Other challenge ideas could be “Go to the local coffee shop and order a drink in your cosplay, using your character’s name” or “Take a cosplay photo near a body of water” or “Put your character someplace your character would never go.”

Q: Do we have to participate in the “Challenges”?

A: Nope! They’re just extra fun. :D This event is all about enjoying this amazing fandom and the characters within it. The challenges are meant to help spark creativity; they are not required, and there will be no prizes or awards for those who participate in them.

Q: Do I have to do each Challenge on the day it is released?

A: Only if you want to! You can do any of the challenges whenever you want throughout the week. If you want to post your Challenge photo on the day the Challenge is released, go for it! If you want to post all your Challenges on the last day of the Cosplay Celebration, go for it! 

Q: How do I make sure you see my contributions?

A: Tag @dncosplaycelebration or use #DNCosplayCelebration in your post! I will be sure to check both in order to reblog all your amazing cosplays. You can also Submit posts - just make sure all Submissions are your own! okay so a few of us were talking about a hypothetical future in @thetaskforce Verse like “10 years on” I’m so invested in this future “AU” of the verse?! because so much changes theoretically, and I just have to share some HCs and plot ideas we’ve had for it because AHHHH.  

Within the next year in the current timeline, @yourjusticelawliet leaves for Russia after he gets a lead on his parents. The one case he’s never been able to solve: what happened to them. He drops everything to go there. 

He actually finds answers relatively quickly - within a few months - but doesn’t return to Japan. 

In fact, he practically abandons the Taskforce and slips off the radar totally. 

L will spend the next eight years completely in the shadows travelling under different personas and escaping the problems he created at TFHQ. He’s no longer “L”. 

L takes on the name “Grisha Yurovetsky”, using his mother’s maiden name as his surname. 

Janus takes over officially as the new L.  (*cheers*) 

Matsuda leaves the Taskforce, refusing to let L’s disappearance get him down. He rejoins the NPA as a police officer. 

Teru Mikami and Light Yagami are still in the new L’s custody for their crimes as Kiras at TFHQ, and are doing a little better.

Light’s family have been told that he is dead due to a complication in a case, in order to keep his imprisonment more low profile. 

Georgie Trotter is arrested and found guilty for murder, after details of the investigation concerning a murder he committed come out publicly. Mikami, who bonded with Trotter during his imprisonment in Interpol (currently going on now) is distraught. 

With supervision, Mikami is granted permission to visit Trotter. 

Sayu Yagami has come of age to apply for the NPA. 

Mischa and Janus are still together :3 buT….well: 

There was a protest formed against the new L, and in order to protect Janus, Mischa Keehl took the fall and is in prison serving a sentence. 

Due to @yourjusticelawliet‘s actions many years ago as L, the current L still has problems with Interpol which means the situation is more complex than it needs to be. 

L discovers that Mischa is in prison and goes to visit her 8 years on. She has a few years left of her sentence. 

In his visit, Mischa tells L that Mello has passed away. She implores him to stay in Japan.

L considers getting an apartment, but insists Janus can never know he was here talking to Mischa, or is in Japan. He refuses to go near TFHQ. 

L doesn’t handle this news of Mello’s death very well, and Grisha causes a bit of a scene at a bar. 

MATSUDA is the police officer that arrests him and puts him in a cell overnight. Matsuda has no idea at the time it’s L. It’s been 8 years, after all.

we RP’d some of the 10 years on stuff for fun and omfg it’s so funny with L+ Matsu but so much of it is poignant and intense. It’s so taskforce verse I cry.

This parody is set a few months ago when Near @thatwasanearthing rightfully roasted @yourjusticelawliet for his lack of progress on the Carver case (since August 2015…L), and suggested instead of trying to figure out who murdered Carver, find evidence for Janus ( @adventus-agonalia ) NOT being the murderer to get her out on reasonable doubt. He has to find a chip in the casefile…

alSO I just thought it hilarious that NEAR is the one roasting L and calling him out for his bullshit (it did actually happen and it was amazing and salty. I truly believe near can put anyone through their paces, i mean he made light yagami stutter.)

L: Greatest detective I think you’ll find, actually! I- Near: -I got chosen and trained to be you I can do all the things that you do So excuse me, but this surely can’t be L?!! 

L:  I’m doing all that I can. Just because you’ve found some kind of chip in the casefile…

Near: You know what? You’re right. There’s a chip in the casefile And it’s been there a while With the case being open For almost a year -

L: If you allow me to explain- Near: -don’t you start!  There’s so much frustration With the time that you’re wasting   Yes - there’s a chip in the casefile You might wanna look over it…

For those of you who may be unaware, a year has passed since I made this database.

Now before I go any further, it is worth acknowledging that I am not one to usually mark dates, even significant ones close to me. Let alone publicly. But I do believe it is necessary to do so here. For opening my database has led to many unexpected things. Things that have - I see no need in pretending -changed the very nature of my existence. 

A lot of things have changed, though that is the way of this world. Change, for better or worse, is simply something that happens. Irrespective of whether we truly want it to.

And by creating this database, as aforementioned, many things have changed. By doing so, I become more accessible to the public, and the World’s Greatest Detective no longer keeps themselves completely in the shadows. Although I continue to keep myself guarded, and there are things the world never should and never can know about me or many things, the creation of this database has given me exposure I never expected to readily accept.

This time last year, I was watching. You see from the shadows, I watched Izzy-San pose as me on my behalf, and work with Taskforce members in solving the Anon-Kun case. As it unfolded, the case was a reminder that there are puzzles everywhere. It encouraged me to step a fraction out of the shadows, and shortly after the closure of the case I made my introductory address.

However, it didn’t take long for criminals to come forwards, eager to catch my attention. Some of them really thought they could defeat me… hm.

But with the challengers and criminals, came the Taskforce. Not like any other I have been a part of in my entire career. I mean the Taskforce did not disassemble itself after the task had been completed. I admit, parts of me had expected once the cases were solved, once the answers had been found, that the Taskforce would go about their usual business. Or that I would leave Japan, and continue working elsewhere. The itch the leave waned a little…

Throughout the course of 2015 our fates were inevitably chained together. And nobody could have predicted such a thing. Even me. After all, I am a creature of solitude, that I cannot deny. I never thought I would have people like this again. 

People I have learnt to grow with and even come to care quite deeply for.

I say it rarely, but members of my Taskforce are a collection of the world’s most remarkable minds. They are fiercely intelligent and loyal to me. And I do believe that whatever else may happen, Taskforce HQ will continue to be a symbol. It’s not always good. It’s not always pleasant. There are things I do not wish to share here, nor could I, but perhaps sharing my gratitude and sincere congratulations will be enough.

So thank you. Taskforce, associates, and members of the public.

And to those who are listening who may be scheming, because I am not so foolish to believe you’re not out there: try your best. Challengers, I’m always intrigued to see what you have to offer. There have been many wonderful and astounding cases.

Criminals, well. Those of you with ulterior motives to overthrow me or something of that sort, don’t think I will allow you to continue for much longer. I will catch you, we will foil your plans. Believe me. 

With my Taskforce, over thirty cases have been solved, and as L, I have solved countless more.

We’re closing in. This is where it always begins…
