Newsies + Yesterday’s Print
vaudeviillian // miss medda .
her arms fold across her chest. ❝ jack kelly, y’better have a good reason for skippin’ school and gettin’ arrested. ❞ out of all the troubled kids she has fostered, he’s definitely the most troubled out of them all. despite her current demeanor, medda cares deeply about him as he is also the oldest case she has taken —but his constant run-ins with the cops are tiresome to the performer.
@capnnjack
he shoulders his backpack, newly collected from the police desk. he gives the inside a cursory glance, making sure his charcoals and papers are still inside. nothing else really matters. ❝ had to take care of some stuff, that’s all. ❞ doesn’t really explain away the ‘arresting’ part of the day or miss medda’s questioning; he respects the hell out of this foster mother, but nobody ever cares about his real explanations.
What didn’t kill me gave me an immense amount of trauma
Can you?
I can’t
anastcsie // anya .
“ …. so you’re saying that there could be a job involved in all of this ? well, now i’m listening ! ” she’s teasing of course, made evident by the smirk on her face. she sticks her hand out, unusually callused for a girl her age, but the smirk remains. “ my name is anya. your offer is accepted and appreciated. my mother said not to accept offers of shelter from people you don’t know the name of. that is, she probably would of if i had one. ”
he laughs, taking her proffered hand in his. ❝ a smart girl, huh? smart girls do well ‘round this city. the name’s jack kelly. ❞ ain’t nothing unusual, hearing a body ain’t got folks. most of the kids running and working in the manhattan streets and businesses, papers and factories, are skinny orphans. and there’s lots of them that don’t even know who their parents are or were. ❝ you come on with me back to the newsie house, and we’ll getcha figured out and safe. ❞
madepossible // ella .
her eyes immediately flash to jack at the mention of him saving his money. while the idea of finally escaping madame sounded like her wildest dreams come true, she could never let jack spend that sort of money on her. he’s earned it & she could never make him give that up for her. ❝ you-you really want me to come with you ? ❞ of all people, why her ? ella can’t quite wrap her head around it, but he squeezes her hand & the warmth is more than ella has felt in such a long time. ❝ i-i could never let you spend money you have worked for on me. that isn’t fair. ❞
❝ why not? my money, ain’t it? ❞ his grin widens, and his eyes spark with the glee that can only come from his dreams and plans of far-off places and western vistas. ❝ ‘course you’ll come with me! me and youse and crutchie gonna take off and see the west and live the way we’s meant to live. ❞ he don’t like seeing kids in rotten situations in the city; and even though ella ain’t really a kid, she’s got more rotten in her life than most rotten bodies got a right to have. and with her being so sweet and smart and sensitive? all he wants to do is wrap her up and take her away.
he doesn’t have words. he falls into miss medda’s arms as soon as he staggers into the theater, sneaking through the back entrance, hiding as the last of the actors and dancers leave. and there ain’t no hiding how much he’s been crying.
@vaudeviillian // starter call ; open .
jackie speaks. here’s a fresh STARTER CALL for you mutuals!!
madepossible // ella .
ella has to admit she’s getting caught up in the idea of really making it out of here. her cheeks flush a bright red as her laugh only becomes more bright, enlightening the air around them. ❝ it is quite a thought, jack. ❞ a concept ella can’t truly wrap her mind around. a life away from her step-mother never seemed possible for her. at least, not any time soon. ❝ but how do you suppose we’ll get there ? train tickets cost money. something neither of us really have a lot of. ❞
❝ says you! i been savin’ goin’ on two years now. ❞ the cache gets depleted every winter, every time one of the fellas takes sick, every time one of the little boys comes up low on rent for their stay in the lodging house. but he can do it. he knows he can, if he can just catch a break. ❝ i’ll get us both out there, if youse’ll come with me! ❞ he grins, placing a gentle hand over hers and squeezing it with his calloused, dirty palm. he’s got city-boy written all over him, in the ink embedded into his skin and the skimpy rattiness and filth of his smoggy clothes. but he ain’t meant for this place.
freedomspelled // race .
“you ain’t see me laughing, do ‘ya, kelly?” race answers, dripping from head to toe, but a hint of a laugh at the edge of his mouth and below his annoyed eyes. ( though he would never give jack the satisfaction of letting it show ).
he ruffles race’s hair. ❝ you ain’t got the sense of humor you need ‘round this place, kid! ❞ the fellas are playful most days, making the best of their limited resources and hardworking days, culminating in a fun and loud lodging house. ❝ ‘sides, you’s starting to smell kinda ripe. ❞
asortofsensation // madeline .
“I think it’s pretty even when we’re not on the roof,” Madeline mused, looking over the roof’s edge at the city below, living and breathing despite the darkness of the night, “Though that’s coming from someone who has barely seen New York at all.”
❝ the city buildings and parks ain’t so bad, i guess. ❞ he’s grown up on them streets, been more raised by them than most anybody else, even his ma and da. so they ain’t so pretty to him. ❝ up high’s where everything looks the best though. ❞ you can’t see the grime and smog when you’re up high.
anastcsie // street girl .
well, the offer certainly was enticing, to say the least. having nowhere that was safe was an understatement if she had ever heard one. being new to the city hadn’t been easy for her, but she had suffered through it with her street-sweeping, as meager of a pay that it gave her. “ i thought that they didn’t allow girls to be newsies, or even stay with the other boys. unless i’ve hear wrong… ? ”
❝ any folks who tells you that don’t know what they’s talkin’ about. there ain’t no manhattan girl newsies, but that don’t mean there can’t be. ❞ he shrugs. ❝ none o’ the fellas back at the lodging house is gonna care if you turn up tonight. but you let me worry about all that though if you want a place to stay. ❞
❝ the city looks different from up here, don’t it? cleaner, nicer — almost pretty, huh? ❞
@asortofsensation // starter call ; open .
❝ damn reporters. don’t they know this same story ain’t sellin’ no mores? ❞ jack’s and the rest of the newsies’ lying, sugary tongues are the only reasons any papes are getting bought.
@frxncaise // starter call ; open .
anastcsie // street girl .
“ i… no. “ she hates even admitting it – she was hoping to have at least had some sort of temporary lodging by this point, but that just wasn’t the case. “ what is it to you ? ”
he shrugs, hands in pockets. ❝ hey, you got the rights to freeze if ya want. but there’s room at the newsies’ lodging house, if you ain’t got nowheres else that’s safe. ❞
madepossible // ella .
❝ i have… ❞ she has thought about leaving many times before, but where else would she go ? outside of her home, she has nothing else. no money, no family. ella realized many years ago that even though her situation is not ideal, she is better off where she is. but jack’s question makes her pause, her gaze going from her hands to him. ❝ you really think we could ? ❞ she hardly takes the thought seriously as a laugh bubbles from within her chest.
❝ for sure! ❞ ella’s laugh makes him smile a bit more, as does her sadness. he’s always encouraged to be better, more positive, stronger, by those around him when they’re upset. ❝ there’s a life out there, way out west, that’s just waitin’ for me and you. lots o’ things we can do out there! ❞ ways and places where even they, who’ve been handed some of the worst life’s got to offer, can be happy and whole and safe.
