“Yeah, a Rochette got me this year. Elise or something like that. They always have high bids, but I’ve never actually talked to any of them. Who’d you end up with?”
“I suppose that’ll be interesting then?”
“I’m with Hazel. Yay me...”
“Have you stopped at the bar yet? Because I have to say, the new wine from Babineaux is fantastic. And absolutely worth spending more money on top of what you’ve probably already spent on donations tonight.”
“Already a step ahead of you, love. And it truly is fantastic.”
“Listen. The only reason I’m doing this is because Cris forced me too and it would look really bad if the entire team did it, but not the captain, alright?”
“Exactly, and I doubt she had got rid of absolutely all the books she liked when she was Owen’s age, even if they are a little young for her to still read now. She is. She has babysat a bit and Owen adores her. It has been a while since I got to actually see her play, but I know she is hoping to make the main team for Slytherin this year.”
“That’s cute. Yeah, she’s so nervous, but honestly they’d be mad not to have her on the team.”
“I find it so interesting how your team is packed with kids, and yet ours doesn’t have any.”
“You know how muggle’s have that quote ‘All the world’s a stage’? Well, all the world’s a fashion show, at least when the paparazzi are around.”
“I’m free. What moves are they?”
Em shrugged. “What the paparazzi thinks doesn’t bother me.”
“Good. I think they’re called ‘The Dragon,’ ‘Mac ‘N Cheese,’ and ‘Downward Dog.’ Don’t ask me about the names - I know they’re ridiculous.”
“Yeah, I’d bet on you three. If gambling on my patients wasn’t completely unprofessional, that is. Don’t want to be accused of sabotaging anyone, or anything.”
“No, no, of course not.”
“We really must stop thinking of things that could get us fired.”
“There are about six years between them, yes, but that is not to say that she might not have some she liked when she was younger and has now finished with. So it is still a good idea, because I only know which wizarding books are suitable for him.”
“You know Lynx well?”
“Oh, yeah, that’s probably true. She must. That girl practically flies through books. Pyxis can hardly keep up with her.”
“Yeah, yeah, kinda. Pyxis and I hang out a fair bit, and Lynx is part of that package. She’s an absolute sweetheart, and brilliant at Quidditch.”
“Hmm, it probably would. I’ll put it on the pile.”
“Well, when you’re playing in black and grey half the time, you might as well spice it up in practice.”
“I suppose you’re right, but it’s not as if anyone’s going to see us. It’s just practice, not a fashion show.”
“Speaking of practice, are you free Thursday evening for a practice - just you, Tas, and Benny? I found these new moves that I think we should try and incorporate into our strategy.”
“Yeah, let’s both try to keep our jobs.”
“Oh, so busy. I’ve got quite a few newbies this year, plus all my regulars, yourself included. It’s great, though - things were a bit slow last year, but that’s definitely not the case this time around. What about you? How’s the team doing?”
“Well, that’s good in a manner of speaking, isn’t it?”
“Oh, yes, the team’s great. A few rivalries, but I suppose that can’t be helped, unfortunately. We’re doing fairly well. Cris thinks we’ll be in the finals, which would be great, but I suppose we’ll see. Goldstein’s doing insufferably well this year with the Harpies, and Pyxis and the Bats aren’t doing poorly. I think it’ll be us three in the semis, but it’s never definite of course.”
“She’s like a shark. Smells blood as soon as it hits the water…or the skies in this case.”
“Merlin, I know, Tas. She’s the worst out of them. At least there are others.”
“Uh…”
“I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“So, you totally wouldn’t mind me calling in a Healer to check your vitals and blood content, right? Because I can do that in instants and I swear, if there’s anything off, I will make sure you’ll never set eyes on a broom again.”
“Merlin, Dawlish, I did not fight as hard as I did to get you and have you show up like this, alright? I’m on your side, but if you don’t show commitment, I will replace you, and we both know that Cris would do it without a second thought. Hundreds, thousands even, want your position, so show some damn respect to me and the team, and get your ass in line.”
“I will have to do that. If you think he’s not going to try to kill me or something.”
“If he kills you, I’ll kill him, and then Cris’ll kill me, and then Pyxis or Tas’ll kill Cris. And then it’s an everlasting cycle of murder, which we don’t want. So, I sure as hell hope not.”
“If you’re really that worried, I’ll come and chaperone you two.”
Pyxis couldn’t help the part of him that instinctively filed away Em’s admission about her Beaters not quite getting along. Will was difficult and they both knew it – Woodcroft had only worked well with him because he was as strong a personality as Will was, Pyxis was sure – but perhaps he was making an effort after all. Especially if Em felt they were starting to get somewhere.
He let the topic turn, though, as Lynx let out a laugh at Em’s apology and waved a hand. “All dad ever talks about is Quidditch, I’m totally used to it,” she joked in return, nudging her father’s side.
Pyxis chuckled in response, and nudged her back, before raising an eyebrow with an amused grin at Em’s seeming excitement over her shared fact. “I haven’t,” he admitted. “I’ve had my head in the proverbial sand this past few months, I swear. What’s happening with that now?”
Lynx rolled her eyes, albeit affectionately, at Pyxis’s lack of knowledge, shaking her head slightly. “You would miss your own funeral if it came during Quidditch season, da,” she chastised, and then focused back on Em again with an eager grin of her own.
“It’s kind of cool, innit? I don’t know why they’re migrating, but we talked about the new ones showing up in the area right before classes ended. I just want to see the new ones, really. I know it’s dangerous and all, but they look so pretty.”
Em laughed at the banter between Pyxis and Lynx. They were too cute. “Oh, he would, definitely. And of course you have, it’s only been on the front page for the past three weeks.”
“I know, they’re gorgeous. You know, Lynx, I once saw a dragon hatch.” she said, the comment dangerously close to the truth. In fact, she’d seen more dragons hatch than she could remember.
“Experts are fairly confused about why it’s happening. I mean, the Opaleye is native to Australia and New Zealand, and yet their migrating up towards Europe,” Em said, locking and unlocking her fingers, hoping that her interest wasn’t misinterpreted too much, “Honestly, they’ve had to obliviate so many muggles because of it. After all, it’s kind of hard to try and convince them that the dragons they saw were airplanes.”
All The Same | Hazel + Em
Hazel knew as well as anyone did that the Quidditcher she’d won a day with wouldn’t really want to spend the day with her. Save for the minimal chance that she had won Bevin’s attention for the day, of course, she could hardly think of an ally that she had in the Quidditch world. She always made large donations despite that fact, though, and while she rarely anticipated being the top bidder, she did enjoy those occasions when she could be. And this year’s donation had been particularly high compared to her norm.
She intended to enjoy her day despite the likely dissatisfaction of her partner, however. Though Em was not one of those that seemed to dislike Hazel most, the writer was completely aware that she wasn’t in the woman’s favor either. And how could she be, with her focus on the personal lives of not only her team, but Em herself, on a regular basis? She could easily have let the donation stand for itself and not bothered spending the day with the other woman as she’d been promised, though.
But Hazel wanted that day.
It was shallow, she knew, but she wanted someone to play friendly, even if it was only because she’d paid for their company. At times, being the enemy of everyone that you wrote about was tiring and lonely, after all. And so, with the pretty sundress she’d bought a few weeks ago hanging a little looser on her figure than she would have liked, Hazel entered the coffee shop she’d agreed to meet Em at to start their day at noon, going to the counter to order her usual drink before taking up a seat near the window, where she would see the other girl’s arrival. Assuming, of course, that Em arrived. Hazel could hardly blame her if she blew her off, after all.
When she’d found out that she’d been paired up with Hazel, Em had half a mind to blow it off. But she knew that would make her look extremely bad, and really, how bad could it be? It was only one day. And if it got extreme, she could always just leave and feign she had something else to do.
That didn’t mean she was going to be happy about it, though. Hands shoved into her pockets and disgruntled look plastered on her face, she walked into the coffee shop, and after spotting Hazel, went over to the counter to order her coffee, hoping it would make her semi-human.
Receiving her order, she walked over and slumped into the seat in front of Hazel, sipping her coffee. She could feel the caffeine absorbing into her, and it made her start to feel more awake.
“Morning,” she grumbled to the reporter. Hazel looked too put together, too primped and ready, while Em looked like she’d just rolled out of bed, which admittedly she had.
Interesting, that James was adjusting, at least, but seemed off. Pyxis wondered briefly if that was just the new pressure of being on the top team in the League, if Davidson’s particular brand of difficulty was at hand, or if there was something else going on. Something else that Morgan had covered up during their time together on the team. He would have to keep watching; he certainly couldn’t ask Dylan without it seeming too invasive and, undoubtedly, dragging up unwanted memories.
“He might settle in better once you’re more friendly with him,” Pyxis mused, rather than voicing his earlier thoughts. “He was a Kestrel so long that it’s probably odd being in Montrose now. Total uprooting and all.” He offered a slight shrug with that. “Besides, we all know how difficult your other Beater can be. I wouldn’t doubt that he’s at least a little part of the difficulty.”
Or perhaps that was just Pyxis and the lingering tweak in his shoulder that had come at the hand of one of Will’s rather impressive shots. “Morgan’s getting there. Personal life’s been rough, so that’s coming out on field of course, but not as much as it could, at least. He’s… adapting. I think once he’s better settled, that’ll be easier, he’s just not used to someone that doesn’t practically know what he’s thinking most of the time.”
Em raised her eyebrows in silent agreement, “Well, I’ve at least been trying to get them to get along. It’s... getting there.”
She probably shouldn’t have told Pyxis that particular detail, but it wasn’t exactly impacting their game play, so she figured it really didn’t matter.
“Well, it doesn’t seem to have impacted your game play much, so I’m sure it’ll work out. Hopefully, you’ll have him around for a while, and time will certainly improve your communication.” she said, looking sadly at the small amount of ice cream remaining.
“I hope we’re not boring you with our Quidditch talk, Lynx. Although I’m sure you’re used to it after all this time. We should switch subjects, this is a time for all of us to ignore the craziness of our teams.”
“Did you guys hear about the giant dragon migration that’s happening right now?” Em said grinning eagerly.
“I wouldn’t buy that, if I were you. It’s not your colour.”
“Hm? You’re right. That one would look pretty on you though, love.”
“Who knew finding new practice robes was so much work?”
“Agreed. Can’t let the fans see the inner turmoil of the reigning champions can we?”
“Oh, definitely not. Cris might just explode, and Hazel, dear Hazel might just feel like she’s actually uncovered something very juicy. And we can’t have either of those happening.”
