“That sounds like a dare.” Tony says as he clicks his fingers in a snap. “Hit it JARVIS.” Music starts to play and he gently pulls Steve closer. One hand rests on Steve’s hip and other interlocks with Steve’s. “Ready? Good.” He doesn’t wait for a reply before he starts to lead them in a dance.

Being this close to Tony again was familiar and it felt good, like coming home. He gripped tightly at Tony almost as if he was scared to let go. Their gentle swaying was relaxing and the tenderness of the moment was breathtaking. Steve couldn’t help but look at Tony’s face with pure admiration and love.

Tony hid a smirk. “Yeah. I also learned the Charleston. Bucky knows all your best moves and he was eager to share.” Standing up he holds his hand out. “I’ll ask properly. Because I’m smooth like that. May I have this dance, Mr. Rogers?” 

Steve rolls his eyes but can’t fight the blush rolling down his neck. He takes Tony’s hand and stands up to his proper hight of towering over Tony. He smirks and can’t take his eyes off of Tony. “Show me what you got.”

Tony frowns at that. “I was just asking because -” He bites his lip for a second as he debates about phase two of his wooing of Steve. “I learned how to dance and I wanted to know if you wanted to dance. But, ah, thank you for the compliment?”

Steve froze at Tony’s words before tossing his head back into a full laugh. “You learned how to dance?” The thought of it was hilarious to Steve, but only because he knew how clumsy Tony was before. Realizing how his laughter might be taken he quickly puts himself back together and looks at Tony with pure adoration. “I would love to dance with you, Tony.”

Tony rests his chin on his hand. “I’m just saying if I was dead you could move onto that. But the rumors of my death were greatly exaggerated.” He wonders who spread them and what the total story is but right now it’s not important. He glances at Steve’s plate. “Are you done?” 

Steve starts to blush at how rude he’s been and how much food he’s just consumed. “Yes I am, thank you so much for cooking, it tasted incredible.” Took him long enough to say it.

Tony sits upright and stares at Steve during his explanation. He can’t find the words to say anything eloquent so all he utters is “Well starving yourself and lack of sleep would lead to death eventually. It’d just be slow.” He trails off and falls silent. He’s never meant so much to someone- or he’s never felt like he has. 

Finally he slumps back in his seat. “Yeah. I want you to live. Would want you to move on and find someone new. Maybe get that apple pie life you deserve, you know? But I hate that you lost sleep because of me.” 

Steve looks at Tony like he’d grown another head. “You think I’d sleep just fine with you missing? Tony, if we had a fight and didn’t stay in the same bed I wouldn’t sleep, let alone with rumors of you being dead.” He’d given up on regaining his appetite, he ate enough for now. “And I don’t want apple pie. You know that. I want you. Even if for some insane reason I had to move on, I can’t imagine it would be with someone normal. I probably have a type.” No one would match that type as much as Tony of course. Tony was his type.

Tony tries to hide a smirk. “I guess I can be either.” He agrees. “And I’m cooking to feed you. You need it the way you’re consuming food like a starving man.” He sighs and looks away. “I didn’t want you to lose yourself Steve. You can’t do this to yourself.”

Steve slowed down at Tony’s words, feeling anger and sadness and fear bubbling up in him all at once before he finished chewing and swallowed. He set his fork and knife down buying time to think about what he wanted to say. “When I came here, to the future, I had nothing. Literally and fugitively. I had only what was in my bag and everyone had grown old and died. I was floating. Lost at sea. I would rather be lost in space then lost at sea.” He was getting off topic. “Tony, before I met you I was borderline suicidal.” He shook his head and huffed a laugh. “Maybe a bit more then borderline. I had literally no one and I was living in this world that was so strange and scary and it didn’t know me as much as I didn’t know it. Then you came bouncing into my life and it stopped being so bad and I stopped wanted to be dead. Before I met you, I was eating and sleeping for long hours at a time. I was healthy. When you disappeared, I may have stopped eating. Stopped sleeping. But I never wanted to die. Because even if you had died, or if you had left me, there was this part of me that knew you would want me to live.” Steve shrugged and picked his knife and fork back up and started eating again. “So I might have lost myself, but at least it was more in then woods then at sea.”

Tony just nods before resting his head on his arms to watch Steve. “I hope it’s good.” He says absently. He takes a piece of garlic bread to chew on. “I guess this makes me your wife. I’ll be cooking all the time now.”

“Why be my wife when you can be my husband.” Steve responds between bites. It was nice to say. “And why are you cooking all the time now?” He glanced at Tony before shoving an entire piece of chicken into his mouth.

“Things I can’t burn too easily. Chicken Alfredo and spaghetti. With garlic bread. So you have options.” He motions to the dishes. “And there’s dessert.” He pushes the two bowls towards Steve. “Consume.”

Steve smiled and grabbed a fork and knife. “Thank you, Tony.” He wanted to be polite before he absolutly devoured his food. He hadn’t been eating that well, and after the first bite he realized just how hungry he really was. Before he knew it he was filling his plate again.

Slowly Tony opens his eyes as he catches his breath. “Yeah. And you need to eat.” He reluctantly pulls away and moves to sit on the left of Steve. He could sit across the table but he wants to be close. “I expect you to have thirds if not fifths.”

Steve felt a smile pull at his lips as Tony sat beside him. “You know me, I always eat a lot.” He hadn’t lately, but those were more extenuating cicumstaces. “What’s on the menu chef?”

Tony tries not to tremble at the softness of the touch paired with the kiss. He’d almost lost this forever. All because of his grief and desperation for his mother back. And though he couldn’t remember how long he had lost Steve, he knew it was more than it ever should have been. He feels the burn of tears and forces them back. He has Steve now. He has Pepper and JARVIS and DUM-E. Everyone was still with him.

Steve wanted to keep kissing Tony. He wanted to sink to his knees right there and worship him like he never had before. But. Tony made plans. He eventually pulled his lips away but kept his forehead pressed against Tony’s. “If we keep kissing like this I don’t think I’ll be able to stop for a good while.”

Tony searches Steve for any sign of doubt before smiling softly. “You never have to ask.” He returns before he closes the distance between them. It just feels like home. Like they fit.

Steve melts into the kiss, raising a hand to cup Tony’s jaw and hold him close like he needed more, and like Tony was fragile and could disappear at any second. The thought that he did made him deepen the kiss quickly and became desperate for everything Tony would give him. He hadn’t been close like this with anyone is so long, but he hadn’t been close like this with Tony in so long. He should’ve known that once he started kissing Tony, he wouldn’t want to stop.

Tony just sighs at Steve’s words. “Probably not the best home to have. Look what I did to you.” But selfishly he can’t let go. He rurns his head to press his lips to Steve’s unshaven jaw. “You can let it down now. Relax, Steve.”

Steve disagrees but says nothing. He’ll have all the time in the world to convince Tony he was the best thing that has ever happened to him. He feels his body relax more at the tender gesture from Tony and he nods at the words. Then nods again. He lets out a breath and turns his head so that his and Tony’s lips are inches apart. He wants to kiss him, more than he ever has, but he’s unsure if he’s allowed. “Can I kiss you?”

Tony doesn’t move away after Steve takes a seat; relishing in the hand touching his. Steve’s words cause him to swallow hard and in a rare show of emotion, he drapes himeself over the back of Steve’s chair as his arms encircle Steve in a hug. His chin rests on Steve’s shoulder and he just exhales softly and stays there for a moment. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Steve leans his head against Tony’s and keeps his eyes closed. “You’re my home, Tony.” He was probably being a downer, they should be celebrating or trying to figure out what happened, but Steve was so tired and he just wanted to rest. “I feel like I can’t let my guard down with anyone else. You’re the only person I can be vulnerable with.”

“Well its time to change that.” He motions to the table as he walks over- pulling out the chair for Steve. “I’m going to make sure you take care of yourself before I end up being hunted by your fan club.” He pauses and ducks his head in shame. “I’m sorry. I hate being wrong but I hate the fact I was gone so long even more.”

Steve just stares at Tony for a second. Happy to be able to do that before realizing how rude it was. The corner of his mouth upticked and he went to sit in the chair Tony pulled out. He reached out to rest his hand over Tony’s on the back of the chair. “I just want you to stay with me now.” He leaned his head back to lean against Tony behind him. “I just-” He closed his eyes.

Lucifer let out a low whistle. He’d heard something about that, but being in prison prevented him from keeping up with current news. “I missed that news bulletin. Well, welcome to the future. You’ve probably been here long enough to figure out if it’s better or worse than when you’re from.” Mentally Lucifer tried to puzzle through how it could have happened. A time-turner experiment gone wrong? Some kind of stasis spell? Prolonged petrification? 

That struck Steve a bit... odd. Where could Lucifer have been that prevented him from hearing about it? Reading about it? The story was front page news for weeks. It was all over the wizarding world. He filed the thought away for later.

“Now is nice. Food is better. We used to boil everything. Internet- so helpful.” He laughed a bit. “I try and focus on the good.”

That was a joke, right? It didn’t look like Steve was joking. “Pardon me for saying,” Lucifer drawled, “But you have remarkably great skin for an octogenarian.” He wasn’t outwardly reacting very much, but Lucifer had definitely tensed with confusion at Steve’s comment.  

Steve always found it in him to be surprised when someone didn’t know. “I’m the boy who went missing in the 30s and woke up here.” He said it as fact. Nothing less, nothing more.

Tony swallows the lump in his throat, unsure how to deal with these emotions. “I nevwr wanted you to feel this way. I’m sorry.” He turns his head just enough to move from beard to Steve’s lips in a soft and quick kiss. “So. I made dinner. You clearly need it.” He tries to joke but Steve did look rough.

Steve huffed and nodded. “Yeah, I haven’t really been eating.” He said it like a fact. Because it was. He hadn’t. He was probably much weaker than he was willing to admit, but there was no changing that now. He savored the kiss though. It warmed a part of him that had been cold for so long. He wanted to say I love you again, but didn’t.
