The First Day
The first day in the newsroom is over whelming, here are a few tips to get you through!
Tip: BRING A NOTEBOOK
All of the important details will be given to you when you first come in and you don't want to be caught without pen and paper AT ALL TIMES.
TIP: BRING YOUR LUNCH
You definitely won't have time to get take out. Everybody brown bags it, so don't worry, nobody will think you'll lame.
TIP: DON'T TELL ANYBODY ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE
Everyone is out to get your job whether it be someone below you whose itching to be a reporter or it's someone higher who wants their friend to have your job. It's okay to make friends but ALWAYS watch your mouth you never know who's listening.
TIP: DON'T RELY ON ANYBODY
Nobody is going to hold your hand and tell YOU where YOU need to be. You have to know what's going on at all times. If you have to be somewhere make sure you arrive at least ten to fifteen minutes early.
TIP: LOOK PROFESSIONAL
First impressions mean everything, especially in this business. You must come in with a polished look. Men should have facial hair groomed. Females should have their makeup looking clean (you're not going to the club ladies). Hair brushed, nails should be clean or freshly polished and everyone should dress to impress.
TIP: KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF
The hardest part about this business is keeping your mouth shut. Everyone has personal bias but keep it out of your story and out of the newsroom. Don't tell people your views on politics, war, guns, social classes etc. If it causes any controversy keep it to yourself.
TIP: SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
Make sure your social networking site is clean from any photos you wouldn't want your boss to see. You bet your ass they're going to google you, and if the first thing they see is a photo of you doing a keg stand questions will be asked. Be yourself but just remember people are always watching and anything on the internet stays on the internet.
