New d&d character idea;
A guy who has an affinity for music, he can compose masterpieces out of nowhere and can play every instrument known to man.
His name…Phil Harmonic.
His race and class…Goliath Barbarian.
His biggest trauma…they don’t make harmonica’s for people his size.

the notes on this post are SENDING me
YouTube is implementing an AI policy that tracks your watch history and determines your age with it. The only way to be able to continue watching the videos you want on YouTube if you've been falsley flagged as a minor by their AI is to give YouTube your government ID. This is being implemented in the US right now. It is essential to rage against this and put YouTube in the fucking ground if they continue with it—that may be the only way to make them backtrack. But damn isn't that hard to do when responding to this announcement with a polite but negative comment flags you for violating community guidelines and bans you from even posting it?
After I reblogged this, I did some looking, and found the policy update page that talks about the implementation of age verification.
It's called "Extending Protections to More US-Based Teens" and it goes into effect on August 13, 2025.
Google states that on that date, they'll begin rolling out "an age estimation model to determine if a US-based user is under the age of 18." No way AI can fuck that up, right?
This will occur "regardless of the birthdate you entered when creating your account." So, a 33-year-old like myself, despite putting my accurate birthdate, will still be subjected to this AI model and cannot opt out. Great.
And then they'll use the model to market shit to teenagers, because that's always gone well--wait, I'm sorry, they'll use it to "extend age-appropriate product experiences and protections to more teens (like enabling digital wellbeing tools and only showing non-personalized ads)." Right.
Google claims they've used this model elsewhere and it's worked well. (I'm assuming they're referring to the age verification roll out in response to the UK’s Online Safety Act.)
The model in question uses "a variety of signals" like "YouTube activity and longevity of the account." Well that's not vague at all.
When ZDNet reached out, "a YouTube representative stressed that the age-estimation model 'does not collect any new information not already associated with the account'"--which is true... unless your account is anonymous. To revert an account wrongfully flagged as underage, you have to upload a government issued ID, selfie, or credit card. Which defeats the purpose of an anonymous account.
Like the op, I tried to voice my displeasure at the further encroachment of artificial intelligence onto internet platforms. And like op, my reply "failed to post."
What I want to know is what about the above reply or mine
violates community policy? Or does Google just have AI content filters set up to ping key phrases? This is particularly grating when community policy specifically prohibits spam comments and shit like this
makes it through but comments that disagree with policy decisions are automatically flagged as inappropriate.
Regardless, this is fucking bunk, on three levels.
Firstly, what a child consumes on the internet is not the responsibility of the internet--or its users. It is the responsibility of the parent of that child.
Parental controls exist not just on televisions, but on phones and computers as well. Not only is it available via the hardware we're using to access the platform, it's also already available on the fucking platform.
Secondly, with this AI age verification rollout, Google is telling its consumers that they get to decide what we consume. That we as consumers are not in control of our experience and that we clearly do not know what is in our own best interests.
This is a violation of the concept of consumer sovereignty.
Thirdly, this model is more or less the implementation of Google's own privatized version of KOSA. Which, as we've discussed ad nauseam here on Tumblr and on the internet at-large, is largely the first step toward internet censorship.
I don't think I need to remind anyone that censorship is bad. For lots of reasons.
And look, I know we're all tired. There are Things Happening and they just keep fucking happening. I know it's a lot.
But you and me? We're the boss in this situation. No company should ever feel comfortable enough to dictate what its consumers can and cannot access. Companies work for us. Without consumers, companies cease to exist. So we have a lot more power than it feels like we do in this situation.
For better or worse, Google and YouTube are part of the ecosystem of information on the internet. And access to information is important. The freedom to access information is a right that we must protect at all costs, regardless of the age of the person accessing that information.
So take a deep breath. And keep yelling at them about this.
You can:
Spam their social media.
Call their customer service line (1-650-253-0000).
File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
(Politely) Yell at your local news media--if local news covers it, there's a chance that national news might.
Sign this petition (or another like it).
And if you're sick of Google's bullshit, you can also just... stop. Stop using their services. And let them know that's why you're leaving.
There are alternatives to Google services:
Proton has a VPN, email service, and also has a drive, similar to Google's, as well as a docs feature similar to Google docs.
Ellipsus is an alternative to Google docs.
Obsidian is another.
There's also Dropbox Paper.
LibreOffice is an alternative to the Google suite/Microsoft Office suite and storage is local to your device rather than the cloud.
DuckDuckGo is a great alternative to Google search, with an easy opt-out for AI features.
Firefox is a good alternative browser for Chrome.
Twitch, Vimeo and DailyMotion, are viable alternatives for YouTube, depending on what you use it for.
There is, unfortunately, no perfect solution. Google has a monopoly on many of the services it offers, including video-sharing.
But that's another great reason to contact your reps! If you want to keep using YouTube and other Google products, or you don't want other companies to follow Google's lead, go yell at your representatives about it. They have the power to demand action on a state and federal level to protect their constituents.
Call and demand they protect their constituents from predatory business practices (which demanding an ID or credit card, when they have a history of data breaches, most certainly is). Tell your reps that it's against your freedom as a consumer for Google to decide what is and is not appropriate for its consumers to consume, and nowhere in the Constitution does it say that Google is arbiter of our access to information. And let them know that their action or lack thereof will directly impact your voting decisions during the next election.
The only way we can get companies like Google to stop doing stupid shit like this is to get loud about it and to stop using their services.

It's Okay To Not Like Horror
I talked about this briefly as a rent-lowering gunshot, but I feel like expanding it after seeing yet another post begging for a heavily-edited version of "Re-Animator", because the OP didn't want to see things which are foundational and necessary to see in order to understand "Re-Animator".
Lest I be labeled a heartless bastard, let me point out that I suggest this particular approach out of experience.
For years and years, I tried to make myself like the subgenre of horror films called splatter. I watched various films that are considered to be splatter. I watched movies that were adjacent to splatter. I told people I was a gore-hound. I tried to find the most disturbing, awful, and disgusting films possible when most of the information about same was spread by word of mouth and by semi-secretive online forums. I put in an active effort.
And then I watched the first "Saw" film.
And not only did my partner-in-crime get up and run out of the room during the big scene with Lawrence and the titular saw, I sat frozen. I watched, but only because I couldn't move. I experienced sympathy pains in my leg and foot during that scene which immobilized me. I finished the movie, but only because I didn't have a whole lot of choice in that moment.
After that, I started accepting some things.
I accepted that I do not like splatter films. I can stand a lot of violence onscreen, provided that I have the personal sense that the violence has a purpose other than depiction, and provided that it isn't relentless throughout the entire work. I do not enjoy stories where the portrayal of violence, of human pain, is the primary purpose of the story. (This distinguishes splatter from other, even very violent forms of horror; the object of the art is primarily in the portrayal.)
There is nothing morally wrong with splatter horror. There's nothing wrong with being a gore-hound. It's just not for me.
Accordingly, I do not watch splatter films. I uplift and support my friends who are into "Saw" or "Hostel" or "Haute Tension" or "Martyrs", but I have no plans on ever getting into this style of film again. I avoid films which are considered to be crossovers.
I don't feel like my life is missing anything. I don't feel like I'm less of a horror fan. I don't feel like I'm missing out on all the coffinshipping. I'm older, and one of the luxuries of getting older is that I have learned what I like, what I don't like, what I can tolerate, and what I can't. I have seen enough films at this stage in my life, and I don't want to waste my time watching stuff I won't enjoy based on its genre alone.
What I don't do is go onto Tumblr and say "Hey, I really wanna watch 'Saw'! Can anybody direct me to a cut of the movie that edits out all of the traps?"
First, it is kind of silly to take the very reason a thing exists, remove it, and then think you have still meaningfully interacted with the original media. If you cut the dream sequences from "Nightmare on Elm Street", you haven't seen "Nightmare on Elm Street". If you cut the stalking sequences from "Halloween", you have not seen "Halloween". If you cut the gruesome murders and mentions of child death from "Friday the 13th", you haven't seen "Friday the 13th". You may as well just not watch it.
Second, whether we like it or not, demanding a censored version of a horror work is placing judgement on people who enjoy that work uncensored. People who demand censored fanfic on the Archive are, in fact, judging people who read or write uncensored fanfic. "I could never watch such disgusting drivel" is placing judgment on people who do watch stuff you consider to be disgusting or drivel. I repeatedly stated in the above essay that I do not judge folks who like splatter films because failing to do so means I am implicitly placing judgment on folks who like splatter films.
To suggest there is something so wrong about the original work that you must only engage with it in a form that could be shown on an airplane, is to suggest that there's something equally wrong with people who engage with the work as originally presented.
Third, and this is where I am going to be judgemental myself, let's be totally honest here.
People who say they want to watch "Re-Animator" censored don't want to watch "Re-Animator".
They feel social pressure to watch "Re-Animator" because West was and is a popular blorbo on Tumblr and TikTok. They've seen heavily curated and edited "fan videos" which amount to the same set of six Danbert clips and five Herbert-only clips. They've seen fluffy fanart reblogged by their friends. And they feel like they're supposed to like "Re-Animator" because they liked those fan videos, and thought the fanart was cute, and anyway, their friends are all telling them they have to watch "Re-Animator"--
--only watch out for That Scene, it's gross! And That Scene. It's upsetting. And That Whole Subplot, it's super gross. And ignore how Herbert behaves in the story because it's Problematic. And ignore how the story portrays misogyny, because their friends all think portrayal is endorsement. And oh, definitely don't watch That Part. And don't ship anything but the Approved Ship in the Approved Manner, or else they'll be stalked and harassed by people who are infuriated that they didn't like the movie Correctly. Plus they'll be kicked off all their Discord servers, or suspended while being warned that YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT THAT PART OF THE MOVIE ON HERE, DIDN'T YOU KNOW THAT?!
So these folks end up on Tumblr asking for a curated version of the film. One that's safe for TikTok and Tumblr and Discord Communities. One that won't get them in trouble and will allow them to claim that they've seen The Movie and know who The Character is. That way, they can join in with their friends in harassing anyone who doesn't write The Character the way they want him to be written--that is, the heavily censored and entirely-divorced-from-the-source-material version of The Character approved of by their friends.
I am here to liberate you.
You don't have to watch "Re-Animator".
You don't have to like it. You don't have to engage with the fandom. You can just not. You can admit to yourself and your friends that you just don't like this style of horror. It won't make you less transmasc. It won't make you allistic. It won't even make you not a horror fan--you might like other horror stories!
Not every horror story is for you. They don't have to be. You might even feel that horror, as a genre, isn't for you. That's cool! It doesn't have to be! You can like other things! You don't have to like this thing!
Consider that this is a matter of your personal taste, and if so, don't ruin the fandom for people whose taste differs from yours.

learning that ofc means ‘of fucking course’ is such bullshit. she’s ‘ofcourse’ to me
Fictional men who never learned how to deal with trauma, guilt or fear so they settled for hate and violence instead but are willing to become a better version of themselves for that one person who continuously shoves care and understanding down their throats until they realize that they too are deserving of love and it actually does feel kinda nice
In this essay I will-
seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises it’s about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors
I work at a bookstore and hearing one of my male coworkers call smutty romantasy "the downfall of society" because it's "literally just porn" radicalized me
Men have an entire industry. Entire industries dedicated to their sexualities. Let women have fantasy sex. there's not even a camera crew involved.
