Courtney Summers, Cracked Up to Be
Jake, literally one page later.
Alien (1979)
While reading All the Rage I was thinking that my getting ready routine isn’t very complicated and wouldn’t take that long to explain…and then I really started thinking about it.
These are the products I use every day. I use all of these every day.
What does this say about me?
What does it say about society that I think this is a “simple” routine.
But I love my routine. I love each step. I love how it feels mindless. I love how the process seems so important. I love how I look in the mirror when I am done.
Getting ready is a religious experience–I can’t be the only one.
I’m always intrigued by beauty routines, because I don’t have one, I’ve never had one, and I don’t understand them. It always seems like so much work, and how do you learn what’s best, or how to use things? I missed some typical development, obviously. And so I am intrigued.
Make-up missed me during my teenage years and early twenties, too. Minus that one time in seventh grade when I decided I needed to wear silver make-up everything because I think I read it in YM as being ‘in’ and that was a disaster. But then YouTube beauty tutorials changed EVERYTHING for me! I learned a lot of practical application tips from vloggers that made me realize 1) I could wear make-up and the how of it wasn’t a big secret and 2) I also got a better understanding of what types of products there are and the why of using them and 3) that wearing make-up is as much or as little work as you want it to be. Youtubing tutorials like‘every-day’ or ‘minimal make-up looks’ are super helpful launching points!
Courtney Summers, All the Rage
Soooo I was pretty chuffed about scoring a review copy of All the Rage for Tumblr’s Reblog Book Club, and then it arrived WITH SWAG. Awwww yeah. (Made myself a pretty purple bookmark out of a decal, and it shall be my Official Page Marker for RBC purposes. Thank you, Tumblr, Macmillan, Rachel Fershleiser!

Too bad no one can run forever, huh.
Thanks so much for the link about story types! That was quite helpful. :)
You’re welcome! I’m glad it helped. :)
God I love this book.

I didn't know what to make for dinner and ended up perusing Kelsey's menu because what doesn't everyone look at menus when they are hungry and uninspired. They have this sandwich called The Messy Goat which I have never tried but they listed all their ingredients so here is my bastardized take on something that probably tastes better at their restaurant. That said, mine was STILL INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS.
Ingredients Bun, guacamole, spinach, portobello mushroom, tomatoes, goat cheese, red onion, garlic cloves, chicken, white vinegar, balsamic salad dressing.
Slice your red onions, put them in a bowl and sprinkle them with vinegar. This will take the bite out of them, so they don't overpower the sandwich.
Rub the dirt off your portobello, de-stem and de-gill it. Take one garlic clove, slice it in half and rub the side of it all over the top of your mushroom. Chop up the garlic clove (add a few more if you want! Garlic is great!) and the portobello stems, but not the portobello.
Slice a chicken breast and cook it in a pan with the chopped stems and garlic and coat it all with some of that balsamic dressing. When the chicken is close to done, add your portobello to the pan and cook it until it's as cooked as you want it. If you want the dish to be vegetarian, obviously omit the chicken here. Drizzle some of the balsamic--not a lot, you can always add more later--to the mushroom.
Time to assemble!
Take your bun and smear some guacamole on both halves. From the bottom up: spinach, mushroom, tomatoes, cheese and onion in mushroom cap (add your top bun here if you're a vegetarian), chicken, drizzle with a little more balsamic, spinach, slap on the top of the bun and there you have it.
YUM.
Other ideas: you could slice up all this stuff and put it in a wrap. Or you could slice up everything, add more greens, skip the buns, and make a sort of deconstructed messy goat warm salad. That would be really good too.
Whether or not mine lives up to the real deal this was totally messy and I got it all over myself but it was so good I didn't even mind (or: hi I'm on a deadline), so I'm assuming I did SOMETHING right.
