alcohol burned in her belly as she let out a loose chuckle, elongated by the blur tequila offered. 

                        her brother’s animosity towards carcosa, towards anyone was a guarantee eve could always rely on. she could practically plan her schedule around it. while each child possessed the family’s rage, both had inherited it from different parents. when adam glared at outsiders, eve only saw their mother. 

she took a drink following that thought. 

“so what’s that mother’a yours up to anyways? bet she got scared when her walkin’ ATM almost bit the dust.”

“Next time, give me the memo before I plant my ass in somethin' that belongs to your brother.”

                It was a muttered comment, the words burying themselves into crystal and dripping down into tequila as she raised the drink to her lips, booze burning the back of her throat.

                She internally cringed at the blonde's question, the thought of her mother stinging more than the alcohol on the tip of her tongue. Eve was right, in her own brash way; nearly losing a daughter wasn't what had terrified Norma, it was the idea that if Cane had succeeded, she would've lost the one thing standing between her and the youngest Thorne's wrath.

                                                  Another swig.

“Nothin' more than the usual,” Carcosa mumbled, exhaling deeply. Her thumb lightly traced over the glass, scoffing and giving a quick shake of her head. “You're damn right 'bout that. Soon as she heard I was gon' live, she dropped the carin' mother act real quick. Only thing she's been worried 'bout since is how I'm gon' keep payin' y'all off.”

She usually didn't give up an hour of her morning to come into work early, not unless it meant adding some extra weight to her paycheck. She should have been curled up in bed still, head buried under a pillow as the daily ritual of furious yelling and a toddler's screeching from her neighbor's apartment threatened to jerk her into the world of consciousness, only to cease within fifteen minutes, leaving Carcosa to drift again with the muffled hoots and giggles of a cartoon.

                 Her brain reminded her of this as a yawn passed through her lips, the faintest feeling of fatigue resting on her shoulders as Carcosa strolled into the Sheriff's Department, bag hanging on her shoulder and a cup of coffee in either hand. She did her best to shake the sensation, mumbling a few hellos and giving nods of greeting and a quick smile to the familiar faces that had already begun to fill the building.

As she reached her desk, Carcosa silently cursed herself for not waiting. Why the hell did she have to do this right now? Why couldn't she chat up Dylan at a later, more civil hour?

                                                   Oh, right.                  

                 Because the death of a certain Coffin Cheater had been keeping her up at night.

Rich Cash's murder had left those that knew him with more questions than answers. Sure, he had his fair share of enemies, but his sudden and violent end had left people shocked, not to mention downright confused. Name’s had been tossed around, wondering just who had the balls to slaughter the infamous President, but no one could come up with anything solid when it came to a potential killer. Friends, family, and enemies alike were stumped, Carcosa in no way excluded from this. 

                 She’d grown up knowing the man, how the hell was she not supposed to wonder?

With no answers and an itch for the truth, Carcosa had pretty quickly settled on the idea that if anyone could give her something, it was Dylan. At least, that’s what she hoped. Rumor had it he had been put in charge of the case and Eve seemed pretty keen on keeping him in her pocket for a reason, so if there was any good place to start, it was definitely with him.

                 “Mornin’!” Carcosa greeted as she neared his desk, coffee cups in hand and a small bounce in her step. She flicked her dark locks over her shoulder with a quick shake of her head, perching herself carefully on the edge of his desk.

                 “I was hopin’ this would be enough of a bribe to steal ya for a few minutes,” she said in a lower tone, lips curling into a smile as she set the drink in front of him. 

                                  “---- Y’know, before this place turns into a madhouse.”

eve watched carcosa settle into adam’s chair. 

                                                                  she said nothing, looking towards the hall in hopes that adam would emerge and reclaim the seat he hadn’t occupied for hours. the chair was his, alienated possession was always important to her brother. eve found her own seat at the corner of the couch, tequila in hand as she sank into the familiar cushion. 

                                                                “well he ain’t gonna be happy, if that’s what you’re askin’.” 

he would probably be furious, especially as a stranger came in and tainted their space of solace. eve had a plan. she could only hope her brother saw what she was trying to do with their little dealer. at the mention, she could hear him begin to pad down the stairs, a devilish grin burning her lips as she took a drink of her tequila. as adam entered the room, eve chimed in. 

                     “might help a BIT if you weren’t sittin’ in his chair.”

She sat frozen, but only for a moment.

                 A hushed slue of curses flew from the dealer's lips as she scrambled to her feet, eyes darting from the entryway to Eve, then desperately moving about the room in search of another seat. Carcosa moved quickly, albeit not gracefully, plopping down on the other end of the couch, practically perched on the edge of the cushion instead of settling into it like most would.

                                                     So much for getting comfortable.

She shot a quick glance in the older Thorne's direction, only to look away again when she was met with a steely gaze. Her interactions with Adam had been... slim, to say the least. But if there was anything that she had learned by working for the meth tycoons of Bumfuck, it was that Eve truly was the nicer Thorne.

                 “You couldn’t’a told me that before I sat down?” Carcosa hissed, a pointed glare aimed in the blonde’s direction. “Did ya forget the whole “tryna stay outta trouble” thing?”

A drug deal… Yeah, well, that wasn’t her area of expertise. That was more of Ruby’s job. She was better with people that Zahra would ever be. And it wasn’t like the brunette condemned what was happening there. She wouldn’t be that much of a hypocrite, since their money came from the weed business anyway.

When the shorter brunette told her not to stare though, Zahra looked down at her feet, feeling slightly embarrassed. Of course she shouldn’t stare for too long. 

      “Right.” Shaking her head, Zahra chuckled softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears, before she looked up at the other woman. “Oh well, I guess that answers my silly little question.” She wondered what kind of drug the person was buying if that was how close to people Ruby usually stood. “You see that often ‘round here?”

“Don't worry, it's sorta hard not to stare when you realize what's goin' on.” Carcosa offered, noticing the twinge of embarrassment in the woman's features. It was her own little form of reassurance. “'Sides, they ain't exactly the definition of discreet.”

              She couldn't help but laugh to herself as she tore her attention away from the deal and turned back around on her stool, resting an elbow on the bar's wooden surface. Her ability to spot such things had only improved since she'd taken up the task of slinging crystal for the Thornes, as had her ability to notice when someone was fucking up.

Between Eve's harsh hand and having Weiss as her personal meth mentor, Carcosa didn't have a large margin for error these days. Whoever was currently doing a shitty job of being inconspicuous, she could only hope that they weren't working for the same people.

              “Oh, yeah. All the damn time.” She nodded, lifting the bottle to her lips once again. “God ain't the only higher power 'round here,” the tiniest of smirks played at the corners of her lips.

“--- You didn't hear 'bout the meth lab explosion that happened awhile back?”

                                  Hanging around church folk usually wasn't Carcosa's bag.

The whole idea of community worship made her uncomfortable; dressing to the nines every Sunday, subjecting yourself to some of the most judgmental eyes in the town, and speaking to a silent entity that possibly didn't even exist? Not exactly her idea of a good time. It made perfect sense to her why neither of her parents had ever insisted on making praising the good lord a regular thing.

                 Hell with either of their reputations, they probably wouldn't have even made it through the damn doors.

But friends had been somewhat difficult to come by lately, between Marty's incarceration and her brush with a serial killer, so who the hell was she to turn down a little bit of girl time? Besides, Natalie was a nice girl --- a little tamer than what she'd grown used to, but nice nonetheless. And with her friendship, for lack of a better word, with Miss Thorne, perhaps nice was exactly what she needed.

                 Taking a last drag from her cigarette, Carcosa blew a steady stream of smoke into the air, extinguishing the remains of it under her boot.

                                  And just in time, too.

A grin spread across pink lips as she spotted the blonde, waving from her spot in the parking lot to catch her attention. They’d agreed to meet up after Natalie’s shift and go from there, leaving the dealer to hope that just maybe, she could talk her into something a little more interesting than a fellowship dinner.

                 “Hey!” She greeted, pushing herself off of the front of her truck. “I was wonderin’ when they were gonna let you outta there.”

                “I wouldn't stare too long, though. They see ya noticin' them, you might have bigger problems than comin' off as creepy.”
