I think Death is often miscredited as the first death metal band. I believe Seven Churches by Possessed was the first death metal album. However, Death’s influence on the death metal genera is undeniable. Death was (in my mind at least) somewhat detached from the mainstream of death metal. Chuck was an innovator not a trend setter, and he further expanded the sound of Death which each album. He was very opposed the the satanic, misanthropic, gore and guts stereotypes associated with extreme metal. His music was technical and extreme, but also melodic and beautiful. I’m sure Chuck wouldn’t want to be remembered as “The Godfather of Death Metal”. I think we should instead remember him for the genuinely good person he was. For his ability to break away from from the trends, expand his musical horizons, and his will to persevere.
