I know that the current Gundam Eight manga has space kaiju, but it reads like a fairly-straightforward case of space racism being mediated by mecha. Standard Gundam franchse fare, in other words.
This trailer, on the other hand, feels very much like Macross Frontier with a v-fin slapped on the protagonist's suit, and a buster sword.

Why are Gundams like that?
Depends on the Gundam continuity.
Universal Century, After War Gundam X, 00 et seq., Iron-Blooded Orphans: the mecha have a fusion reactor that emits a handwavium particle which interferes with electromagnetic waves (unshielded electronics, radar, radio, IR, less so visual frequencies but still enough to blur lasers beyond a few kilometers), so combat has to be conducted in-person, and (according to later-written UC worldbuilding) humanoid body plans are easier to control for zero-G attitude adjustments via limb repositioning.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam: Earth is a boxing ring, so of course you'd want the singular mobile weapon representing your country be as easy to control in martial arts by using a motion-capture suit, which means the mobile weapon needs to be humanoid.
Iron-Blooded Orphans, Witch from Mercury: Brain-computer interfaces are most-easily used to control humanoid mecha.
WfM: Maybe something about precision warfare in a setting where mecha developers live in fragile space habitats? But primarily corporate dick-measuring contests.
AGE: A vault of sealed history is leaking archaeotechnology.
SEED et seq.: Arms race from power-assisted spacesuits.
00 et seq.: One Super-Intelligent Dude decides that humanoid power armor is the future of war.
Wing: One secret military group starts making mobile suits because they think they'll get military advantage or something.
Various SD Gundam: Because they're little guys.
The various Build shows: Because they're toys.
I do like this post, but at the same time I can't help but feel like the "SD Gundam" bit is an oversimplification of what they are.
Various SD Gundam: Because they're little guys except when they aren't and a large amount of them are basically even more of Shonen Protagonists than the Protagonist of the ACTUAL Shonen-demographized Mainline Animes with some of them having God-like powers and other actually being Gods, like the one who's the God of a world that got split in two by a demon lord he was destined to slay then got fused back together then sacrificed himself the save his world from a supernova then was revived and turned evil by his immortal archnemesis, and another who apes on "Fate"!Gilgamesh and lost his world in a war so now he kidnaps other SDs from across the multiverse and forces them into a battle royale where they have to take each others souls and if they take too many they'll transform into giant versions of themselves that look like the mainline mechs in the franchise and this is not a good thing because they become mindless berserkers in this state.
Yeah, it is an oversimplification of all the SD shows, but this is also an oversimplification of the various Build shows.
What differentiates the SD shows from every other Gundam is that the Gundams have no pilots; they themselves are the characters. The closest any other show gets to that is in Witch from Mercury, where the MS with a persona is wildly outside the norm. That the Gundams themselves are characters instead of machines is what I was trying to get at.

After hearing my grousing about the opening of For All Mankind season 4, wherein a pants-on-head stupid engineering decision resulted in the inciting incident for the plot of most of the season, a friend of a friend encouraged me to push on.
The ending music for S4E7 is entirely worth it.

So, uh, for context: the last half-year has not been good to me. Too many funerals. Two funeral-shaped things in the last two weeks.
This is the episode about The Hero of The South: S2E2.
He was prescient. He knew that he would die in battle against the demons — Schlacht The Omniscient, who could see a thousand years into the future, and the Seven Sages of the Demon King — and he, knowing that his request would fail and he would fall in one year, still found a random elf maiden picking flowers in the woods, and asked to recruit her to his party to defeat Schlacht. He knew that he would die against Schlacht and the Seven Sages, and that if she joined him, his fate would not change.
He asked her, so that she would reject him, so that he could tell her of his gift and fate, so that as a follow-up he could ask her to join the party of the man who would simply be known as "the Hero", and she could pass a message to him:
"I swear that I will clear a path for you. I, humanity's strongest hero: the Hero of the South. Even if my accomplishments should be buried in the shadows of history."
And Frieren's quest in that half-episode was to clean his statue, because the people of that town had not forgotten who he was. This is not sad; just tear-jerking.
Frieren S2E5 explains why drinking Malört — or Fernet, or any similar liquor — is enjoyable.

Of the people I have least sympathy towards are Little Old Grandmas who just Can't Pay the Property Tax and has to move out of her Sentimental Family Home with only several million dollars of appreciation to tide her over. Just the worst ratio of whining to suffering among the gentry. Spend a week sleeping on the streets and then explain why you need lower property taxes
It is somewhat of an actual problem in my area that Little Old Grandmas on fixed incomes in houses that pre-pandemic would've sold for $40k are now being assessed at $150k, and their property tax bill has gone from $800/year to $2000/year. This increase is partly due to the increase in valuation of their home, and partly due to the property-tax levies that voters keep voting in to pay for things that the state and federal governments won't pay for, such as schools and road maintenance.
Of course, this could be solved with a graduated property tax, where value above $amount is taxed at a higher rate, but that is antithetical to the principle of flat taxes, which is sworn to by the party in power.
I really want to get through to you that I am not sympathetic to the old woman here. She has received over $100,000 that she did not work for and now has to pay taxes on that. She could solve the tax problem by moving. Real, actual problems with housing are the domain of people who might become homeless.
The nearest place she can afford to purchase with this $100k is two hours thataways, which means it's two hours from her doctors, two hours from her support networks, two hours from anyone who knows her and can check in on her when she doesn't show up to church on Sunday. Her car might be able to drive to church, but anymore, the nice girl down the street picks her up and drives her. She gets Meals on Wheels so she doesn't need to drive to the grocery store. Her car has not been started in three months. She can't see that it has two flat tires.
She would be better served by moving to a nursing home. She cannot afford a nursing home that matches her care needs.
If she loses her house to a tax sale, she will become homeless.
The $100k in value that she has received paradoxically makes her poorer, analogously to a welfare trap.
Hmmm. I do not think that is true. I do not think there are many areas in the United States where someone with a fixed income but also $140k in the bank cannot afford to live anywhere in a 2 hour radius. I think maybe you should meet some more homeless people
Yeah, that's fair. She could pay someone to move her from her 800 sq. ft. 2br 1ba in the poor neighborhood to the poorer neighborhood, to a $100k 800 sq. ft 2br 1ba fixer-upper on the other side of town, where she knows no one and no one knows her, and she doesn't know how to get around safely. Her support networks would be severely stretched, but they would still come visit her every weekend, until they forget.
Tax policy can be designed in such a way that the burdens are borne by grannies with a paper value of $1,000,000, not the grannies with a paper value one-tenth that.

@irradiate-space it matters not at all that she's old and frail. how many has she immiserated for her comfort? well, about as many as could live on an apartment block where her house is. the policies that keep her comfy have stolen multiple lives of DALYs from those left to shudder outdoors because moving would be like, hard for her or whatever.
for a personal example, I used to live a total shithole. my neighbour literally had the roof collapse in on him, mould covered every surface, and it didn't get below 30C indoors in the summer (sometimes not even at night) without air conditioning, which I didn't have. the kind of portable air conditioner that is effective is locally illegal, and a window unit was uninstallable.
this ended up hospitalizing me, among other things.
why wasn't there anywhere better to rent? well, grandma has be kept comfy. the elderly are so vulnerable, after all.
There is no need to develop a theory of morality that justifies the punishment of the grandmother for having the temerity to live in a house. There are no policy obstacles to building more housing. There is simply poverty.
In the specific neighborhood I am thinking about, there are many empty lots on which apartment buildings could legally be built, without displacing existing homeowners. Most of those empty lots exist because of houses which collapsed from lack of maintenance, because this is in fact a poor neighborhood. The reason that apartment buildings are not built in those lots is because no one has the money to pay for the construction of the buildings. The few apartment buildings that have been built by grant-funded nonprofits in the last decade cannot pay the costs of maintenance and upkeep on their buildings; even tenants with government subsidies for housing are too poor to cover the costs of upkeep.
If you raise property taxes to subsidize the construction of more housing, poor people like this grandmother will be made homeless through tax sales before the new affordable housing comes online.
