Injured Knee Ligaments and Physical Therapy
Knee ligaments are usually torn by severe forces caused by extreme and rapid bending of the knee. Since ligaments are strong bands of soft tissue that attach one bone to another, tearing a major ligament is usually very painful and elicits a “popping” sensation. Occasionally, the ACL can just degrade gradually over time, perhaps occurring with several small accidents or injuries. People with a deficient ACL feel tremendous instability with squatting, lunging, jumping, and quick change of direction exercises. ACL tears are more common in high contact sports such as football and rugby, in which awkward hits and movements occur. Sports demanding a constant directional change such as basketball and soccer also have a higher than normal occurrence rate for ACL tears.
The knee has 4 major ligaments. They give the joint stability and strength. The 4 knee ligaments connect the thighbone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia).
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This ligament is in the center of the knee. It controls rotation and forward movement of the shin bone.
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). This ligament is in the back of the knee. It controls backward movement of the shin bone.
Medial collateral ligament (MCL). This ligament gives stability to the inner knee.
Lateral collateral ligament (LCL). This ligament gives stability to the outer knee.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy For Athletes
When it comes to sports, injuries play a huge part. As much as athletes try to avoid these injuries, accidents do happen unfortunately. The results of these injuries have ended athletes’ careers or prevented them from playing games. Physical therapy helps athletes to reduce pain, improve overall health and prevent reoccurring injuries. Sports therapy is a segment of the global healthcare industry that has recently become quite popular due to it’s applications and positive results in sports. A physical therapist specializing in sports medicine has methods for bringing your body back from injury to get your body back into peak performance. Assessing what went wrong in your body allows them to formulate how to fix it and give tangible methods for strengthening the injury.
Physical therapy (PT), also known as physiotherapy, is one of the allied health professions that, by using mechanical force and movements (biomechanics or kinesiology), manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy, remediates impairments and promotes mobility and function. Physical therapy is used to improve a patient’s quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, physical intervention, and patient education, performed by a physical therapist.
Physical therapists are closely involved in the care and wellbeing of athletes including recreational, semi-professional (paid) and professional (full-time employment) participants. This area of practice encompasses athletic injury management under 5 main categories:
Acute care – assessment and diagnosis of an initial injury Treatment – application of specialist advice and techniques to encourage healing Rehabilitation – progressive management for a full return to sport Prevention – identification, and address of deficiencies known to directly result in, or act as precursors to injury, such as movement assessment Education – sharing of specialist knowledge to individual athletes, teams or clubs to assist in the prevention or management of injury

-because I've seen a few posts in the last few weeks mentioning back pain-
I've had chronic lower back pain for about a year now, and physical therapy has helped lessen it significantly
So, for those who don't want to go to/don't have access to physical therapy, here's the PT circuit they prescribed me:
1. Clamshells, 10 each side (adjust to your ability. If this is too easy, lift the ankle up as well, keeping the leg at a 90° angle)
2. Single leg glute bridge, 10 each leg. (Try and keep your core tight. If it's too challenging, start with a regular glute bridge (both feet on the floor)
3. Deadbugs, 10 total. (An easier version of deadbugs has you clasp your hands behind your head, or you can extend both legs together)
4. (Optional) Side plank! Shoot for 15-30 seconds each side, but adjust as needed
I usually repeat this circuit 2-4 times, then finish with
5. STRETCH! These are the ones I was given that seemed the most effective:
Note that I am not a professional, I was just given this info by a professional. It takes a little while to see improvement (a few months) and consistently doing these exercises is key. I feel best when I do them 3-5 times a week.
If you feel like these exercises would do more harm than good, obviously you know yourself better than I do. Do whatever you feel safe with :)

Vertigo, Dizziness, & Balance Deficiencies – what they have in common
By: Terry Abrams
Oftentimes when a patient is struggling with vertigo, dizziness, or feeling “off-balance”, vestibular rehabilitation with a vertigo Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist can greatly help the patient to alleviate or mostly minimize the symptoms. Patients have a hard time connecting some of these sensations into the same category, whether it be feeling like they are on a boat, losing their balance if they move their head rapidly or change positions quickly, or feeling like they are about to “pass out”. Dizziness and vertigo can be similar feelings, with different degrees of spinning, objects appearing to “move around”, or general off-balance sensations that can cause patients to stumble and sometimes even fall down.
Losing balance and risk of falling is a huge problem with the elderly that can lead to hospitalization, severe injuries, and even death in head trauma cases. Strategies for falling should always be implemented, as well as techniques for getting up off the ground after falls, which unfortunately needs to be addressed before seniors get into a situation that is tricky to get out of. For balance and vertigo issues that are caused by “central” problems, these conditions are more difficult to treat because they are caused by disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA or Stroke), Brain lesions (white matter), and many more can cause these types of central vertigo and balance conditions that are treatable, but not necessarily 100% curable. Other Central Vertigo diagnoses would be Brain Tumors, Hydrocephalus, and many other conditions.
If the patient’s issues are not caused by central problems, then it’s likely that the vertigo or dizziness is caused by peripheral disorders. Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Weaknesses, and BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) are all peripheral vertigo diagnoses. Peripheral Vestibular disorders can be treated very successfully and fully using Vertigo PT, which means the same thing as Vestibular Rehabilitation (or rehab), since the issue is in the inner ear. Chronic conditions like Meniere’s Disease may have intermittent success, but may be recurrent in the future due to the chronic nature of the condition. But BPPV conditions are completely treatable, and can be often eradicated in under a week, which is a tremendous relief to a patient.
Balance disorders can take longer to get rid of, or to minimize, because of the multiple systems that can be involved in such deficits. Patients have to be prepared to work very hard in Vertigo PT to help to improve their balance. Dizziness is really just related to Vertigo, or a symptom of Vertigo. And feeling off-balance is connected to vertigo, proprioception, central conditions, or orthopedic issues as well. Improper foot-ware, decreased sensation in the feet or legs, arthritis in leg joints, and may other orthopedic deficiencies can cause balance disorders that should be treated, before a patient’s balance continues to decline.
If a patient isn’t sure what to do to treat their problem, it’s always best to start with a visit to a Dr. and start with a diagnosis to get the condition properly classified. Then after the visit to the Dr., the patient can then come to Physical Therapy for Vertigo PT, so that the problem can be eliminated or improved.
