Track: Higher Ground Artist: TNGHT Year: 2012
Found this on Songza! Such a sick track. Fun fact: Yeezy sampled their song 'R U Ready' (2011) in 'Blood On The Leaves' on his latest album, Yeezus (2013). Also sampled? Nina Simone's cover of Billie Holiday's chilling 'Strange Fruit' (1939), originally a poem written by a Jewish HS teacher in the Bronx in protest of rampant lynchings of blacks in the South. Just a little history for you! But enjoy the track and check out some of the tracks mentioned above.
Track: Closer To You Artist: Mike Cavanaugh Year: 2010
Discovered as a result of Facebook's new graph search! I love the soft acoustics and his vocals. Check out some of his other tracks if you like this one.
Track: There and Back (Original Mix) Artist: Wolfgang Gartner Year: 2012
First heard this on Teen Wolf a few seasons back, and fell in love!
Track: Suit & Tie feat. Jay-Z (Oliver Nelson Remix) Artist: Justin Timberlake Year: 2013
Definitely one of my favorite remixes of this song so far!
Track: Young & Beautiful (Kaskade Remix) Artist: Lana Del Rey Year: 2013
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful? Will you still love me when I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will <3
Track: Sparks (Turn Off Your Mind) feat. Matthew Koma (Vicetone Remix) Artist: Fedde Le Grand, Nicky Romero Year: 2012
One of my all time favorites! I'm a HUGE Nicky fan as is, but I love me some Fedde as well. And I just discovered Vicetone - their remixes are definitely worth a listen. They know what they're doing! "Listen to your heart for your god's sake. You'll move a mind! I'll answer all the prayers that your lips place, corrupt by the lies. I pull you in, let me pull you in so slow. A new religion in a cold where we both cope. I'll take you too far just to let go. Turn off your mind... Let me show you with your yes closed... What our hearts both know is the time." Like it was said in Tiesto's Lord of Trance (2006), "Just Concentrate and Trust The Music." And if you're lucky enough, be sure to check out Fedde Le Grand at Electric Zoo 2013 over Labor Day Weekend. I'll see you there ;)
Track: Wild feat. Big Sean, Dizzee Rascal Artist: Jessie J Year: 2013
I love this song like crazyyy. I like it lyrically, musically, and the smooth incorporation of Dizzee Rascal. Not his typical genre, but I like how they changed up the flavor with him. Sean's verse was a little weak to me. "Today I woke up feeling like the mayor, I spend about a mirror looking in the mirror. As I should as much I been through, it's a wonder I look this damn good." Right. On to Jessie's verses: "If I go hard, let me tell you that it's worth it. Play the right cards, I ain't afraid to work it. Brushing it right off when they say I don't deserve it. Hands on my heart, you keep my fire burning... When it get wet, then the rain starts pouring, I turn up the heat 'cus the drama ain't important. Let 'em all talk talk, Imma just ignore it. Hands on my heart, you you keep me moving forward." Love that the lyrics speak to her confidence, motivation, and the value of hard work. We could always use more of that!
Track: A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) feat. Q-Tip, GoonRock Artist: Fergie Year: 2013
Like the rest of 'The Great Gatsby' soundtrack, this track is unique and catchy. Haven't heard anything from Fergie in a long while either. I love the nu-wave jazz/electronic genre and this is no exception. Check it out.
Track: (One of Those) Crazy Girls Artist: Paramore Year: 2013
Talk about cray-cray, lyrics-wise! Forever love to Paramore. I was glad to hear Hayley's voice again after so long. "Now when you say you wanna slow down, does it mean you wanna slow dance? Maybe you just want a little extra time to focus on our romance." BREAKS DON'T EXIST. It's over girl. "Why are you telling me goodbye? Aren't you going to stay the night?" Delusional... "I'm gonna go through your closet, just so I can smell your skin. As the chemicals swim, I know I'll never love again. I swear I'll never love again." Creepy, but ultimately sad. From one jaded to another, I know the struggle. Perhaps we shall love again... EVENTUALLY.
Track: Wonderwall (Cover by Hurts) Artist: Oasis Year: 2011
The original song was one of my favorite songs growing up! I am quite fond of this cover by the English duo, but the original is my ish. "Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me, and after all, you're my wonderwall... I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now." I miss feeling that way about someone. Le sigh.
Track: Slow Down feat. The Cataracs Artist: Selena Gomez Year: 2013
While I hate to admit it, I do like this track! Mostly musically, but I gel with the lyrics too. "Now that I have captured your attention, I want to steal you for a rhythm intervention... Can we take it nice and slow, slow. Break it down and drop it low, low. 'Cause I just wanna party all night in the neon lights 'til you can't let me go. I just wanna feel your body right next to mine, all night long. Baby, slow down the song, and when it's coming closer to the end, hit rewind... Breathe me in, breathe me out." I'm pretty sure most people can identify with the feeling of finding a tall&dark or short&light dance partner in a place where you were otherwise going to hold up the wall all night, right? (No... just me? Awkward.) The feeling of wanting to make the night last forever, not having to go back to 'reality'. It could be someone you love too, but I feel like the track is referring to a short-term activity partner (not a hookup, a dance, geez). Anyway, look at Selena stepping on out of her shell!
Track: I'm On One (KillaGraham Remix) Artist: Drake Year: 2011
Already loved the song and then KillaGraham hit it and it was love at first listen. The drops are beautiful and the song still maintains its integrity. A prime example of a remix done well.
Track: Gold Guns Girls Artist: Metric Year: 2009
Besides the fact that I love Metric, this song is one of my favorites (along with 'Help I'm Alive'). Emily Haines' silky vocals but versatility are always expected. "All the gold and the guns [and the girls] in the world... All the lace and the skin... all the toys and the tools in the box couldn't get you off." SO ungrateful, right? "I don't wanna bend like the bad girls bend. I just wanna be your friend. Is it ever gonna be enough?" He/she's incredibly hard to please and meanwhile, she just wants to be your friend (if she can't please you that is). Sheesh! Looking at it from a cultural standpoint, many girls (and guys alike) are willing to play into that silly 'friends-with-benefits' BS, but instead of doing that, there is the option of choosing friendship or the pursuit of a relationship. SHOCKER! I know. Because FWB forces you to bend into something that you are either meant to have or not. In the end, you wind up together OR one of you ends up feeling more or less attached and someone (or everyone) ends up hurt. So, spare yourself and don't bend. Especially if he's an insatiable jerk.
Track: Tunnel Vision feat. Analog Fire Artist: E.L.I.T.E Year: 2010
So, the beginning of this song was my ringtone for a really long time. I love the track itself, not too enthused by the lyrics... but yay Analog Fire! Get into them: https://www.facebook.com/analogfire.
Track: Holding A Heart Artist: Girl Named Toby/ Toby Lightman Year: 2010
