Brooklyn’s Alyse Vellturo released her debut album as pronoun recently, and we were elated when we received the CD that we pre-ordered eons ago. As expected, I haven’t been able to get enough of the indie/alt pop musician’s raspy captivating voice and striking anthems on the record. As someone who truly adores nostalgic 80s synths, I also can’t help but be drawn to this new remix of album single run by Bay Area native The Chain Gang of 1974. Kamtin Monagher brings his slow burning movie-like magic to the edit with a glossy driving electronic and nu-wave re-work. The end result is a shimmering anthem that lights up our summer nights. pronoun just wrapped a tour with Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties and is now gearing up for a tour with pop-punk outfit Real Friends prior to playing a run of shows with Taking Back Sunday, including their curated House of Vans event in Chicago. The Chain Gang of 1974′s remix of pronounce’s run can be streamed/downloaded, here.
Why do you look like you're simultainiously from the early 2000's Nu Wave scene and a 2010's tumblr hipster(the ones with the flannels)?
Likely because I was growing into my identity during the early 2000's Nu Wave scenes in the fallout of larger Punk, Goth, and Grunge movements. I have a strong memory of seeing someone punks walking near the middle school i lived near and had a giant mohawk and it was the coolest thing I'd ever see. I grew up outside of Chicago and was involved from everything from Breakdancing and graffiti to swim team, water polo, and boy scouts. So lots of trends to pull from across those groups.
I also was entering college and academia in after 2010 and had developed a weird rule for myself that if I wore a dress shirt, I had to wear a vest, and if I wore a vest I had to wear a tie. ... I also had been using a messenger bag as my school bag since 2007? This was in the area of the HEIGHT of Metrosexuality being a thing for men who cared about their appearance, bathed, and dressed a bit* nicer. So probably because I was in-part involved or in-relation to experiencing both of those.
In the last few years I've been trying make adjustments to my wardrobe in routes of clothes I always wanted to wear when I was younger. Ways to make my style more unique. More layered, stacked, or staggered. I had always found standard menswear so boring. So I knew there had to be a way to make it interesting.
But yeah. That is kind of, at least in-part, what I was going for.
