On November 13 last year, he had a fall… JOHN HAYTO: Five am in the morning, I went to the toilet, came out of the toilet did a right turn to go back to the bedroom. And my walker… went over, and I went over with it. And when I went down I stayed down. ADELE FERGUSON: Like all residents, John Hayto had been given an emergency pendent, but it was out of reach next to his bed. JOHN HAYTO: Part of me being there was partly my fault because I didn't have the pendant around my neck, and I didn't have my mobile phone… I tried to get help, singing out and making noises and all that sort of thing. To no avail. That was the Sunday, Sunday passed… on the Monday the boys come round and pick up the garbage cans… I tried to yell out to them, you know, come and get me, sort of thing. But half of them wear earphones and they're in another world (laughs) not my world… ADELE FERGUSON: After a couple of days a friend, who was unable to contact John, became worried and says he called the front office. JOHN HAYTO: He called the front office yeah… He said, he's concerned about my well-being, could they contact me and see I was well and give them ... and he left his phone number with them, and they said they'd ring him back. That never happened… the fact is that they were communicated to, and they didn't carry out what they should have done, is to come down and check me out physically. JOHN HAYTO: … Tuesday passed, Wednesday passed… my next-door neighbour she came to the door on several occasions… NEIGHBOUR (RECONSTRUCTION): Hello John, open up. Are you in there? JOHN HAYTO: But she was unfortunately very deaf… I tried to get a bottle of whiskey out of the cupboard, with my pick up stick. I thought, "If I'm going, I'll go out happy." (laughs) And, um…. But I wasn't successful at that. ADELE FERGUSON: Finally, on day 5, his cleaner found him. CLEANER (RECONSTRUCTION): Are you there John? ADELE FERGUSON (TO JOHN HAYTO): How often does your cleaner come? JOHN HAYTO: Only once a fortnight. So, I was lucky that fort night was on my schedule. ADELE FERGUSON: What would have happened if your cleaner hadn't come? JOHN HAYTO: Well I'd be a dead duck, wouldn't I? ADELE FERGUSON: John has now been in hospital for 7 months recovering… JOHN HAYTO: Since I've had the fall, I got the leg and uh… out of breath and so forth. My health has deteriorated quite considerably.
