Form and appearance of the engine number
The engine number is stamped by machine.
The engine number is composed of the 5-character engine code and the actual engine number (8 alphanumeric characters).
It can be found on a smoothly ground surface.
The engine code may be either above or below the engine number.
On newer models everything may be all on one line. The engine code is identical with the engine designation on the factory plate (identification plate).

Breakdown of the 8-character engine number
The 8-digit engine number is broken down as follows:
1st Position of the engine number:
0, 1 = 4-cylinder engines 2, 3 = 6-cylinder engines, up to 2.5 litre engine capacity 4 = 6-cylinder engines, above 2.5 litre engine capacity 5 = 8-cylinder 6 = 12-cylinder engines or motor sport (M3, M5) engines or engines derived from racing 8 = BMW 320 d
2nd – 4th position of the engine number = serial number.
5th – 8th position of the engine number = date of production, coded IAW the BMW works calendar.
An “A” in the engine number = Austauschmotor [replacement engine] (cannot be traced through the BMW database).
Replacement engines after year of production 2002 do not have an engine number stamped on but have an engine number sticker as shown below instead.
In the meantime, the practice of stamping the number onto replacement engines has been reinstated.
The number of the exchange engine is in the BMW data bank not investigateable.

Composition and appearance of the body shell number
The body shell number has 8 characters and the BMW symbol normally appears on both sides.
1 Appearance on the 1 and 3 Series (from 04 -)
2 Appearance on the Z4 (from 09 -)
3 Appearance on the 7 Series (from 08 -)
4 Appearance on the X6 Series (from 08 -)
5 Appearance on the 5 Series (from 09 -)
6 Appearance on the X1 (from 09 -)
Z4 (E85/86) and X5 (E53) bodyshell number – does not have anything to terminate the left and right extremities
The body shell number used to comprise 8 digits until model year 2003. Letters were introduced in 2003, beginning at the 5th digit.
The letter ‘L’ as an example on the Z4 (E85/86), Z4 (E89) and X6 (E71) see images above).
The number is stamped onto the body shell before painting and it is then painted.
If a mistake is made when stamping the number onto the body shell, the entire number, including the bordering, has to be invalidated by making it illegible.
The correct number then has to be place directly above or directly below the mistakenly stamped number.
The BMW works, the BKA Wiesbaden and the Bavarian LKA can identify vehicles in response to enquiries using the body shell number.
The stamping tool broke when the bodywork number was being stamped on at the MagnaSteyr plant in Graz. As a result the eight character bodywork number had instances of numbers or letters appearing in the wrong order.
The BMW symbol closing off the bodywork number at both ends is also misaligned and the numbers do not have a uniform baseline.

Composition and appearance of the body shell number
In the production period from mid September to the end of September 2004, only 486 vehicles were mis-stamped.
The series of bodyshell numbers affected was: 4260S425 to 4264S189
The gearbox number has 10 characters, 7 digits and 3 letters, e.g:1036320HCI
The current transmission number is a 10-digit number; 7 numerals, 2 letters, 1 numeral, for instance: 6002055HD4
On some older automatic transmissions, the gearbox number may contain no letters.

On an aluminium plate, riveted directly onto the gearbox (older generation vehicles)

The radio number in bmw cars should have 14 characters and begins with 2 letters designating the manufacturer.
