Summary: When Jay looks down at his green army fatigues, he feels nothing but sadness and pain. But for the few minutes every few months he hears this girl play her guitar and sing, he feels something resembling peace // or...Jay meets a girl when he comes back from the war and she helps him find his way again.

JJ crying in her office because everything is so overwhelming and the world is so scary. She goes to the bathroom to fix her make-up and finds Emily leaning against a sink, eating Doritos. Emily says that the bullpen got too loud and the file she was working on brought back difficult memories. She offers JJ a Dorito and asks if she's okay 'cheating on' Cheetos. JJ invites Emily back to her office for some quiet time. Emily accepts and follows her silently. When they get to JJ's office, Emily sees how many files are there and just grabs a stack. She sits on the floor and gets to work. JJ just watches her for a bit, shoulders slumped. Eventually, she gets back to work, too. Emily leaves back to her desk, but she hands JJ a paper crane made from a post-it note. JJ puts it where she can always see it. They both feel a little bit better.

Hello!! This is something I came up with after one of many Upstead breakdowns with some friends at 3am. It’s somewhere between a spec fic and a whole lot of wishful thinking, but it might be my favorite one-shot I’ve written. I hope you enjoy it. 💕

If you could change one thing about Upstead’s love story, what would it be?

Choosing to ignore the obvious answer because this is a fun question and deserves a fun answer! It’s a little long, so adding a cut:

If I could change anything, I would give them an almost kiss scene in s7. I think the scene where he follows her in 7x12 would be a perfect spot for it. I would’ve given the scene higher emotions and had him get more worked up at the fact that she’s insisting she’s okay when he knows she’s not. Then the moment when she touches his shoulder to leave, he grabs her wrist and stops her from walking away. He tugs her close to him and at first she looks like she wants to wrangle free but she realizes how close he is to her and decides against it. Close proximity, heightened emotions, add in a few glances between each other’s eyes and lips, then Jay leans in to make the move—and just before their lips touch she pushes against his chest. With tears in the corners of her eyes, she says the same line from the actual scene, “Go home, ‘kay?” He watches her leave with a sad look in his eyes, and that’s that. An almost kiss following her almost love-confession a few episodes earlier would’ve added a delicious layer of tension for the rest of the season leading up to their big moment in s8. It would’ve been SOOO good
