Karen Smith // Jessica Stanley parallels
I genuinely love the Volturi, especially Aro, I think they are such fun characters. It would have been so easy to go with a more classic vampire trope with them, but they are delightfully weird and don't lean so much into the pop culture Dracula stuff (that comes with the Romanians I guess). Although there is something there with book!Dracula and the effusive 'welcome to my home! leave some of the happiness you bring!' Do we know if SM has in fact read "Dracula?" I don't think I've seen her mention it in any interviews.
But anyway the Volturi are another thing that gets weird with how the books were written. Because the ending of Forever/Breaking Dawn with Bella a happily married vampire mom was already set in stone for SM, that means when the Volturi make appearances in the middle books their hands are tied. I know we joke about how "the Volturi don't give second chances but Bella got like, four," but it's really because there was no other option if SM wanted to stick to her original ending.
It does make for some fun mental gymnastics though. Like in Breaking Dawn, Aro is quick to jump on Irina's accusation because he's so desperate to acquire Alice and her remarkable gift!!! But . . . Alice was literally in his lair nine months prior and he made absolutely no effort in acquiring her then. Because he couldn't. Because that would mean Forever/Breaking Dawn wouldn't happen. Likewise when Jane and company show up in Eclipse, they can't do anything about Bella not being a vampire yet and just accept that "the date is set" and go on their way because they can't insist she be turned or whatever because again, Forever/Breaking Dawn wouldn't happen.
And I have sympathy for SM here because it's always hard to go back and fill in things when you have an ending in mind, but it does take some of the "teeth" out of the Volturi because by the time we get to the final allegedly life-and-death showdown, the Volturi have already let the protagonists go twice. They might have been more effective as a threat (and more scary!) in the original Forever Dawn.
Headcanon that one of the seemingly ungifted volturi—Caius, Felix, Sulpicia or Athenodora maybe, doesn’t matter who—actually DOES have a gift and that gift is breaking the fourth wall and suffering from extreme Doylism
