Prompt: “You can’t run forever.” “Watch me.”

Sticks and trees snap around her, Carmen gasps, legs burning and screaming. Thorns strike her side, arms and legs.
But she keeps running, just barely catching herself every time the forest trips her, or the heels to her boots snap against the rough logs she’s been chasing for hours.
Blood runs down her arms, infected by the leaves and branches she keeps running into. Blood binds uncomfortably in her chest.
Far behind, a voice calls, one that isn’t far enough.
“You-,” they’re tired, not as much as her but god it was something, “can’t run forever.”
His voice is thick with the threat, she can almost see the sadist, snarky grin on Shadowsan’s face. The rich red blade slick with the blood from her abdomen, handle clutched greedily in the once affectionate man.
Suddenly Carmen trips, a yelp as she stumbles forward, catching herself on a tree if only to lose the blood in her system she’d been trying to ignore. Carmen heaves, the red that made her now the staple of a regular tree. One she would haunt— and god she would haunt VILE for this.
For turning Shadowsan of all people, to his opposite.
There’s a panting behind her, and Carmen’s too late to run. She half turns, Shadowsan’s eyes lowered in malice, clearly enriched in the victory of their game…
Like a wild animal Carmen glares— forced to play the prey in his new whim to hunt for sport. It wobbles when she notices the blade rising, his last words to her would be her last breath.
Her last thoughts would be how she couldn’t save him… wasn’t strong enough.
The thief straightens, fully turned to her forced opponent. She won’t lose to VILE.
There’s blood in her mouth, Carmen swallows it, tears rolling down her cheeks when she riskily screams back, darting from the tree and lurching over a log just as the blade nicks her matted locks.
