u know as much as i like making fun of cole 4 not having fun or friends or joy he comes across 2 me as just very overall highly liked in the circles he was in b4 the draft. his daddy owns a shipping company n that simply could not have been cheap back then it's not even cheap nowadays that must've bumped him up in popularity n connections quite a bit n dictated what circles he even ran in; no doubt of folks like him

he's an all-american bright faced guy i'm sure he was a hit in his college circles w/ other intelligent progressives n 'charming' n outgoing since he did have more of a spark in his eyes n a will 2 live b4 ww2. u can see that in his attitude during the combat. he's dealing w/ the real time shock of suddenly not being liked by anyone in his immediate vicinity or having his schoolboy bullying behaviour tolerated

like u know he did get married n have two children. that has 2 count 4 smth. surely he must've had smth going 4 him somehow at some point in his life 4 that 2 happen. he must have at least been charming enough 2 have marie 2 b in love w/ him n have relations w/ him. which is simply unimaginable in his current form. the sexless loveless friendless man he is

one of my big questions about how 'friendless' Cole truly is and has been is when the Phelps moved to LA (because that also potentially contributes to Cole's friendless aura- everyone he knew is X hundred miles away -> and I also have many thoughts about how Marie may have felt about that. Leaving her friends too. I do think he consulted her, but as per below, if it's post war probably less than he maybe should have)

Like especially if they move upon Cole coming back to the states which feels accurate to me in that Cole can't stand to be in Stanford/San Francisco because of What He Has Done and cannot stand to be around people who Know/Knew Him and basically he wants to run away and Find Redemption. (Which Cole does by joining the LAPD instead of telling literally ANYBODY what he did.)

On the other hand a lot of Cole's unit is in LA and I know at least in the UK there was an element of regional grouping in units. So maybe Cole movedd before

OMG I DID ALSO THINK ABT THIS WHOLE THING ABT LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE PERSON FROM HIS UNIT BEING IN LA afaik the US didn't have that region division thing going on n i imagine that it'd b even harder 4 OCS bcuz OCS is a sign-up thing. so 4 that i guess it's all just a lovely lovely coincidence explained by the plot needing 2 happen

i'd never stopped 2 think abt the phelps moving 2 LA from sanfran but now that u mentioned it... yh i can definitely see him simply being too ashamed 2 continue meeting up w/ his friends (esp if they're all a great deal educated bcuz then it makes his errors more evident 2 all of them) that i no doubt think he did have real connection 2 - after all he can't b the only insufferable person in higher education - so he fled. no doubt marie was hesitant but didn't 'mind' bcuz she thought new airs would help him mentally. it didn't 😍
