im not like a movie purist but I do think a thing is like…you shouldn’t step on A New Hope's toes in your extended materials. im not into that. previous mentioned bad comic is definitely an example. and I really dislike anytime SW has tried to introduce a character who is somehow worse than Tarkin. like that’s not really necessary.

play in the space in a more interesting way. we don’t need someone who is somehow worse than Tarkin and was secretly there the whole time off screen. i think this turns SW into a bigger mess than it needs to be. and it’s…lame

Krennic is a chew toy that Disney threw into Tarkin and Vader's enclosure and they’re chewing on him and biting his head off and that works SO well. this is what we need: enriched villains.

so like I think what Gets My Goat about this and why I find it particularly distasteful is like…the rewrite of Tarkin is a really good character study of how fascism was programmed into a guy via fear and the role fear plays in the fascist playbook. as a result Tarkin is a contradictory mess. he’s some kind of gay, he isn’t interested in his family's eugenics and honestly seems to despise what was done to him and sees it as a bridge too far.

anyway fear is the whole point of the character, he has turned his family's doctrine of inflicting terror on others into policy. he feels realistic in a very grounded way against the space magic. he’s a little larger than life with his internal predator/prey mythos but mostly he's terribly mundane.

and if other characters aren’t playing thematic ball, if we get a guy who’s just some twisted cyclepath that doesn’t engage the story's ideological framework it’s like a waste of everyone’s time.

the way Vader and Tarkin continue their relationship from where they left off in the novel is just so neat to me. like there’s still resentment from Vader for the whole Ahsoka thing but there’s that ever present resignation too, and the fact that leaving the order ultimately saved her.

a lot of words to say I think it’s cute when Vader hands Tarkin a respirator like “highly recommended 👍” and Tarkin refers to the citadel escape later.

If Tarkin hadn't been so thoroughly ruined by his parents and uncle and Palpatine, maybe he'd have pursued his passion for clothing design and done an apprenticeship on Ghorman. Maybe he'd have gone on to be a successful fashion designer. What then.

Who knows, maybe he'd even have been kind. I keep thinking back to that scene where he's nine or ten years old and he says he would willingly serve Nomma, the Tarkin family's near-human servant, a plate of food and is immediately shot down by both his parents. He was a decent child, if this is anything to go by. What would he have been if his parents decided not to send him to the Carrion or his destiny was otherwise interfered with?

Tarkin and Vader bullying Krennic will never get old to me. I’m still sad the scene of Vader suggesting the test fire was cut because it 'made him look like a dick.' Vader deserves petty workplace drama. He IS a dick.

that comic where Tarkin dies cowering in fear of all the people he’s killed sucks so bad. i get why it’s appealing to fans to see the big bad space fascist cower but that’s just not how it happened. it’s a fantasy within a fantasy. i think it’s cheap and stupid for very little reward.

it undermines his character trait of recklessness from lack of self preservation + arrogance. the way he dies is ironic and fun already it didn’t need this.

also im sorryyy the thing about his brother is just stupid.

it was so clearly written without anyone on board having read the book. Tarkin was not an evil calculating teenager until Later. his childhood was intensely miserable. he was aggressive and reckless on account of All The Trauma.

ALSO it’s significant that in the book he’s an only child! this raises questions about if his parents were comfortable with the possibility of sending (and possibly losing) a child to the Carrion

(or even if there was some perceived 'deformity' in Tarkin that made his strictly eugenicist family concerned.)

the only nice thing i have to say is that the artist knew how to draw Peter Cushing which is a feat that hasn’t been accomplished in many comics

^yeah! especially wrt him just explaining why he’d kill everyone again

it's such a gross mischaracterization. and the way it refuses to engage with the fundamentals of his purpose as a character ends up with the writer slipping and showing how little they understand fascism. which can I say? in the current climate is not fun. 😒 lends a reactionary air to the thing.

Tarkin doesn’t commit atrocities because he’s a big meanie obsessed with climbing the imperial ladder or a twisted cycle path, he does it because he genuinely believes that this is how you create a secure society. that kind of person isn’t going to cower and cry in fear when faced with the dead from their atrocities. they’re going to be like 'look at my accomplishments, I’ve paved the way for a better future'

there’s a kind of melancholy that I like seeing in 0 BBY Tarkin portrayals, where he sees himself as a necessary evil. as the product of the carrion rite while pointedly eschewing it's practice as he takes in Zahra. it’s just a really interesting way to write a gay coded fascist.

side thing but the way Krennic is framed is so weird? like it’s just odd to me, framing the Death Star exploding as his vengeance and placing him among the many innocents Tarkin killed does not work. weird and off putting all around!

It’s hard to connect the Grand Moff Tarkin who splurged millions of credits on Death Star carpet to the Admiral Tarkin who owned a cheapie R5 droid Z9, but then I realized that the sullen demeanor and sharp attitude resulting from deficiencies in R5’s personality matrix, which made it so undesirable to the average customers, was probably a huge plus for Tarkin 🤣🤣🤣
