thinking about doing a really overelaborate baba yaga house foundation paper piecing pattern. i was going to ask if people thought the mixing metals was tacky but i already decided i love it

In my wildest dreams this would be the back of a quilt coat but I started said quilt coat in 2023 so... probably not anytime soon!
I got the coolest antique ring with my name engraved on it (!!) and I love it so much. I’ve been learning more about antique jewelry and it’s so cool!
The stamps/marks inside are very interesting:
Lion is a “lion passant” meaning it’s high purity silver assessed by an assay office
Anchor is the mark of Birmingham assay office
The letter is a lowercase gothic “b” or “h”, can’t quite tell, but this letter corresponds with a specific year that you can look up. Every year since 1773-now gets its own letter in a different font. The “b” or “h” in this font means either 1876 or 1882, respectively.

When you buy rare or antique silver pieces, it is important to know that the hallmarks are designed to ensure the age and provenance of each
also re that last post, i keep searching for stuff and finding things that are literally like "baby ring for babies!" and i am 36 years old and trying to get married, i'm not a babyyyy
(left ring finger size is 3.5, for the record, if anyone has a tiny and low-profile art deco ring lying around lol)
-- Ted Chiang, from "Why A.I. Isn't Going to Make Art"
I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:
Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium.
this is the most first-world problem but
N and I are gonna get married and we're searching for rings, and apparently I have exceptionally narrow fingers?? which like, I knew, but I didn't realize it was to such an extent that it's actually hard to find anything vintage that's small enough to be resizable to my size. I shall search onwards!!
(I want/ed vintage because I like history and I wear a ring every day that's a family ring from somewhere around 1910-1915. This existing ring isn't particularly fancy or valuable, just sentimental and I really like how it looks. So I wanted it to coordinate with that.)
I know that I'll certainly never be someone they'd build a memorial for, but if I could get one, I'd like to get one of those park bench statues that are sitting on the bench. Specifically of me sitting casually looking towards the other seat at an angle, looking intrigued with a "surprised but not disappointed" kind of a look on my face. Kind of a "huh, won't you look at that."
I want that specifically so people can make it a meme to post pictures of themselves showing me stuff. Like memes off their phone.
Or maybe things that they are proud of but don't have anyone else to show them to. Like your school graduation papers, this cool knitting project you finally finished, your baby who's never going to see their grandparents.
And I also want a clause that they will absolutely fucking never put those anti-homeless things of any kind on my damn bench. So if there's ever someone who's got nobody else to keep them company, they can at least spend the night with me.
American Eel baby!!!
This was a super fun project despite the tricky material! It's a satin-y gold and not very forgiving.
Another fish jacket?! Another fish jacket <3
This time I tried flat felled seams for the sleeves which was fun and it totally didn't almost kill my sewing machine.

Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.
